I'm playing as the holy roman emperor and My realm is the only catholic realm left. The pope is also my vassal. What happens if I convert to a heresy, or another religion? Can I demand that everyone converts (even the pope?) and end catholocism?

It's very hard for a religion to be wiped out, I believe that there will always be a Pope, landed or not, and that means there will always be Catholics.

If you, and your vassals, all convert to a heresy or different religion, most of the courtiers in your realm will as well. But there will always be like, a dozen Catholics in the world.

Catholicism would still exist outside your realm.

Even if I did believe you could demand the Pope's conversion, which you can't, it wouldn't effect his follower's faith.

The only real advantage to such an odd situation is you essentially become crusade proof. As he cannot call a crusade against his liege.

If you want to replace Catholicism consider the pagan route, specifically Halfdan in Jorvik 867.

Edit: That was pre-Conclave though. Good luck with such a blob these days.

Even if every ruler, every county and every courtier renounced Catholicism the Pope would be still exist (and probably skulk around somewhere in Rome). I like to imagine that situation as Sith rule of two kind of thing; always two there are, the Pope and the Cardinal.

But cardinals would have to keep getting appointed, and the pope replaced on death.
If you converted, and forced conversions throughout your realm, then just kept trying to kill off the pope (probably gaining all sorts of plot power through false religion opinion modifiers?) then where do all the cardinals come from? Don't they need to have a bishopric somewhere to qualify? Or does that only contribute to cardinal appointment score, and so eventually any lowborn with 3 learning will be in the running?

Yeah, I'd think that if you managed to take every Catholic bishopric and replace them with non-Catholics, you'd end up with no cardinals, ergo no pope.

I would bet that in such a situation it would devolve to either Open Elective (and so generate a courtier as needed) or some sort of weird blood inheritance (maybe via cousins), since papal bastards can have a claim on the papacy.

There will always be a Pope. Not even the Gates of Hell can prevail against Petrus' successors.

Even then the Pope would get a successor from somewhere. Which is good since if the Papacy vanished entirely the game would probably break since a lot of events use it as focal point.

I wonder if I could get a non catholic pope by converting and then sending my court chaplain to the province where the pope lives?

I think the pope is immune to being converted, or at the least automatically converts back.

PS I don't think there are any cardinals as I don't have any DLC, I just have Charlamagne, the old gods, legacy of rome and the republic, and I've rolled back to before the conclave patch.

Charlemagne, old gods, legacy of rome, and the republic **are** DLC.

All religious heads are incapable of converting. Play as the Caliph and try changing your religion via the console.
