Quick 2 questions. With my penchant for side mission spam and limited time to play I can't just buzz through the campaign to answer question 1.

1. When they turn you lose after the campaign, is travel still restricted to the 3-4 zones you campaign in? I would assume yes.

2. Is the difficulty skull rating set by campaign missions (I know it does seem to be gated), or by your merc rating? If rating can bad faith withdrawls drop you back?

I have been finding the 2-3 skull rating to be the most enjoyable with mixed lances and am debating starting a new campaign to camp that difficulty level.

Thanks

After the last mission you can also travel to the other places like Federated Suns Worlds. So basically to all the systems on the map.
Some of those are diff 4-5 but there are also lower diff ones.

As for when the diff goes up to me it seems like there are multiples factors contributing to it but I honestly don't really know.

Well thats good! As long as there are places with lower options available I'll be pleased.

Still may start over and make some json changes (I like the 5 part salvage and losing cored mechs options quite a bit)

I`m trying to rush through this horrible story so I can just get into the main sandbox and be a proper Merc in control of my team.

Yeah, on my second runthrough I'll probably not upgrade the Argo so much either.

Shiny ship with a hold full of assaults and elite++ pilots doesn't fit my head cannon for my merc outfit.

The story missions affect the available mission difficulty, and I think they're intentionally designed to be harder to gate your progress.... if you can get through the story mission your lance should be able to handle most of the contracts that show up afterwards.

I'm on my second play through, and I just finished the second story mission, and one of the missions was a 4 skull mission, but I think that was because I got really really lucky and head shot a Jaggermech, and a Centurion, so my total mech tonnage equaled quite high for the timeline. I actually think the random missions are spawned based off of the total mech tonnage you have, because once I put the Jaggermech and extra Centurion back into storage, my random missions went back down to 1 skull and 1 1/2 skull missions.

The main story progress increments a global difficulty modifier.

This ranges between 1-10 (which corresponds to an appropriate half skull).

Systems have their own range modifiers to get to the average skull difficulty in the system. This can range from -4 (the starter systems) to +2 (one skull higher) that I've seen. As the skull meter caps at 5 skulls, I haven't tried whether a 5 skull mission over in Fed Sun territory (where you're expecting at least +2) is any different than the systems that have no modifiers. That is to say, whether difficulty 11+ is implemented, or everything basically caps at 5 skulls.

That's what I thought, not ideal but I'll just start a second campaign.

Thanks!
