Hello there!

I am currently playing as Duke Henry I of Aquitaine, I began playing one year before he is due to become King of England, I am aware of course that the current King Stephen I may live for many more years due to statistics. However, in history Henry bullied Stephen into naming him his heir, in place of his son. How on earth am I meant to, as the English cultured dei facto King of France meant to take the English throne? Must I now systematically invade England and take land like a common invader? I have no claim to the throne as my line traces to the Norman-English crusade of Jerusalem.

Any help, or perhaps strategies to take my crown without the need for total invasion would be most welcome!

I'm not entirely sure what relationship Henry and Stephen have... would killing his son (and everyone else in between you and the throne) be an option? It is a bit bloody, but it would be a bit smoother than actually invading the country. Alternatively, you could marry one of your sons to Stephen's daughters (if any) and then ensure that that daughter manages to inherit the throne, instead. Or, you could marry your son to a daughter close enough in the line of succession that your son's heir would inherit a claim to the throne.

The game is not that great at modeling the many diverse ways people managed to seize thrones in medieval times. Even William of Normandy's "invasion" of England should really be more of a claim war, right? But in a claim war, you don't get any of the king's land besides the main title, so that would hardly suffice.

I'm fairly certain the fact that it's an Invasion war is to simulate William's claiming of all English lands under allodial rights and then redistributing them.

Henry II (Duke Henry I before he became king) should ave a claim through his mother. Is Mathilda still alive?

That will be it, unless she died after Simmy started playing. It is annoying that you have to wait for your mother to die before you get a claim on her fathers throne.

I don't think there are any historical ways to take the throne, IE by bullying Stephen into naming you his heir. It would be nice if Paradox eventually did a DLC for this sort of thing.

Sadly, that DLC is hardly possible. What would you expect from a DLC of that kind? A decision that you can launch to bully someone? There'd have to be hundreds for all the different ways you could go about doing things.

But then, what we all really want is a medieval real life simulator, isn't it? :) Maybe one day...

Thank you for all the help, I was preparing myself to invade my liege's domain as I had seen no claim through my mother as of then when King Stephen -somehow- won a war for france. All of it. So quite content to plot to take France in its entirety it seems i'll change history instead of following it! What I find odd is that in setting up Henry II as the first 'English' King, if he -doesn't- become King he's an English Duke of France with an occitan mother and a frankish father! (or some such mix!)

There's nothing worse than playing as William the Conqueror in 1066 and winning the invasion of England only to see Robert as heir to England and William Rufus as heir to Normandy!
It was the other way around in reality and the game doesn't simulate that!
