Quick question - how is it possible that a duke with 4 holdings in his demesne can raise ~10k in troops in a matter of years without spending money? Currently I am king of Ireland trying to quell my rebellious Duke of Leinster. It is not really a threat but I am confused on how he is raising armies of 2k and 3k with regularity but his wealth is not dropping.

If it is a faction war they spawn troops that they don't need to pay for and that don't suffer attrition.

What is a "faction" war?

Also, it is happening again. My relative, the Duke of Ulster has revolted and somehow is is raising ~2k troops a year from his holdings. Granted that branch of the family has managed to gain the Duchies of Meath and Leinster, but it seems improbable that he can raise troops that fast. The whack-a-mole strategy I've had to take is reminiscent of rebels in EUIII before I figured out how to not suck.

Your playing with 1.07b? Factions were added in 1.07 under the intrigue tab and then factions. That is how is vassals fight for independence.

It looks like you are starting in Ireland. Ireland is only 13 counties you should be able to get your demesne limit to that using gavelkind and having a midas touched bride. Then train your offspring to be midas touched as well. Later switch to grey eminence training once your realm is larger.

Just revoke everyone's title in Ireland and hold all of the counties yourself. Destroy extra duke titles once you for the kingdom of Ireland. Never give titles especially duke/king titles to dynasty members it will just cause you problems until you played many games of CK2.

Well in my faction induced civil wars later in game I saw those "bands of opportunists" gather up to 100k men on the side of my opponents (of course I could crash them). Man, that was a significant fraction of the European population of the time! Not even many modern armies count that many men.

Yeah it is based upon your realm size and manpower. I forget the exact numbers but it is posted somewhere around here.

Under Gavelkind don't all your heirs take your land when you die? Breaking apart the Country?
