I'm playing my first game (GC, normal/normal, England):

I'm right about at the time to see the English Civil War, if it will happen. But I'm consistently at +3 stability, still showing 0 revolt risk in every province, and rich as Croesus (monopolies in every biggie trade center on the planet). What types of things happen that do/might bring on the war?

Going at war with 5 countries and getting high war exhaustion might help. Also try suppressing your country's state religion and/or the religion that is most common. Or both. Put all sliders back and raise the sliders for Moslem & Orthodox e.g.

Why provoke civil disorder?

Unless you want to only "see" the English Civil War break out that is one thing but otherwise why would you want it if you are doing so well? Besides the real fun in the game is to alter events in History hopefully for the better and in your favor. If you are THAT successful right now playing as England you have changed History and thus rendering a civil war unecessary at this point. And is stress POINT because your stability can decrease rapidly through the course of radical events at any time in the game. So relax, have fun, keep doing well and allow nature to take its own course. One of the biggest disappointments I see from players in the game is that want historical events to all take to place. If that was indeed the case the game I believe anyway would not be as exciting since there would be no true "what ifs" and instead would be too diluted with definite expectations.

Doing "a whole lot worse" than history can also be fun....

I once played a WW2 grand strategy game where I was Nazi Germany. I purposely played badly, so I could see how amusing it was for the pathetic Polish army to invade and occupy the Third Reich.

It was fun. Ridiculous, but fun. :)

Once an English Civil War broke out in my game (Maybe not THE English Civil War, but AN English Civil War) and I was too broke to fight it cuz Im at war with everyone, then the rebels take control of a few provinces in south england plus Anglia. Then guess what? My reformed england switched to catholic, scotland gained freedom (minus the highlands) as did the Incas (I killed the early on). So the rebels won the civil war! Cool huh? Well, the next month the rebels decided they were wrong and reformed again, but funny nonetheless. Anyways, reformed England is the hardest major power you can play, at least the way I play. Incan and Aztec gold skyrocket inflation to at least 50%, and then my income is cut in half from reformed religion, add the BB wars and its a great challenge!

In case your wondering whats happening in that game right now (still playing it) I resubjicated Incas and Scotland, but I had to cede Kent to Franceto make peace, if I hadent I couldnt have saved Ireland from French domination. Ive made peace with the major powers now and am allied with the Dutch, trying to conquer India and N/S America now. S Africa is mine, but the rest I'll leave to those flammable French tradeposts :).

There have been at least four Civil Wars in English history, btw :D It's just that only the most recent one gets the name, for some reason. I guess Cromwell thought his achievements were that much more important than anything anyone else ever did.

That's pretty poor timing by whoever coded them. The Civil War was pretty much over by 1645 - it just took four years to work up the guts to execute a King.

Yes. He set himself up in Cambridge, chopped the head off the Catholic King, and banned all booze in England.

The English sobered up just enough to realize this was a bad idea and Cromwell lost his head.

Only after he had already died, though. Once the Royal family was reinstated, Cromwell was exhumed from his grave and his corpse was beheaded :D

Highly civilized, the English...

Less highly after the head is removed, though :D

True.., but a great way to suck up to the new regime. Look what the US press did to Clinton when he left office. There is truely nothing new under the sun.

After he left office? Perhaps you missed what our lovely press did to him while he was in office. Most would prefer the high society of a beheading, even a post humous beheading...
