I've always enjoyed stuff like upgrading ships in this way, glad they included it in the game - just hope there is a nice variety and range of options not just a few no-brainers. Looking good so far

Notice the "mechtech" rating and "medical" rating on the left. Those show up on many screens, but this is one of the places where you can actually impact it via building up the mech bays and med bays. They've also suggested that events can impact these ratings

It looks like "Arclight" is the protagonist (you). Either the default or just the one they chose on this playthrough. No salary, can't be dismissed, doesn't seem to count towards the available berths.

Shiny glass ball planets are the best kind of planet.

But sometimes ungrateful things dig down and hide inside the shiny glass ball planets to avoid your super fun happy-party-time greetings fireworks.

So then you've got to crack the shiny ball planets open so they can marvel at your absolute friendship laser light show.

After that it's best just to play the 'throw the planetary fragments into the sun' game, just to be sure.

It's like a cloud - we can look at it and see all sorts of wonderful creations.
