I'm a large, aggressive theocratic empire that enslaves and genocides the planets I capture. People don't like me, obviously.
However, when the Prethoryn Scourge shows up, it'd be nice to see their opinions suddenly change to be based off of my military strength and be inundated with pleas to intervene for the sake of the galaxy. As it is, since the Scourge is on entirely the opposite side of the galaxy from me, I really have no motivation to care about fighting it other than the knowledge that by the time it reaches me it'll be unbeatable.
I think this sort of logic should apply to all end-game crises - if it's a huge threat and you have a huge military, everyone should suddenly be demanding that you help and celebrating if you decide to.
