I'm planning my next game, but before I get disappointed: is it possible to end the great schism with a catholic Byzantine Emperor? Or as Emperor of the HRE for that matter? Also: can the HREmperor restore the Roman Empire?
Only Ortodox Byzantinum can end the Great Schism AFAIK.
HRE can neither end the Great Schism nor reform the Roman Empire.
You're right, but IMHO ''completing'' the 'end the Great Schism' decision with its Catholic counterpart would be great.
It wouldn`t be as epic. The only powerful Orthodox country is the Byzantine Empire, thus the most reasonable target is Constantinople, so the conversion event would only hit the remmants of the empire you destroyed (Russia will be Mongol by this time). And you already get the Latin Empire for ending the Byzantines.
Another crazy idea that just came to me: what if you could vassalize the Catholic Pope as bishop of Rome, the Ecumenical Patriarch as bishop of Constantinople, the Coptic Pope as bishop of Alexandria, the Monothelite patriarch as bishop of Antioch and the Nestorian patriarch as bishop of Jerusalem? Maybe it would’ve been impossible, but that would pretty clearly be a situation in which all of Christianity is back in communion, and each sect is officially tolerated, but subordinate to the secular authority.
So free investiture without annoying Pope to change it... nicely!
