I can't say this for sure, but in my experience, if the other of dividers, Spain or Portugal, does not exist, then the treaty is void.

At least I had this situation in one of my games, and Spain had no interest of capturing any TOT provinces from other catholics.

But it might also have been a sleeping AI.

If for example Portugal disappears while the ToT is in effect, their ToT-shields are removed, but Spains' remain until the end of the ToT. At least that's my experience...

Well, in my current GC Castille decided to keep the name, TOT triggered, but no TOT shields appeared :D

That is working as designed, since no Spain!

Hooray! ToT strangled before birth! :D

Coming back to the original post, there seems to be nothing you can do to undo the T of T once it has activated, unless you:
(1) use a cheat code and bring in the Edict Of Tolerance
(2) get excommunicated ( ;) ) i.e. go Protestant - but then it still affects the remaining Catholic nations ... or
(3) sack Rome, get 100% war score and demand that the Pope revoke the Treaty .... in your dreams .... :(

Well, there's an easier way out.
Go for the Cape Verde islands, San Fernando, St Helena, or the Canadian provinces. Those that have no ToT CB shields on them.
And since they're islands.. easier to colonise, and no negative growth factor.
I just kinda prefer to colonise islands over weird rectangles of land on a continent... :D

I like the islands too. But most of them are of low to medium value (at least if you're trying to avoid the sugar and spice islands for the duration of the ToT).
There are some great non-island, non-ToT provinces like Roanoke and Stadacone of course. And the Australian provinces, which Portugal has a shield on but never seems to find.
