350 damage over 3 rounds is 'bad' due to 'basic math' (pinpoint 350 damage, BTW, shot from well beyond visual range.

But 400 damage over the same 3 rounds is legit.

The top value, BTW, is the same as unloading an AC/20 over those same 3 rounds.

50 points of damage is significant.

Currently I believe there are medium mechs that can out damage the Awesome at range using either 3 AC/5s or 2 AC/5s and a LL/PPC as they can fire continuously.

In any case as much as I'm irritated with the current Large Laser and PPC (I mean they are obviously well off, it's pretty surprising they haven't been adjusted yet)..... HBS has given me the tools to balance them properly (given that I only play single player for the most part)... .so I'll be happy.

If I was a MP person I'd be more annoyed

Ok, sooo, not only does the PPC deal more heat initially, then the Global heat mod kicks in and gives it even more heat.

In the end, whatever the global heat mod is for, it will result in the PPC giving you 67% more heat, so a PPC shot is 13.3 heat+67%, for a whoppin' 22.2 heat. Or in Battletech, 40 heat+67% for 66.8 heat. Pair it alongside any other weapons and its no wonder I could never fire the PPC more then 1 time every few turns and almost nevr with supporting weapons.

I even had it on mechs which I put a made up heat coolant device that gave me 10 SHS worth of coolant...

That's not how it works.

It didn't work that way in the beta (when the combined heat was 37 - to include both the individual weapon heat and the global modifier) and, as we've been informed, not how it works now, where there is no global heat modifier and the PPC is a flat 40h.

[Mod edit: Personal, not topical]

The global heat modifier no longer exists. It was in the beta for ease of testing, but was never intended to be used in the final game. The PPC is set at 40 heat, no additional modifier beyond that.

As a bit of perspective, the base overheating point is 50 (which can be increased with the Guts skill, max +30). An Awesome has 28 heat sinks and sinks 84 heat per turn.

With PPCs at 40 heat each, firing 3 generates 120 heat. The Awesome can fire 3-1-3-1 or 2-2-2 indefinitely.

With PPCs at 35 heat, firing 3 generates 105 heat. The Awesome can fire 3-3-2-3-2-2...

With PPCs at 30 heat, firing 3 generates 90 heat. The Awesome can fire 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-2...

TT heat would be too much of a buff for the PPC going by this. Though I have to say I am liking that 35 heat, biased a bit maybe. Still cannot keep up with 3 AC-5 doing 45 damage each, but I'm ok with it being close. Drop Stability damage down to 10 also, and I think it should be about perfect.

Dropping the PPC stability damage would be a significant nerf to it and not worth a heat decrease. Being able to knockdown mechs faster is a significant strength. It does seem like killing pilots instead of mechs will be a common enough tactic in this game. Theres more to this game then just maximizing DPS.

Also have to realize, as far as I know, each mech without extra heat sinks will only dissipate 30 heat a turn. You only need extra heat sinks when adding a 4th AC-5. The PPC already comes exceeding this just walking, and needs 2 extra heat sinks at 35 to stay heat neutral.

Not really, it is at current damage values a direct competitor to the AC-5. 5 more damage, 10 more stability, same minimum and maximum ranges, and unlimited ammo.

Edit: I guess maybe you could keep the stability at 20 with it still being so hot.

Yeeeaaahhh, except the AC10 is the PPCs competitor. The AC5 was just massively buffed. That you would think the AC5 is the PPCs competitor kinda shows how over buffed the AC5 is. I wont disagree that the 2 and 5 needed a little something to make them worth the weight and space, but making it basically a PPC.....lil bit far.

I think putting the AC2 on par, or 5 dmg more then a ML would be fine, as well as putting the AC5 on par with a LL. So, something like 30 dmg for the 2 and 45 for the 5. PPC is the top of the food chain for energy weapons, their big dog, and to put it on par with a small fry autocannon I cant agree with there.

It used to be a competitor to the AC-10 until HBS buffed the ACs. Even dialing back the AC-5 damage to 40 they are still competitors due to range. In that case though I would be okay with the 20 stability damage on the PPC. Still 35 heat though.

Friggin PPCs are 40 heat if that stream video I saw is correct....

PPCs should impart some stability damage.

Look at Jade_Rooks post I quoted. PPCs would behave just like their TT counterparts at 35 heat. You have to realize there is no longer heat built up from moving as far as I am aware. Unless you Jump.

Walking no longer generates heat. I believe Sprinting still generates a little heat (it was about 7 in the beta, but could have changed), however the mech can't fire when it Sprints so it will still cool significantly by Sprinting. Jumping generates substantial heat, but has substantial benefits.

They do impart stab damage, equal to that of an AC10 - 20pts, I believe?

He was debating me, and against dropping them to 10 points to be more inline with the AC-5.

Even if PPC go down to 35 heat, if they did the same stability damage as AC-5, AC-5 would still be the superior weapon. PPC need to be buff. Maybe 5 points more damage and same stability damage (20) so they are closer to the AC-10.

Personally, I want the Thug to be in the game. An 80 ton assault mech with 2 PPC and 2 SRM 6. The PPC punch holes in armor and the SRM crit seek. Now thats a great assault mech, I prefer it over the awesome. Though I believe the AWS-8T can be built like a Thug, if so then it will be my preferred assault mech.

I'm likely going to be changing it to 35 at least

For me personally theres no point in changing it if it will only effect the single player. From what I've seen, the weapons good enough as is to get through the compaign using whatever you like.

Its the multiplayer I'm worried about. Are people going to use PPCs and large lasers or will multiplayer be dominated autocannons and LRMs. TIme will tell.

One Note: This kind of discussion will never be resolved. The community has been arguing it in various forms for 30 years.
Very true, the debate about PPC vs Autocannons has always been in battletech. Its just that for the first time its skewed in the Autocannons favor.
