I have a suggestion for the engineer unit.
Engineers should raise the infrastructure of its occupied sector, or maybe the supply throutput?

Then one could organise engineers in a "supply train" in a occupied territory to get the supplies to the front.

A military engineer is primarily responsible for the design and construction of offensive, defensive, and logistical structures for warfare. -Wikipedia

- perhaps you should need a engineer brigade to speed up repairs
so the normal repair rate is very low and will only be good if those units are around. You could also split into combat and construction eng-brigades ( like Organisation Todt or the US Seabees)

HoI2 tried to simulate this by combining the engineer unlock/upgrade techs with the TC boosting techs, but with a logistics model in place this would be way more elegant

I totally agree, but how much should this bonus be? Engineers were also small units and one brigade should not be able to do wonders at least not to whole army group.

Somebody who has a better understanding of supply, needs to have a look at this.

hm, I think this is one uneccessary step towards micromanagement, we already have techs that improves logistic transfer/throughput which represents optimizing logistics.

However *if* this was an idea to implement I would suggest they had a non-linear bonus to the infrastructure, as in, the better infrastructure in the province the lower the bonus the engineer provides.

I think its a good Idea, engineers should increase the repairspeed of all buildings in their own (and perhaps also adjacent) provinces.

However *if* this was an idea to implement I would suggest they had a non-linear bonus to the infrastructure, as in, the better infrastructure in the province the lower the bonus the engineer provides.
Supply throughput already is non-linear. Thus a static bonus (say +20 throughput per brigade) would provide much less improvement to a infra 10 province then a infra 2 province.

I dunno if units can get provincial modifiers as bonus - but, what if ENG would get a supply tech that allows them to generate a minor amount of supplies?

I can imagine engineers improving supply throughput in swamps, mountains and at bad infra. Don't see them building extra highways though. I think the bonus should be mostly to low infra provinces

This was discussed heavily before HoI3 release and devs did not like it. I think at most was discussed speed + fort + and bridging + for eng.

Most of the eng brigades in game represent combat engineers which are a bit different than logistics engineers. They could do same jobs in a pinch but different equipment and emphasis in training.

What do the current engineers do exactly?

If it were to be implemented as suggested perhaps some kind of increasing bonus, 1 day = 1 extra infra, 2 days = 2 or something like that, then if all engineers are removed it starts to degrade over time perhaps??

The kind of engineers in the game really are not those kind of engineers that improved infrastructure, the game has basically represents combat engineers. Not really the kind that build roads, those are construction engineers.

So basically they are in the infrastructure building, I do think that they should have a way of building infrastructure faster with more effort put to it. A military unit that ate up supplies while boosting infrastructure build times, or airports, or sea ports.

Why not use the OP's Idea, only with Garrison units instead?

It would make them more attractive to build in rear areas again and their bonus would reflect their keeping roads, rail & communication in their zone clear & in good repair.
