It is saved in rtf fromat:

to compare with the original text.csv:

I'm not a native English speaker, but I know both English and German (well, it's rusty but it'll do as long as I don't have to write in German), and I've worked as a copywriter translating English into Norwegian and vice versa.

So, my question is how fast you need the whole translation done?

:)

Norgesvenn, that would be great if u can do it. the "only" thing is to search for german words and bring them in context with the rest of the eenglish text. and all the "EVENTHISTXXXX" must be all moved to the left

try as fast as you can. the faster you make the earlier all people can play it in english :)

Help with English editing

Hello. I'm a newcomer here, but just read about the UFI project. I love the idea and would like to help if I can. I have no German, but considerable experience in editing English texts (as well as translation French to English).

I looked briefly at your machine-translated text and I think I'm fairly clear on the meaning about 80% of the time.

So, here's my idea if it's of any assistance to you:

I understand Norgesvenn knows German but is perhaps concerned about not being a native English speaker. Possibly we could collaborate on each doing different sections and check each other's texts; in particular Norgesvenn could check my parts for correct meaning against the German, and I could proofread and edit Norgesvenn's for English if you think that's necessary.

I expect to have some free time tomorrow and next week to work on this. Beyond that I don't know, but it could give you a hand for now, anyway.

So, let me know if this is useful, and if so, Norgesvenn, what section of the text would you like me to start on?

Cheers.

Er. Not the german versian of the IFU text.csv; I already have that from the download. What I was asking for was the german text.csv from a pristine 1.05 installation, so I can find out exactly which strings are changed for the IFU.

Excellent, thank you.

I'll get to work isolating the differences, and translating the non-event ones, including first approximations of the country and culture names (which I'd already done).

tjank you but can u order it in that way too? There musnt be any breaks in the text and all the "EVENTHISTXXXXX" must stay on the left. See that one:

The biggest problem with running the text through a translation engine is that it does in no way fix the structure of the sentence.

Gramatically, English and German are oceans apart when it comes to the sentence order. The biggest challenge in proof-reading the English event text is knowing how a German sentence construction differs from an English one. Thankfully, I know this. :)

I'll post some words I find "untranslatable", and the final outline of course needs proof reading by a native English speaker.
That said, I tend to write British English, not American English (yeah, I'm a bloody Eurocentric :D )

I've finished a draft of a conversion of most everything that changed between the German 1.05 and IFU text.csvs other than the event texts, some of the country/culture names, and the description for Bavaria (I just ran out of steam :)). Before I provide a download link, however, I'd like to doublecheck a couple inconsistencies I've found and check the meaning of several words that neither the translation engine I used nor the online dictionaries I found could handle.

IVORDESC: Schleckerei?
HUN_DESC: stämmige?
HUN_DESC: What's vmtl. short for? Vermutlich? It fits the context, anyway.
EE_FLAG_5: Hisst?
DAN_DESC: Wikingerzügen?
BUDDHIST: asisch?
BRA_DESC: christianisierten?

MLO_DESC: How should "Unter Papst Gregor I. setzte 590 der Kampf des Katholizismus gegen die arianischen Langobarden ein und 603 traten die Langobarden unter ihrem König Agilulf zum Katholizismus über." be translated? Babelfish' output was even more incomprehensible than usual, to the point where I don't even want to guess at what it really means.

MLO_DESC also probably doesn't display completely in the German version, since it contains a ; in the text. You should be able to fix this by enclosing the entry in quotes (like in SER_DESC).

The confirmation text for promoting a bailiff to a tax collector, a legal counsel to a chief judge, and a mayor to a governor are changed to be governor to count, count to prince, and prince to duke respectively; however, the other references to legal counsels, chief judges, and the like are unchanged. Furthermore, promoting a mayor doesn't require that you already have a chief judge - you could promote your prince to a duke, and afterwards promote the governor to a count and then to a prince! Also, I don't know how it sounds in the original German, but most native English speakers would consider a prince to outrank a duke.

AREA_IVORY represents an area name, not a trading commodity; thus it should remain Elfenbein and not change to Früchte. (Not that anyone will get to the place...)

And as I mentioned in the stickied tags thread, the slowakisch and magyarisch cultures are duplicated; in both cases the incorrect entry should be changed to something that doesn't appear identically in-game.

In 590 A.D. , under the reign of Pope Gregor I. the fight of catholicism against the arianic Langobards set in, and in 603 A.D. the Langobards under their King Agilulf, converted to catholicism.

Just a suggestion....

OK, Norgesvenn, then when you get to the point of final tidying up I'll happily volunteer to proofread, make editorial suggestions for clarity if you'd like that as well, and so on and so forth. Just give a holler whenever you're ready. If you want to send stuff in sections as you go that might speed things up (feel free to use my mailbox).

Looks like a fair amount of work to be done here. Having looked at 5-6 pages, I 'd say about 50% is fairly clear (sometimes only if you think about it real hard), about 30% is mostly understandable but has ambiguities that only knowledge of German could clear up, and about 20% is complete garble. Not once did I see a single well-formed or error-free English sentence. Machine translation still has a long, long way to go . . .

By the way, like most Canadians I use British spelling as well. Guess our Yank friends will just have to grin and bear it. :D

Korath makes a good point that this could be confusing to English-speakers. Maybe this should be explained somewhere in the scenario for their benefit.

As I understand it, it's the British system of nobility that is actually a bit unusual in that it is the only one (I think) in which the title of "prince" is given only to the actual children of reigning monarchs, and the title of "prince" alone never conferred lands or power (except for the one title "Prince of Wales", of course, reserved for the heir-apparent).

On the continent, and especially Central and Eastern Europe, as I understand it, the title of "prince" does not imply immediate descent from royalty; it can be inherited through generations, or again just granted to someone not descended from royalty at all, and the title may or may not have lands or power attached to it. A Dukedom would normally be associated with considerable land and power.
