Living as I do in Eastern Maine far from the highway and most forms of advanced transit, I would love to see one city builder game that emulates the experience super rural communities like mine

What it would look like is a "city" full of very low density buildings with maybe a school etc, and a string of dirt roads that randomly spawn an eclectic mix of trailers, forestry lots, the odd cranberry bog or other small farm, here and there a small store or gas station or garage, all spawning on its own with no zoning guidance simply because the road is there, and frequently in complete contravention to zoning guidance, digging their own wells rather than relying on a citywide water network, and a random string of dirt roads spawning and stretching to wherever the people who own the land want them. All connected to the real world by nothing but maybe a pitiful network of 2 lane roads.

To really emulate the rural lifestyle this stuff would have to spawn almost completely on its own, the only involvement of the city being building and maintaining the paved roads and, and maintaining a tiny police and fire presence and maybe one hospital within an hour's drive, and the citizens doing everything else for themselves. I'd love a mod that captured that spirit and made it an integral game mode

well, you can't get it to pop up automatically, but I think you can already sort of emulate this in the current game.

Yeah, IVIaarten, you do a good job of emulating rural areas just outside your city (I love your work, BTW), but the 25-tile map size is just too small to emulate the truly large-scale of rural areas, far away from city centers.

That's beautiful. How did you get some fields to be different colours?

It's pretty easy actually. I just made some 4x12 and 4x16 parks in the asset editor, and gave them the grain and dirt texture (don't forget to removed tourism and entertainment values).
I emulated some 'plowed fields' by just plopping a load of dirt pedestrian paths (bonus is, you can make curved fields this way). Plop some trees/bushes etc in various places to emulate orchards etc.

This is merely a test, so have that in mind, it's nothing special. Plus, it's my first attempt at this and it's kinda WIP.

I still haven't been able to develop the game's farms here (although I have power and water) because this is merely a bad city, but it's a good way to test this while trying to get the negative modifier monuments

@FX2K this is really good for specifically emulating that farm feel. My only criticism is that the water overlay makes it harder to plop these and see the effect, you have to place it, and then exit the water view to see the look. Still, it's excelent to already be able to do these.

Looking forward to seeing some screenshots :D

very nice "alley" feel. The new update helps great with the placement.

and my little WIP farming area. I need to buy more land to really unlock the meat of the farming region still, so its pretty small.

Still if you can get lucky enough to have fields pop up on the sides and a warehouse/pole barn whatever you want to call it in the middle, I think it looks pretty good, and you can actually pack in a decent amount of industries.
