Hi, i'm playing on Stellaris on Xbox One and i'm french.
I was surprised that i can't use 'tard' in the description of my Meowpirium, it means later by the way.
It's very frustrating when censorship of another country don't let you use some word of yours.

Ps : The line is 'Plus tard, ils decouvrirent qu'il y eu des survivants.'

Monstrous!!!

It's worth bearing in mind how many forms of genocide are possible in this game..

It's not Paradox that are enforcing any kind of censorship in your descriptions. It must be part of the terms with Microsoft and Sony.

I completely understand your frustration though, as that sounds like the most ridiculous pain in the arse.

Why are you thinking this? It's also suitable if you're talking about crashlanding.
My point was that they don't really do censorship. There are absolutely zero restrictions on what you can type in names or descriptions anywhere in the pc version.

So when such a restriction magically appears only in the console version... Well, if it's not the consoles pushing that, then it was introduced by Tantalus while porting it. That seems unlikely though.

For those of you who don't know to 're-t-ard' means to delay in French that is why they're on about it. I find it very ironic that people are very upset about the word because it was used as a more politically correct word for the terms moron and idiot. Idiot and Moron meaning those people who have an IQ of 0-25 and 50 - 75. Which were pretty scandalous things to say, because not only were you saying that someone had a low IQ but also there was an association then of that having a connection to being unacceptable to have children.

The problem with censoring in words in such way is that people with ill intent will find away around things and people without ill intent will be punished. Something used in a lot of songs by the rap community is okay, but not okay for some other people so they through a B in front of it. If it is at another person Xbox has tools report people. However, I feel really worried that all it does is increase sensitivity. Which isn't good, because if you believe someone is making an attack against you instead of just bine an idiot which is perfectly fine to say now. Then people will feel free to physically attack these people, which won't make them right, it just makes the whole world worse.

Censorship isn't the answer. No people shouldn't be horrible, but nor should they drink to excess and get into fights every weekend, and I know that their are whole professions one I was a part of that form around that. We should be kinder to each other, but denying one freedom for comfort isn't be kind, it is tyranny by another name.

Look at the extreme levels of censorship on the forums, you can hardly argue a point against the state of the game let alone someone else's genuinely stupid opinion without it being considered "toxic" or "trolling"

No surprise that Tantaulus brought the same levels of censorship to the console port. This entire community is a socialist paradise, and it's connotations are sickening. Sheltering people, making them more sensitive, and censoring anything that negatively criticizes the game. It's China level censorship, and it allows them to cover up every ridiculously broken aspect of this game. That's why 90% of the people active on these forums are paradox yes men that accept a broken game as "complete" and anyone else that disagrees is silenced, my self included multiple times.

Should be no reason why in a mostly single player game you can't use whatever words you want. But that just goes to show that personal liberties are dying and we are entering a world of Orwellian proportions both on the games we play, and the lives we live outside the games we play.

But that's what happens in socialist societies when all industries are controlled by the state. Said industries are bound to the laws the state dictates and this is what you get.

With ease sir. Your comparisons are too verbose to affect change. Not the careful tone I try to use, in my post previous I take care to make note of why such things will always go wrong. However, you come down with the sledgehammer-like approach of comparing to China. I can say Taemin Square without being censored here. I bring up historical instances which had a varied levels of awfulness from rape of Nanking to the Holocaust. These events are filled with tragedy and pain yet I am allowed to speak about them, all be it in context.

The problem that this company as many companies have is the all-seeing eye of the media looking upon people and organisations alike. Tell me you haven't seen someone/organisation be destroyed by being on the wrong side of Orthodoxy.

Do I think they should censor, not without a doubt they should not.

However, this is the first 4x game on console, it has slavery, genocide, and more. Put yourself in their position would you risk your company or would you make sure that everything is as clean as possible?

Do I think they should censor these words no.

However, to compare them to regimes where people can speak out of fears of the deaths of not only them but the deaths of their families, well lets just say the comparison is not only abhorrent, but absurd.

Do I want them to stop censoring words, yes.
I want them to stop censoring sensitive words because there will always be a new insult, it won't solve a problem. I want them to understand that, I don't want to compare them to a 1920's regime as I am sure you have been at some time on some corner of the internet. Did that help dissuade you from your position or cement it?

People think when they are able, and to attack them doesn't allow them to think, it has the brain think in such terms what is the quickest defence to such an attack. Which does not allow people to think in any sort of positive manner. If you want to people to come to your way of thinking try and help them understand their position and not attack them.

I agree 100%...look at what is going on around the world...you should be concerned/afraid of all these attacks on speech...im canadian and its considered a hate crime if you mispronounce someone perceived pronoun...my work around this is i just dont talk to people who think they something other then what they are...look at new zealand..another messed up case..Uk has the same problem...and if i have to talk to someone like that..i just let them know that i identify as a gold-plated lynx and only want to be refer to as Ned...if they get it wrong..hate crime coming their way...

I don't think the comparison to China is all that far fetched. Let me tell you a story...

I would make posts, in regards to some serious bugs, posts in regards to the developers constant neglect of the console forums, posts in regards to the command console, posts simply disputing people's wrongful claims. Left and right, debate after debate. All these people who are absolute yes men who will defend the game and the developers no matter how broken it is. They'll gang up, and being passively aggressive try and discredit everything I say dispite the fact that everything I've said I been able to back up. But do they get censored or repremended? Nope. Instead all my posts are deleted, to extents where I look like I'm wrong and being unreasonable, instead I'm the one considered "toxic" and given my final warning, so now if I'm not careful it's off to the metaphorical gulag. Mean while all the people who brown nose are free to post whatever they want, even if it's something the staff would normally consider toxic. it's to the point where I seen moderators get rid of posts simply because there was swearing.

If that isn't China level Orwellian censorship, then idk what is. The only difference is they can't actually arrest me, they can't kill me for being a dissident. But I am sure if they can have people extradited and arrested for "toxic behavior" on their forums they would absolutely do it.

I don't understand, you would think they would want negative feedback, even if it's grossly negative because it's negative criticism that makes people improve. If they just keep censoring things so they see what they want to see then we're going to be stuck with a broken fucking game.

That's so sad, I am so sorry that you live in such a society. But that is exactly how it starts, soon paradox and it's associates will be able to press charges and potentially have people extradited for it. Keep going down this road of socialism, then "toxicity" eventually turns into hate speech, and that eventually becomes a hate crime. And so long as industries are controlled by their government like in socialist countries where paradox is based, then this becomes all the more of a real possibility. Don't think so? Say something against a Chinese business, that is something they normally censor, and best believe if they can get you extradited they fucking will, and that is what will eventually start happening here, mark my words.

a couple of things on that. how old are those games, times are changing and people are offended by everything today.

and second, this game has an age rating of 7 (european) and 10 (NA), meaning that children can buy this game without a parent. are the games you're comparing to rated for children?

this is not censorship or some nefarious attack on freedom of speech, nor patriarchal systemic racism against (insert anything here). it's simply that they wanted to market their game for everyone, including children.

so everyone just take off your tin foil hats, put down the kool-aid and come up with another way to say what you want and get on with enjoying the game o_O

Still, don't see how that means they should censor things not only in the game but through out the entire community too. Don't see how literally censoring negative criticism as "toxic" has anything to do with children, don't see how being censored for going against the company's status quo having anything to do with children, and I don't see how arguing a valid point against a bunch of blind brown nosing yes men and being censored for that too having anything to do with children lol

How much are they paying you? I'm beginning to think you are a straight up shill, because everything you said just poorly justifies their obsession with silencing anything that doesn't amount to "this game is great, take my money" or "your opinion is obviously wrong, but I'll agree with you because it makes the game and the dev's look good" lol

He isn't wearing a tin foil hat man. Read through the comments, I know I have seen you be rational in other places. Remember this isn't removing bad concepts within a game like genocide, slavery, or forced genetic modification. This is what the user puts in they aren't allowed to say bad words, this isn't content coming from the game it is from the user. That is censorship, not allowing people do something with something they own is censorship. Not only that his not EVEN trying to say anything bad his just French.

Dude, stop projecting. You are the only person to use the term toxic here. It is obvious that for some reason you think your behaviour is and with how you compared yourself to a Chinese internet slave. If you want to talk about "paid shills" you're looking more like one, because they make their opponents look bad, and that is how bad you look. You're on the right side of a good argument and you look so bad you're tainting the argument. Revaluate dude.

If you keep using the term toxic, you know why you're doing it and it isn't because what anyone is doing or saying here.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Okay since this is still going. I will try, try and be short.

There will always be a new blasphemy and if you don't like that description for people censoring words maybe reevaluate, because that is what it ultimately is. That is how people treat it. Words are words, in my day people would say sticks and stone can break your bones, but words will never hurt you. They are wrong in that will never hurt you, but what they are saying you must make it so words will never hurt you.

There will always words that will hurt and they don't need to be blasphemy of wrong think. Some examples from my life "I never loved you I just needed you, so I said I love you" "She has cancer in her tongue that's why it is hard for her to eat, you have to make a decision here" -a vet to me about my cat, we buried her a few days ago "We aren't going to prosecute its too hard."

Read any one of these statements and think of them in a context in your life and tell me you wouldn't want the situation that they came from to replaced with someone screaming a racial slur, a derogatory term, or other slight.

Yeah, its not nice to be called some of those things, but this the privacy of someones home. Let them blow off some steam by calling someone a bad name. Not being allowed to say it in a game isn't going to make them less likely to use the word its going to make them more likely because it is forbidden.

Let people have the badly named Empires and then let join multiplayer and then have someone say hey were not playing with you, because you named your empire X. That will teach the lesson far more than not letting them use it. Stop being censorious let the chips fall where they may and I think you will be pleased with the result.

Okay, are we done?
Or will something else come up where I look and shake my head again...

Projecting? No, I am basing everything off of every action a mod has taken against me for all the reasons I've explained in every post, how they take advantage of that new "anti-toxicity" policy, which they blatantly abuse to silence anything they deem "negative" even if that is negative criticism about either them or the game. I use the term because that is what they have defined my content, among others as. Like I said, I have seen posts removed, and threads closed just because they contained swearing, or because people were overly criticizing not only how broken the game is, but how little they seem to actually care, considering they promise to fix these things, and don't then continue to promise them and go on a crusade against anyone that has called them out on it.

There becomes a point where being nice about it shouldn't cut it because clearly they walk all over people who try and be passive about it, like yourself. It isn't far fetched to compare how they treat users like me to how the Chinese government treats it's people, the only difference is they can't arrest me, or kill me for saying these things. If anything you would be the shill too, trying to make it seem like I am blowing things out of proportion when I am merely an unsatisfied customer who is getting fed up with how this "professional business" treats the people that are making them millions of dollars, who expects us to just accept a broken game.

I am confident if they could, they would put us all under chemical bliss, and become our rogue servitors since we aren't allowed to have a mind of our own apparently. So no, I don't think I am toxic at all, it is them that think I am toxic and trolling when all I am trying to do is make a point, and defend it against a bunch of people who are obviously wrong about everything they are projecting, like twenty for example.

the tin foil hat comment wasnt directed at the OP, I apologize if they took it that way. it was directed towards the people talking about the company being communist and pressing charges for toxic behaviour etc, etc.

my point was that, sure it's unfortunate that the swedish company that released the game didn't take the time to go through every single language, every single word to make sue they weren't blocking something not harmful but they didnt do it to try and silence anyone. they did it to keep their pegi 7 rating and keep the game child friendly. I highly doubt these were their standards but the standards of whatever European body controls the ratings system. the simple proof of this is this forum right here, no problem using the word here, is there?

as for being able to do what you want with what you own, you better check the EULA or similar that comes with each game and have to agree to to play that game. you may find that simply because you bought something, doesnt actually give you ownership in the traditional sense. I'm not for censorship but understand trying to protect children from bad situations.

All in all..with all said...and in my opinion censorship sucks in whatever languange/religion/ethnicity/political idealogy or position or plethora of other places it rears its ugly head...everyone no matter what deserves to say what what they will when they will..within reason(dont be inciting violence or degrading to others)we are worrying about about words appearing in a game..a game apparently where children are making quite adult decisions regarding slavery, genocide, galactic dominance, im sure children can make the adult decision whether to regard or disregard offensive/derogatory words...
