Has anyone figured out how to enable the custom vehicles you download from steam to work in game? and if so how does that work? I've got a bus but I can't figure out how to make it available in game

All you do is enable it in the assets panel which should happen automatically. You will have to wait a min or so for them to start populating the map.
Fastest population: Turn off all bus depots. Wait for the buses to get back to the depots. Re-enable depots.
