With the breakup of france into smaller vassal states again (The swarm rises again!) the effect on england is massive.

Now, my situation might be just one case out of a bad day of EU4. I'll admit that might be the case.

I posit three points as to why England is in a bad position with the new french update, baring old issues.
1. Burgundy rivals you, in my case atleast , 100% of the time. This makes no sense as to why they do it, as burgundy fought , historically, with the english kings as they did not like the french trying to integrate burgundy over and over again. Infact, the french tried to insist on salic law around the eu4 time period and making all burgundian lands french property with the death of the duke of burgundy which drove them right into the arms of the HRE.

2. Henry, while not insane (but still incompetent) in his early life should not be a 0/0/0 ruler. The representation of his reign should be one of events, and possibly improve his stats if an ahistorical path is followed. (Victories in france, subjugation of scotland, ect) A 1/3/1 with the negative modifiers to diplomacy would make more sense. Also, infertile. I know this is supposed to lead to the war of the roses but he had a son in the period of eu4, and the war of the roses is what killed him. Having to game it to follow an ahistorical path should not be the player's only option. The fact that you instantly have a disaster you can game to your advantage isn't one of fun, it railroads the player into making the AI kill rebels to seige out your provinces.

3. The english ideas as england are better than the British ideas. (also, you don't get an empire rank unless you're at 1k dev. Great britian should get an empire rank to compensate for this when forming the nation , or atleast a discount on it) British ideas, while great at bringing money in and giving discipline and traditions to naval combat , while great, does not compare to the lategame english ideas.British ideas are simply worse than the english ideas going for an anglophile permanent kaiser run. The land fire damage is massive for late game, a dead soldier cannot be disciplined.

While the third point can be solved by just..not taking the new ideas, why should I have to ahistorically represent my nation of choice?

Ideally Plantagenet would be the heir at game start. An event could fire to replace him as heir with Henry’s natural son (this could be random or scripted for the actual timeline) or the heir position could be left open. If the heir position were left open and a natural heir produced then a similar event could occur giving the player a choice of keeping Plantagenet as heir or going with the son. This would then start the War of the Roses.

Yes! This as well. The current war of the roses does not sit right with me.

I'll agree that England's starting position on 1.30 is pretty bad. They might be a powerhouse later on but they have so many obstacles early on that one of two things will happen: either they weather the storm and survive or go broke before 1500 and never become a threat.

And Anglicism is still a bad thing for England as it makes it slightly harder for them to find allies, declare on other countries and gives them terrible bonuses.

Nothing stops you from not taking British Ideas when you form it, you can keep the English Ideas. As for the English or British ideas, I'll grab the British ones anyday of the week but eh, different philosophies I'll say.

State of Early game England is bad, yes. On the other hand they still are on the wealthiest trade node of the whole game, got the safest position, a mission tree allowing them to blob all around the world and Anglicanism, while not being great, will help you save the only limited ressource in the game, Monarch Points.

A lot of Major countries in the English neighbourhood are stuck with terrible rulers at the game start and either need events (Poland / Hungary) either need them to die off (Castille / Austria). Why would you be the only one to get such improvment makes no sense. If such a mecanic were to be added, it would have to be widespread.

1 is a common problem everywhere. It's because you are penalized for not setting rivals (for some reason).

No opinion on point 2.

If you seriously think 10% Land Fire damage is somehow superior to 5% discipline, then you do not understand combat modifiers. Fire damage affects one phase and only counts offensively. Discipline applies to BOTH phases and counts for BOTH offense and defense. This means that Discipline can be thought of as 4x better than Fire Damage, assuming you value fire and shock equally to prevent complex math & shifts in technology/pips.

I'm not asking for a buff. I'm asking for accurate historical representation. The man had a son during the period of the game. Not "no heir" with infertile as a start trait.
I'm playing an England Game atm. Burgundy didn't rival me and were massively helpful in winning the 100 years war. A few years later the Burgundian Inheritance happened and I got them for free too. I think Anglicanism should be somewhat changed (say, instead of Heretic Nation to others make them just full Heretic to catholic and Tolerated Heretic to Protestant/Reformed), but England itself can still do pretty well pretty easily.

Are you going for full anglophile run? I believe it's broken in the current patch with how reformation desire works. Getting into the HRE before the AI quite literally ignores provinces flipping in its own area of control isn't really fun for me right now.

You start by saying "With the breakup of france into smaller vassal states again (The swarm rises again!) the effect on england is massive. "

And then you list three points that have nothing to do with France at all. Oh and none of which were even affected by the Europe patch.

Yes, I should have started out with how france having vassals with different manpower pools affected england's current starting position.

Burgundy rivalling England is far from 100%, in my experience it is probably about 50%. It also isn’t necessarily without historical reason. England and Burgundy rivaling each other in 1444 following Burgundy abandoning England and aligning with France in 1435 doesn’t seem unreasonable. Not to mention the events around the siege of Orleans certainly didn’t help relations.

Winning the Hundred Years‘ War is quite a bit harder than it was, but it should be hard. By 1444 England was losing badly and well on its way to defeat on the continent. From a game perspective, it has such a huge reward at that stage of the game (and not dependent on crossing your fingers and hoping that it really should be quite hard.
