((An incredibly close vote, and one decided by a single vote. That closeness is going to greatly affect the results.

Ruler of Hispania: Crown Prince Ferran

Now for me to do the roll to determine whether Pere is actually alive or dead, and then on to the update. I'll be honest, my motivation is pretty low today, partly because there are other things I'd rather be doing. *cough* Zelda *cough* I was originally going to write up a massive IC post detailing the meeting of Joan and Ferran, but I don't really have it in me today. Also, seeing as whatever I wrote would technically be private, it might bias people in loyalty towards one or the other. Might be better to let everyone know the gist of what happened without the details so you can form your own opinion at first. I'll explain a bit more about what I mean after the update.))

1835 - The Fate of the Crown

Crown Prince Ferran's procession towards the capital drew much attention, including that of Regent Joan. As the Crown Prince came within a day's ride of the city, Joan left the city with a small retinue to intercept his path. No one witnessed the meeting between the two out of sight of the city, but the procession disappeared for a few days, rumours spreading that the Regent had kidnapped the Crown Prince. These were dispelled shortly after when the procession came within sight of the city once more and marched through the north gate with Joan and his men accompanying them. A crowd gathered, following them to the palace, where the Regent escorted the Crown Prince into the palace. Those gathered outside the palace waited impatiently as minutes stretched into hours. Eventually as the sun began to set, Joan and Ferran exited the palace to address the crowd.

Ferran stepped forward first, his face flushed and covered in sweat despite the cool evening air. He fidgeted a bit before speaking, and when he finally did his voice cracked and he had to stop to regain his composure. Much like his father, Ferran was not accustomed or comfortable with addressing a large group of people. The situation, however necessitated it. The people needed to know the truth. What was the fate of their Emperor?

After another lengthy moment of silence, Ferran cleared his throat and addressed the crowd again. "People of Hispania, I have come before you today first because of a tragedy and then because of rumours regarding my father. The loss of my beloved mother and the circumstances of her death are a tough burden to bear, but the rumours surrounding my father necessitate my return to court. Many of you believe my father, the Emperor, to be dead, partially due to the word's of my late mother."

Ferran paused a moment, licking his lips nervously. He glanced at Joan, who nodded for him to continue. "I'm afraid that my mother was mistaken, and it pains me that such a fallacy led to her death. My father is alive, if not well. The Emperor lives."

Murmurs spread throughout the crowd as the people took in this announcement. The Crown Prince had confirmed what they had all doubted, that the Emperor yet lived. It seemed a miracle that the man somehow remained in a coma all these years.

Ferran nervously played with the hem of his shirt. He glanced again at Joan, who was watching the crowd's reaction with great interest. The Crown Prince took in a deep breath, shaking visibly, as he said, "However, I must also tell you...."

Joan's gaze snapped to the Crown Prince and he sidled over and grabbed him by the arm. A slight tug pulled Ferran back a step or two, allowing the Regent to step out in front of him. With smug calmness, Joan said, "I'm afraid that will be all. This whole affair has taken a great toll on His Highness, and he has suffered enough for today." The Regent strutted forward, a figure of power and overwhelming strength in his military attire, a cold glare directed at the crowd. "Because of your petty rumours and lies, the Crown Prince has not only lost his mother, but was forced to witness his father's condition yet again. Let His Highness grieve in peace instead of using him as an intermediary to answer your questions. Perhaps now you all will know better than to doubt the Crown."

Dramatically turning on his heels, Joan locked his arm in Ferran's and escorted the Crown Prince back into the palace, practically dragging him along at one point. Ferran's head remained turned down, refusing to look at anyone as he was led away. Members of the Guàrdia Real ushered the crowd away from the palace, forcing them disperse. They had received their answer, even if it was not the one they may have expected. Yet no one felt satisfied with the answer, as though something was out of place. Was the Crown Prince's reaction one of genuine distress at his mother's death and father's condition, or was he worried about something else entirely? What had he been trying to say before Joan interrupted? Perhaps the Crown Prince's word was not enough. Answers would need to be found by someone else, or else action would have to be taken.

((Due to the closeness of the vote, I decided to leave the outcome somewhat ambiguous. At first sight, it appears that the status quo is maintained, but there may be more beneath the surface. Fire mentioned a few days ago that this whole conflict would be good IC material, and I agree. I avoided it during the gap years because I needed to keep things fairly linear to speed things along, but that's not necessary anymore. Now that I'm moving onto the conversion, I think we'll have a little IC event so everyone has something to do. Basically you can create characters or use your existing ones and write up IC reacting to recent events. From there you can choose to do what you want, perhaps trying to figure out what is really going on. You could even try to stir up some chaos or maintain order. The scope will have to be somewhat limited though, since it cannot impact the conversion, so no revolutions, mass rebellions, full-scale civil wars, etc. Ideally, any conflict should be contained within Valencia and the surrounding area. So if you want to IC anything, go ahead. If it will have any impact on the main event or is related to the royal family or anything major, I'll have to do a RNG roll. So if you wanted to speak to the Crown Prince or even assassinate someone, I'd have to do a roll for you. I know this is pretty loose in definition, but I wanted to give you guys something to do since I expect conversion to take some time due to my limited knowledge of Vicky 2 modding and other distractions (so many good video games in March...). If you have any questions or perhaps suggestions for how to best handle this, speak up. Admittedly, I'm not entirely sure if this is the best way to do things, but we shall see.))

The past fifteen years were active ones for Field Marshal Maximiliao Dias, who was promoted after his bloody campaign against Najd. He was a diligent and loyal follower of the good Regent Joan, serving him faithfully. But some didn't particularly like this, calling him the "Butcher of Arabia" as a result of the great loss of life in the extended guerilla war against the Muslim.

The speech the two royals had before the people concerned Dias. What did the Crown Prince want to say? Loose ends could be dangerous if not dealt with. Dias mentioned his concerns to the Regent, asking if there was anything he needed to do to prevent a riot in Valencia.

((A discussion with people in the chat has brought to attention that I should clarify what has happened to the Cabinet and other important positions. If your character was in the army or navy before the gap years, they are still there. @Mach Twelve's character is Field Marshal now due to his loyalty to our Regent. As for the Cabinet, seeing as it needs to take on a different form going into Vicky 2, consider it very centralized. All positions are either filled by Joan or by one of his Imperial cronies, and even then they're more advisory now. I'll keep it simplified by using the revised positions for Vicky 2, so we only have a PM, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of the Interior, Minister of War, Minister of Finance, Minister of Education, and Chamberlain. The Minister of Colonial Affairs, Minister of Justice, Minister of the Navy, and Minister of Trade have all been absorbed into the more dominant positions. The Minister of Religion no longer exists, while the Speaker will not exist until the Assembly is brought back. I will be filling most positions with AI, although players may claim them as long as they're loyal to Joan (aka Imperial or Reformist). Joan is his own Minister of War and PM. Seeing as @texasjoshua was Chamberlain before the gap years and an Imperial, he can keep that position. Seeing as @LostPatriot was also an Imperial and diplomat, he may claim Minister of Foreign Affairs if he wants.))

I have found that the people need little to stir up doubts and question the Crown. The Crown Prince's performance was not all that reassuring, but he has much on his plate these days. I shall be keeping an eye on him myself to ensure he does not accidentally cause any more trouble. Now, if the people decide to the doubt the truth yet again and choose to question the Crown with force, we must be prepared. The Exercit Valencia already patrols the city. Order must and will be maintained. Keep an eye out for trouble, and squash it before it escalates further.

Fernando de Leon made preparations for the worst. He sent his family, guarded by his most trusted friends and relatives, out to France. His daughter and her children were kept in Leon, guarded by his most trusted soldiers. He had spent the last few years turning his estate and the city around it into an impenetrable fortress, as he had predicted things would come to this. He couldn't stop Ferran from confronting Joan on his own, though. That was one thing he didn't plan for.

With Ferran's status unknown, Fernando decided to act quickly before somebody got hurt. It sort of helped that he had ties to both Joan and Ferran...

((Private - Joan))

I am glad that things have worked out in your favor and that the Emperor is still alive. I remember my debt to you for testifying on my behalf in the trial, and I am prepared to repay it in full. My troops are at your service, ready to maintain order in the capital at your request. If you need anything to attend to personally, I can provide security and be a witness if need be. However, I am curious...what was it the Prince meant to say? I apologize if that was an inappropriate question.

((Also trying to make contact with Ferran))

That may be for the best. But others may be willing to corner and question the Crown Prince about his reluctance. We do not want another Jeanne so soon after we resolved her suicide. Even a lie would be dangerous

I would like to request to have some of my men trail anyone who requests to meet the Crown Prince or attempt to meet with him in secret. And detain them if possible. But they will not do so unless there will be no trail back to us.

Also, I will have the Commander of the Exercit on high alert for any trouble. Hopefully it will be an unneeded measure.

((Requesting a imprisonment and an investigation roll on anyone going to meet the Prince. Deliberately low risk/reward for the imprisonment.))

Altair had not worn the transition years well, his initial doubts of Joan quickly faded away when the assassination attempt, brought about by Northern Italians no less! injured Pere. Seeing Joan's strong hand as regent and in his time working with him Altair had grown to trust Joan, and moved further and further away from his attempts to compromise with the left. Over the years of the regency Altair had grown increasingly paranoid of his previous friends and connections within the assembly. The coup attempt verified all of Altair's worse fears. Scandalized by the association of so many not only in the Assembly but in the Cortz, Altair was one of the strongest supporters in favor of the changes to the Cortz, despite his lack of a guaranteed position himself. An assassination attempt on him by northern Italian secessionists caused him to stop his frequent open houses in Cremona, and move nearly permanently to Valencia. Tow bodyguards, whom he felt unnecessary before, accompany him everywhere, symbolic of his own Paranoia and concern for the ever darkening situation.

While the trade industry had suffered during the gap years, Altair had begun making investments in railroads and factories, making himself a small fortune, beyond his already considerable wealth, using the funding from the investments Altair established a press in Valencia, which continuously produced pro-regency propaganda. Upon witnessing Ferran speak, the press whirred into action, a draft written by Altair himself was edited and sent out into Hispania, particularly Italy. Altair would do his best to spread far and wide the news that Pere was still alive, if not well. It had become clearer by the day to Altair that compromise would not work. A strong monarch was needed for Hispania to survive, and Joan had served Hispania loyally, he was what Hispania needed.

((Private- Joan))

I have breathed a small sigh of relief after the events of yesterday. While not as reassuring as could be desired Prince Ferran's speech will hopefully stabilize things for now. As always I will be keeping alert for any sign of rebellion here in Valencia, but I am certainly happy to provide assistance in any way I can. Hispania needs it's regent. I say this not as any sort of flattery, as you well know, but as a statement of fact. The road ahead will not be any easier than the road behind us, and you need no reminder that stability in the public eye is of the utmost importance. Please let me know if you would like any statements other than those given yesterday published through my press, I myself have contributed with a steady word, and admittedly Ferran's answer sounds much better in print, but a response from yourself would not go amiss. For Hispania,

Altair Spoleto.

Henri Maxime de Saint-Pierre was outraged when actions of few decided the fate of so many, and he couldn’t help but to put blame onto his younger brother, at least partially. Henri kept fighting for the rights of the commoners, however keeping it reasonable, not wanting to end up being a "traitor to the country". Unlike Aurèle who didn't care for the good name of the family, which took centuries to build up.
But when the Crown Prince came to Valencia is was a sign of hope, hope for a change, hope for things to return to how they were.
With the current state of things he'd have to tread lightly, try to get on the Regent's good side before taking any steps further.
And if that meant giving away a member of his family then so be it.

(( Private - Regent Joan ))

I must say that I'm relieved to hear the Emperor is alive, even if he isn't in the best state. While I am not... Pleased with how things turned out, I fully understand why you took such drastic measures, and despite everything I still voice my support for you.
However I'm afraid that not all filth has been purged, and I am ashamed to say that my own blood, my brother is one of them.
I do not know if you heard about them, but in the underground of Hispania there is a group who call themselves "Vox Populi" - The voice of the people. They wish to eliminate the monarchy, get rid of the nobles.
As a faithful servant of the Empire I cannot stand for that!
That is why I wish to give away my brother Aurèle to you. Hopefully capturing him will be the first step to destroying those radicals and traitors.

((Private - zenphoenix))

Your troops are the Crown's troops. They shall do as they have always been tasked to do: maintain order and defend Hispania from its enemies. The Exercit Valencia will be more than sufficient to monitor the capital. I suspect things will calm down eventually when people finally stop treating recent rumours as truth despite evidence against that.

The Crown Prince has faced great hardship as of late, and the burden of both his mother's loss and father's condition took its toll. Having to speak before a crowd, especially so soon after seeing his father, left him more emotionally fragile than usual. He was about to lose his composure in public, something unbecoming of a man of his station. I felt it better to usher him to somewhere private before he broke down in front of everyone.

- Regent Joan de Trastámara

((If you're trying to contact Ferran, I'll need to know how so I can properly determine the chances of success. If you are doing more than just trying to reach out to him, like send a message, I'll need that as well.

On another note, players don't need to feel restricted to whoever was their active character. While I don't want people leading a legion of characters, if you have established non-active characters or known associates of your active character, you can make use of them. I'm saying this now because you technically have the Princess Consort as one of them, so feel free to make use of her. Others can do the same with their own characters.))

((Private - Mach Twelve))

If you believe it necessary, keep an eye out for those attempting to contact the Crown Prince. During these unstable times, I fear there are those who wish to use him as a symbol to disrupt the regency. I do not believe it necessary to detain someone merely for trying to speak to the Crown Prince. He is not a prisoner here. If, however, it is clear someone wishes to use him for their own purposes, then feel free to intervene and keep them away from His Highness.

Spread word of the Crown Prince's words then to the far corners of the Empire. Keep the people informed of the Emperor's continued hold on life, and let them know that the Crown Prince has verified that he still lives. Too long have there been those who doubted the Emperor's fate, thinking me some tyrant holding onto power without cause. The Emperor is not well and I will rule for him as long as he lives, as dictated by our laws.

If you know of his whereabouts, or better yet where this Vox Populi can be found, I can have men sent to investigate and round up the traitors.

__________________________________________________

*Silvestre de Santigo stands before a relatively small gathering of slightly disheveled men. Some wear fine clothes, worn down with years underground, and others are dressed in little more than rags - sad memories of days long passed. They remain silent as they prepare to hear him speak, being careful not to draw unnecessary attention to their crowded room.*

"Gentlemen, for how long have we been forced by a cruel hand to hide under a cloak of shadows? By my count, it is no less than six whole months! Half of one year in which we have been made less than vermin, forced to crawl on the ground while a dark voice attempts to use a whole cast of marionettes to cajole and violate the Empire's fair citizens! Tell me, brothers, what has come of these dark days?

"Have we been protected?

"Have we been honored?

"Have the people been exalted?

"Nay! I say, our nation has fallen since the death of Alfons, and no doubt, without the leadership of the good men who built up his monarchy, we have had no bulwark against the ambitions of the cowardly, despicable sort who now lord themselves over the Empire! They have instead built a caste of tyrants, led by none other than the Black Regent himself, and to make firm their institution, they have destroyed the Assembly and made us strangers in our own home. No doubt, the Black Regent is working at this very moment to twist and corrupt Prince Ferran, and to use him as little more than a tool in his scandalous plot!

"Fear not, brothers, for soon the cock will crow! Soon we shall no longer be the last pieces of a bygone era, but the seeds of a new Empire. Soon we shall escape from the dark corners of this nation, and those who fight valiantly shall be exalted. The hour shall soon be upon us, for the Black Regent has violated the commandments of this Empire's people, and shall be done to precisely as the Lord threatened the Israelites - that he and his ilk shall be cast out of sight, and reduced to a byword among the people!

"With the grace of God, we shall see a new dawn cast over the Empire! Praised be his name, amen!"

I cannot tell where this Vox Populi resides. From the storied my brother has told me they never stay in the same place, always on the run, slowly gaining support and rotting the empire from within.
The last time I have heard from him, he was right here, in Valencia. Last time I heard from him, he said that they were planning something grand. I cannot help but to worry they had something to do with the coup.
That is why I recommend lunching an investigation into the matter, so we can root out a seed of evil. If you do not have objections I'd wish to take part, if not lead it.

Félix Villanova sat in his Valencian apartment, anxiously waiting for his son Antoine to arrive. Despite being a member of the Imperial Faction, Félix has been overly paranoid about the recent political purges and had voiced his belief over the Emperor's true condition once. He heard about the rumors of the Emperor's supposed death and watched the apparently strange manner the Crown Prince had denied the rumors. After a few nerve wracking hours the twenty one year old Villanova entered the room.

"Father, are the rumors true? That the Emperor lives, and that Prince Ferran is acting strangely?"

"...Yes son."

"Should we do something?"

"No, we won't, but you can at least request a generalship, brigadier is a respectable rank, but if you want to fulfill your wish about your grandfather, you must request it before you miss the chance."

"Of course, I'll get to that right away."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

((@Mach Twelve))
Dear Field Marshal Dias,

As you know, my grandfather is the disgraced Field Marshal Fausto. I wish to redeem the Villanova name in the military, and to do that,
I request to be promoted to a generalship.

Brigadier Antoine Villanova

Gregory Diego, Archbishop of Grenada, had been chosen with the intent of being a politically neutral and weak Archbishop by the other powers which had influence in the proceedings of Grenada. After the death of Archbishop Lagos, who had left no successor, they had gone through an interregnum of sorts for four years. During this period, outside agents gained great power in the proceedings of the Archbishopric of Grenada. They intended to keep it, so, after blocking the proceedings for quite a while, they had chosen one they had thought to be safe, Bishop Diego, a man known to be above-average, but not too above-average, who had little ambition in worldly matters, an easy man to placate.

How wrong had they been. Archbishop Diego spent the years rebuilding the power of the Archbishop, and slowly gained enough power and support to cause a silent coup in Grenada, overthrowing the private influences on the Archbishopric, and establishing the Archbishop as the supreme figure in the Archbishopric. Fortunately, the Church had been an easy way for the corrupt to keep control of the province, so once Diego wrestled the Church under his control, so too did much of the de facto power in Grenada fall. With this power base secure, Diego gradually grew his influence to the west, across the lands of the heathen kingdom of the area, so that nearly all Bishops in the three provinces knew his name.

Diego was not content, however, and in the summer of 1834, began his presence at court. By this time, the Assembly was gone, and that was fine with Diego. He was much better at the informal, personal relationships. And so he stepped onto the Hispanian stage, waiting for an opportunity. The Regent Joan was one such opportunity.

With the assurance of the Crown Prince, we can now rest any doubts, however small, on the legitimacy of your rule. However, there are some who would not see it so. Being one with some influence over the Church from Grenada to Gibraltar, I will assure the Bishops emphasize the importance of obedience to the ruler. Nonetheless, I fear the Crown is not taking full advantage of the power of Church of Jesus Christ. If an informal position were established at court, it would greater illuminate the great connection between faith and the Empire, as well as the immense legitimacy and righteousness conferred upon the ruler. Perhaps if the position of Court Chaplain were to be resumed, with the Chaplain selected upon your discretion.

Humbly,
The Archbishop of Grenada, Gregory Diego
((This would be a position which holds no in-game decision making, but is simply a way, IC, for Diego to ensure the survival of the influence of God...and the Archbishop of Grenada. I would think that this would, however, merit an increase in VP. ;)

On a side note, if we never get the Assembly back, all your work will go to waste. :( ))

((@DragonOfAtlantis, the Minister of War appoints generals, that being Joan, not the Field Marshal.))

((Private))

Fernando de Leon passes to Joan a letter written by Princess Maria Luisa de Trastamara (nee Leon), asking if she can see the prince or at least hear from him in some way.

((I'll write some more IC later this evening or over the weekend.))

((Private - zenphoenix))

Joan grants the request, for it would be unseemly to deny a wife access to her husband, especially when that man is the Crown Prince. He emphasizes that the Crown Prince has chosen to stay in the palace of his own volition, to help stabilize the regency during these troubled times. He expressed his gratitude though at Leon recognizing his authority over all comings and goings in the palace.

((Don't worry about pumping out quick replies or IC. I'll still have to do the conversion and reply to these messages after all.))

The position of Court Chaplain is an outdated position, one made obsolete by the creation of the Council of Churches and Ministry of Religious Affairs. Whenever one man was appointed to represent all Christians, inevitably the other sects complained. I find no reason to return to that system, and find it better to further the cooperative element of the Council of Churches in managing spiritual affairs and the Ministry of Religious Affairs in handling the more secular matters, albeit as a minor branch of the Ministry of the Interior. While a Minister of Religious Affairs has existed in the past, I have found it easier to allow the Minister of the Interior to handle such things. Placing a priest is such a position tends to lead to them putting the Church first, something better suited for members of the Council of Churches than the Cabinet. If you feel the Church is not utiliting its position properly, perhaps you should speak with the Council of Churches or Minister of the Interior.

- Regent Joan de Trastámara

((I purposely kept the Minister of Religious Affairs out of the Cabinet because it was a useless position that will do nothing in Vicky 2, not to mention it isn't as relevant in the 19th Century. I've basically merged the Ministry of Religious Affairs into the Interior one, while the Council of Churches is aimed at the spiritual affairs of the faith. I suppose I could make it an optional Cabinet position, but I'll leave that up to the players if they want to recreate the position.))

((Might be my fault. As a "semi-player" who only went to say hello during the gap years, I didn't expect my votes to interfere like this in the process. Sorry about that ;)))

((Not sure how I managed to screw that up. Let's try this again.))

As you know, my grandfather is the disgraced Field Marshal Fausto. I wish to redeem the Villanova name in the military, and to do that,
I request to be promoted to a generalship.
