There's a lot of debate about using Large Lasers and PPC's (more so LL's and second to PPC's).

The simplest way I think is to introduce a -heat perk for energy weapons.

Example:

Large Laser+ (-3 Heat)
Large Laser++ (-6 Heat)
Large Laser+++ (-9 Heat)

This could also apply to SL, ML, PPC and their ER and energy brethren. If I get a Large Laser +++ that gives -3 heat and +10 damage, I would definitely consider using it. Each + would be approximately 8% less heat (up to a max of 24% if you find a +++ weapon with it)

Alternate "Weapon Plus" Ideas:

Giving some of the weapons +damage is probably making them excessive (see, a +++ damage AC20 delimbing heavy mechs in a single shot). And there are other items which don't currently get any of these sorts of bonuses.

Energy Weapons -- heat reduction (less heat generated), as you note.

Autocannons -- recoil reduction

PPCs and LRMs -- minimum range improvement

Ammo "Bins" -- higher capacity, increased critical resistance

Support Weapons -- minor range increase

Heat Sinks -- better heat dissipation

AC/20 with damage boosts is obscene... as in you are literally hurling obscenities out of your targets mouth. Such a weapon needs no damage boost.

Yeap -- which is why I think there need to be different perks besides "+damage" for those limb-cutting massive weapons.

(Will become even more ridiculous as more tech is added to the game.)

Let PPC add flamer (heat up) perk
In mechwarrior3 - a patch gave PPC ability to heat up the target aka flamer like in addition to damage and it makes sense.

Consider the definition of PPC
Causes damage through combination of kinetic and thermal energy.

At least in this game, they appear to have replaced that with the stability damage that PPCs do.

Not sure I want more weapons adding heat to targets given how hot things run in this game, but maybe that's just me.

(Also, technically, lasers do all their damage through thermal effects...)
