1524

At the onset of 1524 and just when Gritti was tired of the growing problems against him in senate. A new scandal in senate broke out that involved senators bribing each other to vote against the Vienna Treaty. Now Andrea at first was worried about this scandal that it would somehow come back to him. Instead it was hurting members of the senate preferably those who opposed Gritti. So Andrea did nothing to stop the scandals hoping it would shake up the senate in his favor but his hopes didnt bear fruit because the great senator Meerschaum with his massive gold wealth worked feaverishly to squash the scandal and get things to normal.

In Rome a new Pope was crowned, Petrus Secundus of the Fornieri family again. Gritti was uneasy about this new Pope of his rival family but he ignored the papacy to get busy on crushing naples rebels. The Pope would help the doge in that effort and it helped to bring reconciliation between the gritti and fournieri families.

Now early in 1524 Doge Gritti knew the eyes of Italy were on him, if he kept screwing up with the military and letting the Naples rebels continue, of which there was increased suspicion of spanish involvment, then he might be in deep trouble with the senate. So Andrea needed to get the job done and that is exactly what he did with some unexpected help from the Pope and his Holy Legion. Andrea Gritti was not too proud to allow for complete unification in the effort to reclaim Naples. So he headed a masterful military plan and even took control of the savoy army and led it into battle against rebels. His glorious days as a general had never been so great as he won the victory and he was once again a national Hero.

What helped Andrea even more is the celebrations of the late rennaisance era that was progressing throughout Italy. Making Italy the most enlightened and artistic nation in the world. It was the center of the arts and Andrea was a patron of it so he used it to his advantage.

Back in Venice later in the year Andrea Grittis image as a leader was transformed from a sheepish sloth to a Hero unto the Lion of St Mark. He was glorified in many ways as the Doge as a great General and a national savior. Even though some suspected he was letting the naples revolts go on before because he was a spanish sympothizer, all those suspicions were cast away when he not only beat the rebels but had every one of them either killed or imprisoned as spanish spies.

In september of 1524, Andrea was given news that France lost its war to Austria and had to cede zeeland. Furthermore, France blamed Italy for the loss because they didnt support her in the war enough. Andrea had no love for France, even if they were his main ally, he shrugged off the French strong words and went about his business for Italy. He was quoted in history as saying "tell the french king to stop his whining, and i will drink more of his wine"

To end the year out, some senators lobbied the Doge hard for exploration. Andrea gave into the senators desires and a group was sent to the african land of Nouakchott to set up a trade post. Further demands were made to Andrea to increase spending on exploration before the Spanish and English get to far ahead in the race for the new world. Andrea wanted to spend his money on the arts of Italy though, not interested in the foolish claims of a new world.

The coming years would bring dark clouds however because of one man, Neros.

1525
Doge Gritti felt he had completed the job in Naples and considered the rebels beaten. He didnt realize the worst was yet to come. He also was pro-spanish so he ignored accusations of spanish involvement in the Naples revolts. He did work with the Pope in building the army back up after losses to rebels.

Reality of more revolts on february 15 did not worry gritti, however senator Neros began to critisize Andrea about revolts and spanish involvement. Gritti wanted to settle into peaceful years and build up the country but instead he faced increasing pressure from Neros.

In September a huge revolt began in Apulia, this forced Gritti to act so he appointed his old rfriend General Damiani to lead the savoy army to route the rebels. After Damiani lost to the rebels, Gritti was under pressure so he put Damiani in prison for treason and gave command of the savoy army to senator Neros.

Neros was a brilliant fighting man and he beat the rebels. This prompted the Pope to give command of the Holy Legion to Neros because the Pope still was at odds with the Doge and Neros was a perfect tool on the popes side. The pope also used this leverage for his insults to Spain which infuriated Doge Gritti because it could mean war with spain that he didnt want. Doge Gritti refused to declare war on Spain and threatened the pope to keep his actions to religion and not politics or the Pope would be reduced to the position of bishop by Grittis command.
