I noticed that activating the humanism idea stops/slows the progress of the religious turmoil disaster, even if none of the ideas of the group have been unlocked. I guess this is a bug, since it allows avoiding the disaster at no cost (except that one idea slot is occupied for some years).
In my case, I converted from catholic to reformed, which reduced my religious unity to around 50%. Since the missionaries work extremely fast in the first 10 years after conversion, it was enough to fill the slot of my third idea by the humanism idea group temporarily. After 5 years or so, my religious unity was again higher than 75% and the disaster didn’t progress any further, even when I removed the idea from the slot again.
