The Years of War

My longest post yet:

1495
January-July
The first act of the new year was on the 15th of February, when Mamuk Khan orders the expansion of the fortress in Orenberg, and more troops are recruited in Astrakhan.

We continue to keep good relations with Crimea. We hope to vassalize them so we don't have to call on our allies to support us in the war to go across Crimean territory. If they don't support us, then the alliance would be sundered, and we would have to rely on Russia to reinvite them, and we don't want to take the chance that they don't.

On March 6, we send our final group of colonvicts to Alga. We hope to somehow gain some more before the war with Georgia, so the additional resources the city would command would greatly help in the war effort.

On April Fools' Day, our merchants approach Mamuk Khan with wonderful news! Our merchants have become so confident with their line of work that they feel they can journey to Centers of Trade and earn us money [trade level 1- early renaissance]. We immediately send one to Astrakhan to compete with Russian, Crimean, Turkish, and Teuton merchants in the markets.

Exactly one month later, the Council of Infrastructure delivers more good news. They have developed a workable technique for the implementation of taxes [inf. level 1- early renaissance]. We immediately take advantage of this and begin shopping around for a suitable official for the capital.

The Khan grows restless. "This life has grown pointless!" he tells me in one of our numerous correspondences. He is hungry for blood. With over 60 thousand troops under his command, he is confident that we can crush Georgia. Despite all my efforts to dissuade him, he sets the date for the war on August 15th. We must prepare...

My cavalry force rides southwest to Astrakhan to meet Mamuk. He is going to give command of a large contingent of infantry to take on the walls of the second province of Georgia to prevent troop recruitment.

August
On August 1st, a massive revolt occurs right under Mamuk's nose. 35 thousand former Astrakhanis rebel against our governent. They are put down in a week, but at some 4000 casualties to our army. It is a large army, so the losses are not as bad as they could have been, but it is still a blow to Mamuk that rebel sentiments could have persisted for so long.

The next day, my forces arrive, reinforcing the cavalry sections of our regiments, but the infantry is still weak. We almost rescheduled our war plans, but decided against it. August 15th it is.

The Georgian War: 8/12/95-3/25/96
August 15: We Declare War.
Greece, Ryazan, and Pskov dishonor our alliance, but thankfully, Russia, Portugal, and most importantly Crimea rally to our cause. Crimea has large armies across the border, one under direct control of their Khan, which we hope they don't bring to the front. We hope to absorb Georgia entire to get their port, and we don't need power struggles interfering with our sieges.

On October 12, the Khan's men and his Crimean supporters besiege the capital in Sochi, while my men arrive in Georgia. The Georgian army was wiped out in Crimean Kouban days before, so our sieges persist undisturbed.

By November 5th, the city my forces are besieging is in flames, and I order an assault.
In a week, the city is ours, and my troops turn west to Sochi to quicken the capitol's demise.

On December 2nd, an undisciplined rabble of Georgian farmers attack our sieging armies under Mamuk and are promptly destroyed. Shortly afterward, an ambassador from the city approaches with an offer of Georgia in exchange for peace. He is turned away within seconds. We want the seaport and will settle for nothing less...

On the 10th, my soldiers arrive in Sochi, and, emboldened by this, the Khan orders an assault on the capitol.Through some weakness in the Crimean commander, they manage to rout our forces. More reinforcements are on the way from Crimea, so a follow-up shouldn't be too far away.

1496
January-July
On February 15th, after months of sieging, our men assault the much-weakened walls [-3] of Sochi with the help of some 10000-odd men of Crimea. Even so, our forces are turned away, but I predict the city will fall within three months...

Early in March, two items arrive that are of great interest to us. The former Russian Alliance member, Greece, has joined the Danes in their alliance. More news from the Russian Alliance is more encouraging, though. Kazan, a neighbor of Ryazan and Russia, has been invited to join our alliance. I think that Russia may be aiming to use the dishonorance of our alliance as a justification of a war of conquest against Ryazan....

25 days into March, my prediction came true. Sochi falls, and we deliver a ultimatum to the King of the fallen nation: a pledge of fealty and servitude to Mamuk Khan, or death for him and his people. He wisely chooses the former.

Screenie3.txt

August-December
September 1 brings a midsized rebellion in Sochi (13000 men) which is put down in less than a week.

On the 18th day of September, a representative of the North African Empire of the Hafsid Dynasty proposing the marriage of two prominent figures in our respective royal families. Seeking to improve relations with nations around the world, we reply affirmatively, and the bond is sealed.

In Mid-October, our wise Khan gives the order to appoint a taxcollector in the former capital of Georgia. This is an effort to raise population in order to recruit more men to replace the casualties of the Georgian War.

November goes quietly, as does December, only interrupted by the news that a nation called Algiers established dynastic ties with our friends the Hafsids.

1497
January
Strange news from Kurgan. Mamuk Khan has been overthrown by his brother Abalak, who now wears the title of Khan. Mamuk is furious.
"I will not stand for this!" Mamuk shouted.
"There is no need to yell, my liege, I am sure th--"
"No need to yell?NO NEED TO YELL!?!? My brother just claimed the throne that is rightfully mine!"
"I'm sure it's just a misun--"
"Just be quiet! I will not drop my title as Khan, and I will never let down my army! If we were not locked in by Crimean and Persian territory, I would ride to Ishimbay right now and cut off his head!!"
"Perhaps we need not be trapped in, my lord."
"I'm listening..."
"To our east, there are Persian lands. Minimally fortified, they are guarded only by 951 men for the both of them. If we can regain all casualties lost in the war, we can quickly overrun them both, and use Armenia as a bargaining chip for Azerbajdzan, which would connect our two stretches of territory."
"I like the idea... TO ARMS!!"
"No, no, wait, my friend. We must replace our casualties first, then wait for Persia to be in another state of unrest and rebellion. Then we strike...."

In preparation for this, a total of 4000 infantry are raised in former Georgia, and [5000/1000] in Astrakhan. The rightful Khan looks more and more gleeful as he hears the rising sounds of steel and hoof.

February-August
On the 15th, the Khan and I bring the Horde to Georgia, in order to be closer to our respective targets.

The same day, meaningful new arrives. War! Spain declares on Navarra, whose allies of Venice, the Mameluks, and Serbia all support her. Spain's allies, excepting England, all join as well. Europe bursts into flames.

Then, all that is left in Europe begins to smolder. Finland declares war on Spain, whose allies all support her, but Finland's allies support them as well. Turkey, Vinland, Sweden, and Scotland jump into the fray.

A month after the Horde arrives, on April 4, our recruits are finished with their training. We start looking for more in Georgia and Astrakhan, all infantry for now.

June 9: Tragedy. Mamuk Khan is assassinated. By his brother. Abalak was seen escaping from the camp shortly after Mamuk was found dead with a dagger in his heart. This is truly a sad day, but the Khan's plan will go on undisturbed. I will personally lead the assault on Armenia, and then ride east to Azerbajdzan.

3 Days later comes the end of the Navarro-Spanish War. Navarra is no more, and Spain grows ever stronger.

The First Persian War: 8/12/97-1/15/98
War is declared on August 12th. Russia and Portugal dishonor the pact, but Kazan and ever-helpful Crimea join me.

Early in September, my forces arrive in Armenia, while our new recruits from Astrakhan arrive in our real target province. The city in Armenia proves a pushover. It falls in 2 days.

On the 25th of September, soon after my arrival with the bulk of the army, we receive some unwelcome visitors. 6000 Persian disrupt the siege, but are undisciplined and are annihilated in 3 days. We return to the siege.

During this time it comes to my attention that Russia has rejoined our alliance through the goodness of its new leader's heart (Crimea).
It is good to have a good friend at the head, but I can't help but feel that we are a more suitable choice....
Portugal, on the other hand, has thrown their lot in with Eire and England, one of the only alliances not at war.

On October 28th, we have our first real battle since the conquest of Astrakhan. 35K Persians vs. 62,000 combined Sibir-Crimean forces. This looks like vast superiority, and it is. The battle is over on November 1st with less than 3000 Persians limping off the field.

Not wanting to try my luck against any stronger armies the Persians may have, I order an assault on the same day. The walls, though weakened [-1] stay up, and we will have to try again once the morale returns to normal.

The morale never gets back up, but on January 12th, the city defenses surrender, and Azerbadjzan is ours!

We send a representative demanding the province in exchange for peace. His head is sent back in a basket, so, I guess they'd like to keep it for a while. We will wait a month and try again.

Apparently, the sight of our Crimean allies heading towards Tabriz made them change their minds, because three days later they return our offer of Azerbajdzan, and we accept, finally connecting the two halves of our realm.

Two things I've noticed about peace offers: it helps to have one more star than you are asking for, and often times what you describe happens: they turn down your demand, and then offer the same thing, thus wasting one of their own diplomats.

And I doubt Crimea will agree to be vassalized as long as they are alliance leader, so you may want to hope that the alliance can be at peace for ten years and you make the offer before they do. In any case, always have one diplomat on standby in case they drop out like Russia did, making you leader. That way you'll be able to invite them back in immediately.

I've noticed that too, and that's why I went after Armenia as well as Azerbajdzan.

The first time I went through this war, Crimea pulled out their Khan and commandeered the siege of Azerbadjzan. Sort of fortunately (from a different point of view), my game froze and the last time I had saved was before the start of my war (before the start of those Spanish wars, too, and they didn't happen the first time), and the Crimeans didn't bring the monarch that time, letting me take control of Azerbazdjan.

(btw, I know I keep changing the spelling of Azerbazjdan. I can't ever remember the spelling, so I change its spelling every time to get it right at least once. Azerbazjdan, Azerbajdzan, Azerbadzjan, Azerbadjzan, Azerbaddion, Azzerbadjin, Azerbadchon....)

And though I have seen the AI offer 3 provinces, I dont recall I ever succesfully claimed 3 provinces, not even if I controlled 6 or 7 including their capitol.

Hello Morpheus. Great job so far, please keep it up. I like reading about the smaller less used nations.

As far as peace, though, I've only ever been able to claim 3 tewrritories when I can annex the whole country, but choose not to...instead taking the 3 of my choice.

Keep up the good work!

They need to make it easier for the AI to cough up 3 provinces. I always usually get enough to demand 3, but they always refuse. Now my standard strategy is to take two provinces and the capital and immediately demand those two and 250d. I just ignore whatever the AI is doing in my country and just go straight for the provinces. After peace, the AI who is besieging one of my provinces has to go home anyway:cool: .

1498
February-August
At the start of February, I decide that Azerbadjzan is no place for a Siberian Horde to stay, and pack up to return to Kurgan. I must see this new Khan. Abalak. The murderer.

On February 26th, I decide that there needs to be some kind of protection for our port in Sochi, so I commission the construction of a warship, to become the backbone of a new Siberian fleet. Somehow the words "Siberian" and "fleet" don't sound as they should be used together, though... no matter.

We also receive word that our Trade Center in Astrakhan is growing in wealth. It now affects not only old Sibir and Astrakhan, but part of the Golden Horde, the former Georgian provinces, and Azerbajdzan. It also is starting to compete away Isfahan, by taking control of Armenia from it. We now gain 3 ducats a year, but with higher trade levels coming, that will increase as well.

March 2nd. Our engineers approach us with very good news. They have discovered the secrets of a metal cannonball found in a Persian camp. Even though we do not have any cannon, we can hurl these over the walls of forts to attack. It will certainly work better than baskets full of rotten cabbage, that's for sure....

On March 28th, my men arrive in Kurgan, and for the first time, I meet Abalak face to face. He promotes me to the high rank of General for my work in Persia and Georgia, but I will never acknowledge this from a murdering snake like him, and will remain a Lt. General in the Siberian Army. He is an evil man, completely unfit to rule our nation! Something must be done....

I also meet Mamuk's sons, Aquis and Oasim. Aquis is of good strong qualities, as is Oasim, and in 1500, I believe that Aquis will be capable to rule, with my tutorage during these two years, at any rate.

On June 9th, anniversary of Mamuk's death, irony strikes. Mamuk's murderer is murdered. Abalak is found slumped over a book, a half-full glass of wine in his hand. Upon tasting the wine, the person who discovered him died. The next discoverer did the same, and the next, and the next, and it wasn't until someone saw 9 bodies on the floor beside Abalak that she went to get help first. Then, the first two detectives also died the same way, but then they ran out of wine, and the third detective decided it was poisoned. They found the packet from which the poison came from. Even though it yielded no clues, I can't believe I- I mean, the murderer could have been so careless.

As Aquis was still unready to rule, I stepped up as Regent, and quickened the pace of my tutoring.

Ten days later, as if to console the nation for the death of its king (completely unnecessary, everyone hated Abalak), Morocco invites us into a royal marriage, which we accept.

On August 1st, the first revolt in Azerbajdzan comes, with 6000 men. I leave the infantry of my army in Kurgan, under the command of one Colonel Anaba, and take my cavalry and Aquis (to continue tutoring him, of course) to the unruly province.

Amidst the travel, I give order to offer a royal marriage with Turkey, which the Sultan courteously agrees too.

September-December
September 4th. I cross a ridge, and see the smoke coming from the city of Baku. We have arrived at the siege. I give word to my contingent, and battle plans are made. We shall circle around the rebels, trapping them in between the city's defenses and our swords. This plan is executed, and the rebels are utterly destroyed, all six thousand of them.

I decide it would be a good idea to stay in Baku for a while, in case of any other uprisings. Meanwhile, I will continue my tutoring of Aquis. The seeds of a great Khan are inside him, and they are beginning to bloom....

On October 1st, encouraged by our recent dynastic success with Turkey, I offer the exchange of maps between us [104:13]. On the 6th request, the Sultan grew tired of our ambassador's nagging, and accepted the trade. We know have knowledge of Eire, Oman, Aden, Scotland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Nubia, Ethiopia, the Hedjaz, and more of Persia. Much of the civilized world has been mapped in this fashion, and now our map target is either Spain or England. It is rumored they know of a "new world" to the west. Perhaps we can expand there bloodlessly.... actually never mind. Conquest is better.

November 29 is a great leap forward for our Empire. Our first warship, the Lead Weight, is finally built in our port in Sochi. Now we can finally beat back any possible seaborne invadors (if the the enemy fleet consists of 3 transports manned entirely by three-footed frogs and commanded by four squabbling beavers with bad eyesight  )!

1499
January-December
In February, an interesting development from Europe. In a continous war of Italy, no real events have transpired, until Mantua was captured from Venice by Milan's army. Days later, the capital and only city of Milan was captured by Venice. I don't see how an army could completely neglect their heartland so badly. It looks dismal for Milan....

It indeed is. A week later, Milan accepts peace with Venice and her Serbian allies for the princely sum of 153 ducats.... much more than most Siberians will ever make in a lifetime.

On April 3rd, we send an ambassador to the far-off land of England, who probably does not know of our existance, offering an exchange of maps. This is favorable for them, for we know nearly twice as much as they do about the Middle East and Russia. They realize this, and are pleased to share with us. We then learn about Iceland, the Iroquois, and a Nova Scotian nation called Vinland. We then turn our cartographic sights on Spain and Portugal.....

Not costing money or diplomats, we then send cartographers to Spain. Again a favorable trade, which they accept the second time through. We do the same to Portugal, and they too accept. Now we know about much of the know world, something not expected by many people at the time of my arrival in the court of then-Ibaq Khan..... ahhhh.... good times..........

June 1st brings a revolt of 3000 people who apparantly hate maps. They attack us with burning copies of the maps from Spain, which just catch on the tops of our pikes and makes them burn as well as poke. Using this to our advantage, we destroy the revolt in days.

Later in June, my inner cartographer takes holld again and I offer to swap maps with Vinland, giving them knowledge of Europe and me knowledge of a land we decide to call Furrica because of the mass quantities of furs traded between the Vinlanders and the native Furricans.

In mid-October, another massive war breaks out in Europe. The might of the French war machine goes bonkers on Genoa, bringing the full might of France, Helvetia, Lorraine, The Papacy, Brittany, and Savoy down on Genoa and her only reliable ally, the Knights of Rhodes. It looks like the end of them to me...

On November 5th, I order the conscription of 3000 infantry to form an infantry division of our southern army. The revolts seem to have dried up, but one can never be too careful.

The rest of the year was quiet, until that fateful day. January 1st, 1500. When the prince was ready to rule.....

Well, I *was* going to nominate this as the Best Scene in an AAR, until I read this:

Hehehe, ignore pjcrowe, Morpheus. You are doing great getting all those maps. I never knew that if you tried enough, they would give them to you. And your navy has to start somewhere:D

*Edit* didn't see that post. ;)

Yeah, you don't have to wait to try again so you can just go "click enter enter click enter enter click enter enter click enter enter" until they get tired of you and accept. One time it took so long (think it was with crimea, but not sure) they accepted 3 times before I noticed, I was click enter enter-ing so fast:eek: .

But I really do like randomness. I'm going to try to incorporate more of it in the future when I can.  :D :p

Live and learn; gotta admit, I never thought to try that multiclick trick. Where your relations in the positives? That's what I've worked for, since "if negative then no" seemed programmed in (although I did get Georgia to agree to a royal marriage while relations were still negative:D )

And I nominate Morpheus for the title of Yoghurt the Younger.

1500
January-July
Aguis has come of age. My regency is done, and he takes control.

His first true action as Khan is to ride to Kurgan to take command of the Army there. Before he leaves, he regives the promotion to General that I refused from Abalak, which I humbly accept this time around. It is an honor from such an obviouslly skilled Khan.

In early February, he decides that his brother shall not be forgotten. Since he has an adventurous spirit, he is given the title of Admiral Qasim the Explorer, and given command of our fleet, which has been expanded to 4 ships by a gift from Crimea.

To help our fleet, we divert more of our budget to naval research.

On April 1st, the province of Georgia rises up and takes over itself in rebellion. Since I am closest, I take my army, now reinforced with the infantry that had been training for battle, southwest to the wayward citizens. This revolt shall be a short-lived one...

It is indeed, for it is put down a month after its beginnings. Unfortunately, the scum retreated to the castle, and a siege was necessary to break them out.

After a short time, because of my knowledge of the battlements (having commanded an identical siege a year before), I order an assault. The city falls, and the same day, we hear that the capital of Genoa has fallen to the French and their pig-dogs of allies. Once having been a minor nation ourselves (technically still being one), our hearts go out to the embattled kingdom. Only the Island of Corsica can save them now...

In celebration of the reconquest of the rebels, my cartographical instincts take hold again. This time we trade maps with the Iroquois, a loose confederation of Native Furricans near Vinland. They give us knowlegde of an area they call ... um ... I believe it was the Leat Grakes. Must be a native word ...

I then feel it is time to weed out the unfaithful in the Alliance. Aguis agrees wholeheartedly, and we set to conscription in Orenberg, Kurgan, Irgiz, and Astrakhan while we bring our respective armies to the provinces in question. We also convert some of the captured rebels into colonvicts and send them on their way to Alga. The Khan feels that it should be expanded and fortified in case of agression on the part of the Uzbeks.

On July 26th, the conscription process is completed and renewed. Three days later, our colony in Alga is expanded by another hundred colonvicts. Our economy is nearly broken, and we hope it will survive long enough for the coming war.

By the way, I have neglected to tell you where we shall strike next. Our old neighbors, the Golden Horde, are far too peaceful for a steppe clan. We will show them the value of combat, and maybe gain some lands in the process...

August-December
On the 6th we approach the Khan of the Uzbeks with our maps. We believe our dynastic allies should know of all we do, and vice versa. Muhammad Shaibani is quick to accept, and the trade is made. Ah, if only the borders of the Steppe nations encompassed Europe as well as the steppes....

1501
January-July
After years of conflict over the province, late in February, Turkey completed her siege of Bessarabia. After countless losses, the Turkish army of 8000 soldiers decides to stay and recuperate while another army is rumored to besiege Podolia.

June 1st brings another revolt in Azerbajdzan. It is four thousand men strong, but mostly infantry and not enough to perform a proper siege. Instead of diverting a large army to the city, the Khan and I decide to recruit 3000 cavalry in Georgia to take care of the problem. Meanwhile, we prepare for another August War of the Steppes...

August
Another rebellion breaks out on the 1st, but it is too late to worry about that. The wheels of war are moving.

The Horde War 8/17/01-5/13/02
War is declared on the 17th. All our allies, regretably, rally to our cause. I had hoped to use the dishonor of my allies to take command of the current Alliance. Alas. I may simply have to leave it and take command of another alliance...

Aguis Khan takes his men north to Volgograd, and I charge towards Uralsk.

At the advent of the war, Kazanian forces march on the northernmost province of the Golden Horde. When they arrive, they take on the 40K army stationed there, winning the battle but with only 5000 men left standing. Meanwhile the Khan and I laid siege to Volgograd and Uralsk. Crimean forces had been sent to Kujbyschew (sp?) and Volgograd, while a 12000 strong force headed for Sochi to break the rebel siege there.

On September 17th, assaults were enacted in Volgograd and Uralsk, both failing to kill all defenders, but reducing the ranks greatly.

On October 8th, Genoa finally paid off France. 146d was the price of peace, but as the Franks' Savoyard allies were on the verge of capturing Corsica, a wise decision from the Genoan king.

20 days later, the war takes a turn for the worst. Small recruit armies attack our battle weary soldiers, completely routing my army despite 3 to 1 odds. While this is happening, a Horde army of 12000 men defeats a Kazan defense force and lays siege to Tambow. If only Russia would bring her power to bear...

On November 15th, my men returned to Uralsk and almost immediately the city surrendered when faced with proof of our grim determination to conquer. We then set off to Samara, but before we were able to cross the border, a 15K regiment stopped us. In punishment, the Golden Horders were completely destroyed, and we continued on our way to Samara.

1502
January-July
Suddenly, on New Year's day, Sochi once again rebels. Now an army of 15000 attacks the city. Well, our campaign is first priority now. We will deal with the revolt later.

January 7th sees the fall of Samara. I divert my division to Volgograd to help quicken the capital's demise. The other two provinces of the Horde, Kujbyschew and Saratow, are under attack by Kazan and Russia, respectively, and I aim for complete annexation of the Horde.

Near the end of January, Volgograd fell, and my men marched to Kujbyschew and Aguis Khan went to Saratow. Although we wish for these to be captured by the nations already besieging them, we feel the need to quicken the sieges up; they are too slow-paced for the Khan's liking.

Kujbyschew falls on February 13th. I struggle to catch up with the Khan's army, but succeed long enough to tell him the news. Then his men pull ahead again.

On March 1st, our chief general in charge of research gives me the news that we have been able to successfully duplicate a Russian cannon that was studied during the siege of Kujbyschew [landtech 3-field artillery]. Now we are capable of mass-producing them, if we could afford it.

The next day, Aguis Khan's veterans arrived in Saratow, taking command of the siege from the inefficient Russian general. Some days after, my reinforcements arrive, with Crimeans, Kazanners, and more Russians on the way. The siege of Kazanner Tambow is still underway, but attrition has whittled the Horde army down to a mere shell of its former self.

On May 13th, 1502, one week after the fall of the last Horde city, the Golden Horde became part of our realm. Before the annexation, however, Kazan was able to drag off the entirety of the Horde's treasury, a grand sum of 163 gold pieces.

Screenie5.txt

As we survey the chaos that is our new territory, we notice something. There is now but one plume of smoke rising from the horizon. The sieges of Sochi and Georgia are over. As a Crimean general informed us, in return for the friendship and assisstance we have given him and his nation over the years, the Crimean Khan, Menghli Giray, helped us by wiping out the dissenters in those two provinces. Since there were but three thousand rebels in Azerbadjzan, he let that province alone, but destroyed 15K and 13K rebellions with only nineteen thousand men of his own. Our friendship is now even deeper cemented...

One downside of our new conquests is that it brings us into contact with Poland. Poland is a nation that managed to turn back the Turk. Several times. If the Poles wished, they could end up destroying all I--and Mamuk Khan--had worked for. We must concentrate on building a firmer relationship with Russia. At the moment, a Sibir-Poland war would mean certain defeat for us unless Russia stepped in. Although, now, we surpass Russia in territory.... NO! I cannot think of attacking our most powerful ally. Not until our armies surpass all of Europe....

August-December
August 9th: Turkey is beaten. After countless victories against the Mameluks, Naples, Venice, and Savoy, Poland has beaten them. Turkey pays up 153d for peace, as Turkish armies have been bested in the field many times by Polish leaders, and wish no more humiliation. This is truly a frightening day for all neighbors of Poland. If Turkey is beaten... who will stand against Poland?

By October 6th, all rebellions have been stamped out. The inherited Horde soldiers, after watching the old Hordelands, are brought down to Georgia to reinforce the sorely tired and weak army of Sibir. If we can stay out of war long enough to recover our economy, we will do fine.

As the year draws to a close, I sit back and look at the past decade.... We have accomplished so much. In just ten years, we have conquered three independent states, tripling our territory, which now exceeds that of all our neighbors except for Turkey and Persia. We have carved a swath of Sibir through the heart of the Steppes. We have gained a port, and a fleet of 5 warships under a brilliant admiral, Qasim. We have had two brilliant Khans, and one not so brilliant whose inept rule was cut short by a -- ahem -- unkown assassin -- hem--ahem -- before it could do any damage to the nation. The army was trained and increased from a group of deaf old men with arthritic wrists to a force that was the equal of any on the steppes, even if it was much depleted in the last war. We have succeeded, nay, prospered, in inhospitable conditions and created a true Empire of the Steppes.

The Years of Rebellion

1503
January-December
This shall be a period of regrowth and rebuilding. The Khan hungers for conquest, as do I, but the nations of Europe consider us barbaric and bloodthirsty [BB-28], and if we were to make war on anyone, they would surely come after us. Besides, our army has been decimated by the Tartar lands' attrition, and it needs rebuilding.

Unfortunately, our peaceful attitude shall not stay for long. Astrakhan revolts on February 1st, with a peasant force of 42,000! That is three times the size of the entire army... we will wait for winter to do its work before striking.

We begin army construction in the trapped-in southern tendril of our territory, raising a total of 6000 infantry in Georgia, Sochi, and Azerbadjzan.

Armies are finished training on April 12th, and an additional 4000/1000 are begun being conscripted. Our forces now outnumber the 19000 rebels (attrition of the steppes is murder!), but we want to be sure we can beat them.

Soon after Aguis and I leave Georgia, on June 1st, it rises in revolt. We immediately turn around to combat this threat. Damn nationalism...

In early August, Azer. rises in open rebellion. We turn back around from the battlefield littered with dead rebels to just to duplicate it miles away on the 12th.

We then resume our original trek to Astrakhan, as the fortress there is rumored to be within months of surrenderring, and the rebel forces are not dying off in the droves they were before.

Alas, it is too late. Astrakhan falls before we even cross the Volga River. Hopefully we can arrive and take it back before Astrakhan redeclares independence from us....

We assault the rebel fortress in early November, and re-take the province in 4 days.
Aguis dearly hopes that we can avoid any other revolts until our economy and army are rebuilt.

To combat the unhappiness of the peasantry, the Khan orders all funding not going to the treasury into improving the nation's stability.

Late in the same month, we find more reason to pity Genoa. Savoy, Helvetia, and Brittany, who have been besieging the Genoese capitol for some time it seems, have finally succeeded in capturing the city. It proves to be a repeat of the French occupation, as Genoa pays up 166d to the Savoyards, and they head back home, although their allies stay in Genoa.

December 1st is another uneasy day in Sochi. A group of several hundred men get drunk and start a riot, which catches up 14,000 other citizens along the way. Upon hearing this new, camp is stricken, and the army of Sibir marches to Sochi to deal with it, a task they complete on March 5th after nearly a month long battle.

1504
On April 20, 1504, many faraway nations leap into a state of war as England, supported by Portugal, is attacked by France, whose allies of Brittany, Savoy, and the Papal States rally to their cause.

On October 1st, Georgia revolts yet again. Angered beyond belief at this new wave of discontent, Aguis orders all income to be poured into appeasing the nobles and peasants of the kingdom. This is deemed a good policy by the nobles for some reason, and they invest more into the Infrastructure Council and the newly-formed Mercantile Commitee. This makes the peasants much happier, and stability rises. Also, the undivided attention our economy has given them makes them even happier, and the revolt risk goes down again.

1505
By the end of the 1504, although much of the Georgian countryside burns, the revolts are put down, and our economy begins to boom again. In celebration, Aguis Khan orders the Mercantile Committee to send agents to Venice, Thrace, Moscow, Alexandria, Isfahan, and Danzig.

Alas, our peaceful period is short. In June, the formar Tartar capital in Volgograd becomes the unexpected site of a nine thousand man rebellion. The army once again is on the move. Oh, when will it end? [no, really, when will it end? how long does nationalism last?]

On May 26, the rebellion is put down in Volgograd. The Mercantile Committee also sends another vendor to Isfahan to sell models of the Lead Weight, complete with sinking action, to the Persian children.

Now, although the rebellions are few and far between, they do pop up now and then, and often in the most unwanted places. This time, August starts with a revolt in Saratow that comes from within the city instead of the suburbs and takes control of the province siegelessly. This means that not only will we have to move even further north, we will probably spend the winter huddled outside of a city controlled by rebel scum... a most unfortunate event...

In late August, we hear that the Anglo-French War is going smoothly for England. It seems that the Britons have won a decisive victory over the Bretons, and not wanting to take over our title of Bad Boy Of Eurasia, sues for peace for Morbihan, Armor, and the whole treasury of 153d, thus separating France from its peninsular vassal.

On September 9, the Horde defeats the puny rebel force and lays siege to the weary city of Saratov.

On October 1, another inconvenient rebellion occurs, again in Georgia. As it is small, we will let it go until Saratow is recaptured... these revolts, they are very disruptive, evident by the fact that in this latest revolt, many of the members of the Mercantile committee were killed, slowing down trade research by half [unhappiness among merchants- half trade research gone].

Winter in Saratow is hard, and therefore a quick assault is ordered on November 2. The city falls, and the army is diverted towards the warmer climes of Georgia.

1506
On the 17th of February, the Georgian rebels are cut down in only 1 day of fighting, and the nation returns to a well-deserved peace.

In expectations of more peace to come, the Khan decides to spend a large sum of money to build another warship for his brother's fleet. Sibir will never be a naval power, I fear, but our fleet is bigger than that of such nations as Burgundy, so it isn't as bad as it could be.

September 1- Orenberg- Another revolt strikes, pitifully small (only two thousand peasants), but it still manages to take immediate control of the fortifications in the former Astrakhani city.

It soon becomes apparant why the city was taken so quickly by rebels... the defenders are cowards. They are all executed and replaced by soldiers from the army. We will have no cowardice among our ranks!

At the start of December, Kujbyschew rises against the rule of Aguis Khan, and the army is once again on the move, minus the soldiers staying in the city.

The rebels are all killed on the 20th, but on February 1st, 7,000 more rebels rise up against our army and are defeated within a day.

Rebellion seems to be in the air this year. On April 1st, Kubyschew, Saratow, and Georgia all rise in revolt, with the first somehow claiming control of the city.

By September 5th, all rebels are accounted for, and the jails are nearing capacity... perhaps it is time Aguis followed his father's stategy and trained a few colonvicts...

With November 1st comes another Saratowan revolt. As the Horde heads thataways, I order the conscription of infantry in Sochi, Azerbajdzan, Georgia, and Astrakhan to form a new army for the south lands of the Empire. One army, trekking about every few months, is a very costly venture....

But then, on December 1st, another disaster strikes and disrupts all our plans. Astrakhan once again rebels, but this time, it is larger force than ever seen by our army. 52,000 rebels besiege the city. We are forced to stop our travelling because our army would surely be annihilated by such numerical superiority. We must wait 'till winter's attrition takes its toll on the ill-equipped mob...
