The way ironman is designed this functionally already exists. By default the game writes save files into your personal directory. Assuming the user has set up some sort of automatic backup of the personal directory (which is a good idea to protect against accidental deletion/modification of important files), when the game automatically writes an ironman save file, backup system picks up the change and archives it. Afterwards one can get various past game states from the archive. From the point of view of archiving system, the user making poor decision in game is just like the user accidentally overwriting any other file so it provides ability to revert to an earlier state of the file. Needless to say that for some users ironman save files *are* the important personal files :)

Having to restart campaigns 50 - 60 year in because RNG doesn't go your way saps all the fun out of this game.
The whole point of Ironman is that you can't roll back the save. If you made it possible to roll back the save it is no-longer Ironman, and just regular game mode, which you can already play in.

Can't believe OP is still doubling down on this. The point of Ironman is that you have to roll with the punches. The whole purpose is that you get an unfavourable RNG outcome and have to deal with it. There is no shame in turning off Ironman if you don't like it.

Honestly I don't understand the people who point out "easy" (or circuitous) ways to circumvent Ironman when you can just turn it off. Why not just turn it off?

The whole point of Ironman is to make it where you can't save scum, so when you get achievements they are legit. The random factors are something to factor into your calculations as you expand. You must both plan for getting the outcome you want, and the one you don't.

Unless you're trying to get BBB, do some of you really go out of your way to save scum literal cheap - free clay that makes you win the run instantly by 1480.
I wonder is your England opening move do always press PU on FRA?

And then we get posts like "There is no point to play further than 1600, nothing to do lulz"
Just use "integrate bur" and you get it 100% of the time

And here i kill all my strong claim male heirs as Burgundy so I get the Mary casino event to fire cuz I love the kick it gives you if HAB and FRA are going to dow you.

Well anyway to add to the discussion, after playing Burgundy 3x for how fun it was, I can say the succession event is a convoluted mess, just when I thought i had figured it out HAB and FRA declared on me both despite me being allied to both so it seems like opinion doesn't always matter.

Ironman mode as a whole is completely pointless given the numerous methods of getting around it listed in this thread. There's way too many issues with the game not following its own rules (see: bugs, lying gamestates) to justify forcing the player to play by an unwavering ruleset of their design.

I don't see how being (essentially) forced to restart because the game is opaque is worthy of being kept in the game. There's a load of disingenuous arguments here (why not just console command) complaining about what essentially amounts to a bunch of pixels on your steam profile (that anyone can get anyway without even playing the game both outside and inside the game if they wanted to).

So just don't play ironman?

You are checking a box that says "don't let me save the game", then complaining that the game doesn't allow you to save. What the fuck do you expect? You complain about bugs, yet it is clearly a bug if you can save the game after enabling ironman.

Ironman has never been able to stop save scumming. Its just made the save scumming less convenient. The attempt to enforce a strict ruleset when the game can't do the same is utterly pointless.

I'm saying that Ironman is pointless; its easily circumventable and doesn't actually solve the issues that it's pretending to solve. My suggestion is to remove it entirely and not pretend that Ironman is a determiner of cheating or not, since it obviously (by several people in this very thread, and the dozens of save editing patches) isn't.

In the grand scheme of France achievements the Burgundian Inheritance is not even that big of a deal! It's really good, yes! But also, BBB is still perfectly easy to complete without it. Better than Napoleon is more tedious than challenging, the BI doesn't really do anything. The BI hardly matters for a WC. You're France, it's not going to make or break your game.

This is an entirely disingenuous argument and utterly misses the point of my statement.
You have no argument. If you want to play without ironman, don't have ironman on. You said Ironman is pointless. So turn it off. What's your problem? Why are you trying to sabotage the game by removing features?

I do not care that much about achievements (though I still do), I do care about playing the countries I chose to the peak of their abilities (unless I go for weird memey things like Protestant Theocracy Japan).

In other words, any people that do not think Burgundy is strictly necessary should play a Castile run where they marry local talent. It's essentially the same.

I stated my argument. If you want to address it, its right there. Repeating "why don't you just turn it off" is intellectually lazy and essentially the equivalent of saying "no u". If you have nothing else to say on the matter, fine, but there's no need to keep posting, we've got it already.

Ironman does not do what it claims to do (you can still savescum as much as you want, there's dozens of ways to abuse the game to get anything you want and still be in ironman, there's dozens of different ways to unlock achevos). Its a broken feature and it always has been. Fixing it would take far, far, far more effort than can ever be justified (and would also likely be illegal for many nations). If there's a feature that's broken (which Ironman objectively is as it does not accomplish its stated goals) and cannot be fixed, it should be removed. There's already replacement systems for auto-saving; the only other things that Ironman does are simple self-control issues (if you don't want to use the console, don't use the console) which aren't worth making or keeping a feature for.
