This is a biography of Doge Andrea Gritti from the Italy AAR. Much of his history is made up and his years as doge will be covered in detail. This is an alternative AAR, not about just the EU game but a character created within one of the AARs for the game. Just an idea i thought about while at work, and thought i would give it a shot. Let me know what you think as i build it.

andreagritti.jpg

Andrea was born in 1455 to father Senator Duolo Gritti a Venetian nobleman and diplomat. The Gritti family went pretty far back in Venice and had much respect in the Venetian government and with the People.

Andrea grew up without a mother as she passed away at his birth. However he was given the best education of the day and grew to be a spirited boy with strong character. In 1470 while the Venetians began their quest to help unite Italy, Andrea was sent to some of the finest colleges of Italy for law and the arts. He became fascinated with rennaisance art and didnt like politics much. So in 1478 after school he went against his fathers wishes and joined the army under the borgia family.

He helped to lead and build the Italian army to a modern strong force to protect against the enemies of the day. Showing great leadership and skill General Borgia made Andrea Gritti a colonel in 1483 and assigned him to the 1st Army. With the Republic of Italy born in the next years Andrea wanted a greater role and was appointed General of the 1st Army by Doge Barbarigo. With General Borgia, Andrea became the leadership of Italies army for the next several years until Borgia left in 1498 the same year Andrea left the army to become a diplomat to France for Italy.

From 1498 to 1503 Andrea became the voice of Italy to the new and important ally of France. He was in Paris for the Royal Marriage that bonded France and Italy for a long and prosperous friendship. This is what turned his life around from his love of the military to his desire to be a politician in the new and expanding senate of Italy.

1505 After a couple of years living easy in Venice, Andrea gained a seat in Senate of italy with the pull of his family name and his great wealth and prestige. Still many of the senators were from Venice but that was quickly changing as Venice was no longer the dominant state of Italy.

1510 Andrea was neutral in the war against the Papal states led by Doge Piero Soderino. Being a strong catholic Andrea wasnt sure if what Italy was doing was the right thing. Never the less, Andrea would help in the unification effort to make all of italy including sicily and sardinia and naples a part of the Republic. Doge Soderino knew Gritti was becoming a pacifist and sent him to France to gain support for the war.

POEM BY GERALDINO SUTTIONO OF FERRARI

He took the reigns of
an unbriddled stalion
and charged her through the rough
Raising the cross, across infinate oceans
his ambition was not enough

Oh my Doge how great is he,
that stayed with honor
giving italia to me

With Power does your name begin
with wisdom does it have no end
Our Andrea Gritti our godsend.

(hey my first poem in years, took me about twenty minutes but what the heck, hope you like it:) )

During the Papal war (1510-1513), Andrea Gritti became known in the senate as the Lion because he roared with conviction and would not back down. He was a stern, bold man hardened by years of education and military leadership. His good, peaceful reputation would carry him into high positions in senate and he personally led debates against Senator fournieri over Orthodox christians and the role of the Pope in Italy.

1513-1515
When Doge Soderino tried to gain favor with England and Senator Fournieri sought after Poland. Andrea Gritti was trying desperately to gain favor with Spain but his efforts were for not and he lost credibility among his critical peers because tensions began to rise with spain at this time over who would control Naples.

In 1516 Doge Soderino said no to everything else and in a surprise move he invaded Naples. The Naples war would drag on at the dispair of the new doge Ludovico of Milan. For four long years Andrea watched as his growing country struggled against a weaker army of Naples and drew closer to conflict with Spain. That war would be the ruin of Ludovico and not at all compassionate, Andrea called Ludovico the example of failure. He rose in popularity with his charisma and strong leadership.

At the end of 1520 a no confidence vote kicked Ludovico out of power and two men fought fiercly for control of Italy. It was two men on opposite fronts. Andrea Gritti vs Theobaldo Fournieri.

In the end it would be Fournieri who would win the election to be Doge and it affected Andrea greatly as he worked harder to his cause. Gritti constantly challenged Fournieris new policies against the Orthodox christians and changes in the Papacy. When things turned sour for Fournieri , Gritti led the battle cry to elect a new Doge and so the bold Senator from Venice got his wish when in a confidence vote, the senate ousted Fournieri in opposition of his policies.

This propelled the now massive figure head of Andrea Gritti to power over Italy in 1523 as he was voted in as Doge of Italy.

1523 THE RISE OF A DOGE

Andrea Gritti came to power directly due to ex-doge Fournieris controversial policies against Orthodox christians as well as his changes in the Papacy against popular demand. Andrea was not exactly prepared to rule as he didnt expect the turn of events to go so swiftly. However he had the support of much of the senate in the beginning when he put into place his own policies however things changed.

His first act as Doge was to send the army on the venetian fleet to regain corfu from orthodox rebels left over by Fournieri. He further opened tolerance for all religions in the country and with boldness he kept the new Pope quiet on all matters. He was a no nonsence kind of man and his law would rule whether the Pope liked it or not.

Gritti was famous for his rousing speeches before senate and he wrote his influential scrolls of the peace party, which failed later. His ideas for peace was one reason he was voted in however he didnt balance peace and wisdom. So he began to downsize the military to save money for the treasury. He further began to work with Austria on a treaty of universal peace against the wishes of the unification party members who wanted war to unify all of Italy.

Andrea Gritti ignored his advisors about the military and while the army grew weaker, revolts began to spring up in Naples increasingly. Suspicion of Spanish involvement in the revolts fueled anger in the senate and by the end of 1523 Andrea Grittis stubborn leadership had already gotten him enemies in senate.

In fall of 1523 Gritti was dealt a huge blow when he allowed there to be a vote in senate on two of his most debated policies. First was the tollerance towards the new protestants of germany of which the senate sided with Gritti and made tolerance to them. However Gritti put his non aggression treaty of vienna up in the air at the mercy of a growingly hostile senate and to his dismay the treaty was voted down by senate. This act of cooperation with the senate did get him some favor but he knew Italies future would be marred with war against spain for sicily.

Gritti just didnt take the revolts in naples seriously and thought they would easily be squashed. He wanted to focus on dreams of world peace and diplomacy and to fill his pockets with money, after all he was a venetian trader.

Andrea would need to rethink his policies in the coming years if his leadership would continue, after the last two doges were ousted by the senate he was determined not to be the third.
