Chapter 7:The Clash of the Emperors

Religion1511AAR.png

Following the Protestant Reformation, France became the largest Protestant nation in the world. Despite that fact, the country was far from homogeneous when it came to religion. Large swathes of territory in central and southern France had yet to embrace the One True Faith of His Magnificence the Emperor. This would be at the source of many revolts in the region, the worst of which occured in 1531, when Catholic Zealots from Orleanais revolted and capture Ile-De-France and Maine. The rebels in Ile-de-France and Maine were quickly suppressed, but Orleanais defected to the Papal States. Such an open act of defiance by the Pope would not go unpunished, the Empire was now at war with the Pope. The Holy Roman Emperor, then the Ruler of Bavaria, soon declared war on France, for it would not let them push around a nation of the HRE. This proved to be fatal to France's campaign: it had underestimated the Holy Roman Emperor's resolve and military strength. After a few minor victories by France over Bavarian forces, Bavaria's Imperial army attacked French troops in what would be known as the Battle of Champagne. The largest French fortress in the West was taken in less than 17 days, costing the lives of a 10 000 men, and resulting in the capture of at least 4000 more...

This would prove to be a devastating blow to French forces. Bavarian troops continued their advance towards Paris, killing all who stood in their path. All hope seemed lost, the Empire was going to lose it's 3rd consecutive war. But a man emerged in one of France's darkest hours: Jean-François De Montague.

General Jean-François De Montague, later known as Emperor François I

This outstanding General rose through the French military hierarchy astonishingly quickly. On the 1st of March 1533, on the outskirts of Paris, French forces led by General Jean-François De Montague, outnumbered 3 to 1 (approximately 30 000 to 12 000). Using hit and run tactics, the young French General led to a devastating victory over the Bavarians. Over 13 000 Bavarians were captured in the battle, another 9000 were killed. Only 4500 Frenchmen died that day.

Following this victory, Bavaria was brought to the negociation table and a peace settlement was reached. Although concessions were made by both sides, the qere so inconsequential that many historian consider it a white peace. In 1537, Orleanais revolted, claiming independence from the Papal States. The small Duchy was annexed by France the following day. When Henri II died in 1541 from a severe illness, he had no male children. He therefore willed his throne to Jean-François De Montague, who later became known as Emperor François I...

Chronicles of the Saxon People
1542-1565: The Prussian Formation

New Chronicler: Adolf von Anhalt (The first Foreign chronicler)

1542:
Although in Regency, the Brandenburg Kingdom was able to annex the Teutonic Order, adding Memel to their realm. Although this was only a minor gain for the Kingdom, it can now mark the Eastern border of the Brandenburgian Kingdom.

EU3_77.jpg

1543:
King Friedrich Wilhelm the III rose to the throne of the Kingdom. In a royal assembly held in the province of Brandenburg, the great King gave a glorious speech--
"My people! For the past two centuries we have been attempting to become a unified people. The Southern Saxons still feel they should remain free from us. However, I do not believe that this should stand in our way! Saxons of the North, Hamburgians, Danes, Pommeranians, Teutons, Hinterpommeranians, Hannoverians, Polish; we must not unite under a flag that does not represent everyone. WE MUST UNITE UNDER A NEW FLAG! We are no longer the Kingdom of Brandenburg....WE ARE THE KINGDOM OF PRUSSIA!"
The Prussian Kingdom's prestige is well known among my home. I feel that it would be advantageous of us to join the Prussian Reformed Kingdom.

EU3_82.jpg

1544:
The year would mark Prussia's first war. Poland, Mecklenburg, Bremen, and Norway fight against our armies but to no avail. Within months, Mecklenburg is annexed, bringing the rich trade center of Lubeck into Prussian control. Similarly, Norway and Bremen quickly sue for peace, offering 50 ducats a piece. Now the attention of the troops must turn East to the remaining Polish forces.

EU3_83.jpg

1545:
Peace was quickly reached as Polish troops began to flounder against the 30000+ men of the Prussian Army. Though more could have, and possible should have, been asked for, only 50 ducats are received along with Polands claims on Poznan and Kaliz being renounced.

1546-1547:
Messengers returned from Brabant and France, arriving in Brandenburg in the winter of 1546. They bring news of a great naval and land force being constructed and trained. King Friedrich Wilhelm III recognizes that our navy is weak and needs strengthening. Fourteen new ships are constructed for the transportation of our forces. Now protection of those ships is needed.

1548:
It would seem that not all Northern Saxons agreed with the change to a Prussian Kingdom. Albrecht Friedrich Holtzeadurff and a coalition of 8000 troops rise up under the old Brandenburg flag. The Nationalists are quickly suppressed by Friedrich Wilhelm III himself.
After the rebels were put down, Friedrich Wilhelm III met with Czar Nikolai I of Russia to discuss matters of expansion. Nikolai I, whom recently conquered much of Scandinavia, stated no interest in moving past Sjaelland in Denmark. Because of this, Friedrich Wilhelm III announced that the borders of Prussia will end with Plock and Sjeradz in the Polish Kingdom. Papers were drafted in Russian, German, and Latin and signed by the King and Czar.

1549:
War once again hits our Kingdom. Venice, our ally, declared war on Mantua, allied with Bavaria and Savoy. Our armies were successful. Mantua was quickly annexed by Venice. However, the remaining Kingdoms would take more time to subdue.

EU3_88.jpg

1551:
Peace was reached with Bavaria to cede Oberpflaz to our Kingdom. This province marks the first campaign to unify the Southern Saxons, although Bavaria claims to not acknowledge the Saxon culture.
Additionally, with the focus reshifted to the South, our King agreed to an alliance with King Balthasar IV from Thurungia. Perhaps one day our two nations will be joined.

1552:
Perhaps following in our footsteps, the Republic of Venice now wishes to be recognized as Italy. Though unable to attend himself (hopefully not seen as an insult to Doge Michele Grimani), envoys from our nation traveled to Rome to celebrate with the new Italian Republic.

1553:
Again, much like our nation, one year after Doge Michele Grimani renamed his Republic to Italy, they declared war on Milan. Again, at request from the Doge himself, our armies focused on the Northern allies of Milan, mainly consisting of the Palantine.
During this time, two great events happened. The Artist Ferdinand von Anhalt was hired to help bring stability to the realm and help draft new masterpieces for the Prussian court. However, while our nation attempted to fight a war to the south, powers to the west entered a war with Great Britain. France, Brabant, and Portugal (those who had been building a large fleet) declared war on the Anglo-Saxon's stating that the colonial expansion of the Kingdom was unfair and unjust. Our King can do nothing but watch as the West enters a bloody conflict.

EU3_90.jpg

1554:
Peace is agreed upon with The Palantine, much to the dismay of our Italian allies. Franken and 75 ducats are the prize for this war, further cementing our claims to the Southern Saxons. Our King feels that although the Northern Saxons are unified, all the Germanic/Saxon nations would be happier under one flag.
Because of our hasty peace and in attempts to apologize to Italy, our King sent spies to the Palantine to revolt against their leaders. With any luck, our their nation will tear itself apart from the inside.
During the decade since the formation of Prussia, our King has been eying the province of Raitbor, which fell under Hungarian control. In his eyes, the province rightly belongs to the Prussian Kingdom and has warned King Ulaszlo IV of Hungary no to go to war with anyone or swift justice shall be done to them.

1556:
Rudolf von Dossow, a commandant, was hired to serve in the Kings court. His ability to discipline our troops will make them a fiercer opponent on the battle field.

1559:
Our beloved king, the founder of Prussia, died as war once again broke out. Italy declared war on Austria, who had over the years regrown and become a powerful force.

EU3_91.jpg

1560:
The Regency Council agreed on a new national idea, instituting a National Bank in order to reduce the inflation our nation had built up during the Reformation years.
The war lingers on and even though we are losing ground in Prussia, Austria's troops cannot keep the charge going forever. We will chase them down and execute every last one of them.

1562:
The King of Hungary has sent us a message--
"Stay our of our expansion into Poland and Bohemia and we shall give you theprovince of Raitbor"
Although the Council is apprehensive about the agreement, the prospect of Raitbor is to great to pass up.

1563:
Heinrich the First rises to the throne. Though an incompetent man, within a month of his reign, peace is struck with Austria----they shall pay us 75 ducats and cede Niederbayern.
Hungary has expanded to quick and to wide. Unable to control their rebels, Saxony breaks off. Quick to act, our King enters a peace with the newly founded republic. Doge Joachim Bretfeld quickly agrees to terms.

EU3_92.jpg

1565:
It seems forever since we have declared a war of our own. We shall have to wait even longer. Italian troops call for our arms against Milan and their allies. We shall take the Holy Roman Emperor while Italy deals with the south!

Russian Revolution
Chapter 1: Seizing the throne

1542: A cold Winter breeze

After the departure of the last legit ruler, Russia has been in control of dictator generals. The poor people have suffered for many decades as these generals played their own political games often also fighting each other. Russia has fallen into a state of decay, there is no single centralised authority and the old palaces and fortifications have fallen into disrepair.

On a hazy afternoon, a man named Nikolai Kaluglin enters the Gatchina Palace in Gatchina just south of Neva. The man walks trough the Chesma Gallery, looking at the pictures of the great leaders that led Russia before its decay. Nikolai, having been born after the last king abdicated wondered how Russia would be with a centralised power that would conquer the rest. Exiting the palace, he rides on his horse to Novgorod, seat of General Feodor Godunov, one of the most powerfull generals in Russia controlling Novgorod and parts of Scandinavia. Late at night, Nikolai enters a local tavern sitting down at a table in the backroom. After having waited for 2 hours a man in a brown robe enters the room and sits down silently. Nikolai presents the man with a letter, and as the man reads the letter he knodds as saying yes and leaves the room. Upon the next day Nikolai equipes his weaponry and makes his way to the Yaroslavl Palace courts. Nikolai meets up there with several men dressed in guards uniforms. after having signalled to begin, all men take out their swords and without speaking a word begin running towards the palace gates. Because the guards of this palace are always drunk (just like their commanders) the attackers can dispatch most of them without much sound and effort. Once they reach the palace throneroom, they find the general sleeping on the throne. Nikolai imprisons him and lets the soldiers gather in the palace square. As the last few soldiers line up, Nikolai steps up the stairs and begins his speech. "For too long has Russia fallen in decay. For too long has the Hungarian Kingdom mocked us. For too long has the Russian Empire lacked a centralised power" at this point Nikolai presented from his collar, a small piece of paper showing the royal family tree. Nikolai presents himself to be the last heir to the Vladimir-Moscow line. "I have the authority given by god to ris us from the Tartar invaders and return our brothers to the Orthodox faith!. I have gods authority to smite the Hungarians from their throne and take their land!. And above all, i have the authority to rule Russia!" as Nikolai stepped down from the chairs an ear splitting cheer arose from the crowd.

In the following days, coups against the generals rose up everywhere. Generals were killed, executed or banished from the Russian realm untill Nikolai held all of Russia in his hands. On the 15th of September, Nikolai had himself crowned Emperor Nikolai I of Russia Czar of the Russian Federation and Defender of the Orthodox Church in the Basilisk of Novgorod. Russia soonly grew to have the largest army in the world with more reserves and recruits than ever. The new generation's morale rose to the roof. They had never experienced a ruler and were joyfull that Rusia finally had a future.

1544 - Time for War

Upon Nikolai's ascension, The Byzantine Empire declared war on the Golden horde. Nikolai seeing possiblities to take hold of more tartar lands came to the Byzantine aid and flooded troops into Horde territory. All forts including the capital fell within 3 months but Russian troops stopped at the border of the Byzantine Empire occasionally helping shallow border fights between Byzantines and Turks but mainly keeping the armies back. Peace was concluded quickly as Russia gained Astrakhan, Burthasia, Mordvar, Kazan and Bolgar. Astrakhan was sold to the Byzantines for free. One year after, Russia declared war on Yaroslavl to draw an ever weakening Sweden into a war. Yaroslavl was captured in a siege of 10 days and annexed just one month later. Sweden held out longer but the armies were wiped out by the russian spahi cavalry, one of the most feared cavalry in the west. Sweden lost all its territories except stockholm to Russia. another 5 years later, Nikolai invaded Finland, drawing Norway into war as well. Finaldn lost Xexholm to Russia, moved its government to Ösel and became a tributary state of Russia, providing a naval base in the Baltic Sea. Norway lost all its territory except Akerhus. Nikolai now content with his areas in Scandinavia, made war plans against the Golden Horde but were put in the fridge because of the emerging American Crisis.

1553 - American Crisis.

1553 started as an easy year for Nikolai. the recently gained territory was a great boost to the military and economy. The Russian military was now build up from European standard technology because of the recent Scandinavian aquisitions, combined with the Western arms trade event. The first signs were emerging from anxious French duplomats warning the Russians of a massive war coming. Russian spies were dispatched to Portugal and France. These spies found out that France and Portugal were making a secret alliance to smite Great Britain. Foolish as Nikolai was, did he send an envoy to Great Britain warning him of what was going to happen. Just 10 days later, France declared war on Great Britain also aided by Portugal and Brabant (the latter being unforseen by Russian spies).

Expansion

Britain was now a strong country under the greatest ruler it had ever pocessed,Maxmillian the 1st.The tribes of the west in America were subdued and being converted and relations with other powers couldnt have been better.Colonies were founded but the most contraverial of these was the small island of Jamacia. It was on this island that friction arose between Portugal and Britain.Portugal had half hearted claims over the whole of the carribean, something Britain laughed at."

Max-"Greedy Portuguese swine, english blood bled for this soil and we shall keep it!"

In retaliation portugal colonised Mobile which was going to be colonised in the future by Britian.GB thought to take revenge by attacking the Aztecs and thats what we did.Taking and annexing it.From then on Portugal did every diplomatic insult under the sun:Spys, cancelling MA,breaking our royal marriage and building up troops on our borders. This worried Max who wanted peace anf prosperity for the Empire, this was not to be.

Max then sought assurance from the King of France that he would help if Portugal was to attack GB and not the other wat round,GB agreed and we felt relieved. What slipped our radar was the build up of Dutch troops in the colonies.

Betrayal

Word reached Britain from Russia that a attack was to take place on us by 3 nations,France, portugal and Brabant.

Max-"Ah shiiit..."

Britain wasnt prepared for war having a small fleet that was only starting to be built.War was declared and GB braced herself for the storm.Immediately Brabant and France landed large armies in Kent over running the small local garrisons.Britian was in dire straits having no men on the mainland with the main home army stuck in Ireland.A transport fleet was sent to ireland to pick up the army for defence of England.

In the colonies it was a different story with GB having 35 thousand battle hardened troops that soon over whelmed the Portuguese troops, although in central america it was a one sided battle with GB having only 5k Cavalry against alot more Portuguese with good generals.Max wisely choice to give up central america and allow Portugal to waste troops on a non-vital part of the empire.GB troops moved north from Mobile to meet the armies of Brabant beating them in a blitzkrieg war till they occupied no British territory.

In Britian the tide was turning with french armies suffering massive attritions and Britian building up larger armies on her home ground and oushing back the french.France peaced out for 25 ducats, something GB could afford.Brabant and Portugal were now alone and Britian now had naval superiority in the channel.Brabant was soon blockaded while her 10k army was beaten and all men captured or killed.Brabant then white peaced and Portugal was the only one left standing.Peace was signed but Max was stilled pissed that they had seized Jamacia, which was against International Law.

Britian had won the war, gained only 2 war exhaustion and lost only one colony and 25 ducats. In our eyes it was a victory.Relations were patched up with Great Britains former allies and Britian helped Brabant fight rebels that had occupied its capital.Max had decided the only way to avoid war between the western powers again was to be nice instead of vengeful and grievances GB suffered were forgiven.

However, this war had shown how vulnerable GB had become and the army was increased, more was invested in it so that we now had new uniform troops :p and the navy was increased to 60 Big ships and more are planned to be built each year.

Adventure in India

Britian then built a new fleet of 20 transports and 5 cavarels to escort a large army of 20 000 men to india to join the french in carving up the sub-continent.War was then delcared on Vij. and it looks to be a walkover with the anglo-french alliance having better equiped troops and more of them.

Rule Britania!
Britannia rule the waves.
Britons never, never, never shall be slaves

Two things.

Byzantium is Eastern, right? Don't worry about it France...when the time comes just fight for what you want.

Also, yes, there was a Prussia before, but their flag did not represent what the nation was about. They were pretenders and thus rightfully annexed. My King recognizes the Prussian Flag as the unifier of the Northern Saxons (which include those on the Baltic Coast)
