Valencia
Spains third largest city fell to V Crops, the 7th - 9th Marine Divisions under LTG Hart. It was a large if somewhat unprepaired city. Franco never thought the allies had the industrial strength to pull this off with another amphibious group in the the Pacific. He was wrong, very wrong. There were no costal guns, no fighting positions in the city and it's Garrison only recently upgraded.
This war had been in effect since December 7th 1941 and in that time the America Arsenal had only awoken in the last year or so to it's peak. Two hours before dawn hundreds of medium ranger bombers and fighters took to the skies and made there presence felt all over southern Spain. Major road and rail junctions as well as military areas were struck several times in waves.
The the Aircraft based from thirteen Carriers struck there respective cities and targets within. Valencia's harbor and shipyard were considered extremely important and given priority by the Marines for capture and security operations. The Airfields would have to see some rapair after the allied strikes.
In the year since the invasion of Japan the Corps had been given an infusion of heavy, mechanized and motorized equipment from Army stockpiles and a larger slice of the Navy budget. It had gone from six to twelve divisions, with more of it's own Armor and Avation support. Some regiments remained light, while others were ment to have more of a mobile, mechanized fist to penetrate deep into objectives.
The Navy for it's part had become second to none in putting Marines ashore. With thirteen division sized landings and six Corps sized landings on it's record this would still be one of the largest and most darring. The thrust into Valencia was right into an urban area, it's goals of just running over the Spanish garrison and moving inland while larger Army formations were unloaded would take many weeks of planning in Algiers.
The Spanish forces for there part and throughout the Iberian Campaign were of good stock. Well trained and given modern equipment as well as German advisors they put up downright dogged resistance at several points. There Mountian troops in particular were thought well of, good Soldiers who fought hard.
