Yes, a update that doesn't involve some sort of Pan-Asian victory! :D Good luck to Dr. Jones and Prof. Falken on their search for the tomb, I think they'll need it.

I for one welcome our new Pan-Asian overlords!

And of course the new updates.

Durhn may be down but he’s not out… out of his mind that is. It looks like he is going to have to travel to Arabia to find the ‘Nameless City’ where the sands of time have stopped. I have no doubt that as long as he doesn’t get sand in his eyes he’ll find the incantations he needs and then watch out world! Gunther Duhrn is back!

Good to see Skorzeny again.
He has hard task ahead himself.
That he has, but he wouldn't be the most dangerous man in Europe if he couldn't handle little things like this.

Very nice update.
Duhrn thinks he's finally (nearly) strong enough to be Führer himself?
I did update the pdf with the last few chapters.
BTW Shouldn't it be Wewelsburg, not Wevelsburg?
At least that's what the real castle is spelled like, and you also wrote this this in the beginning.
Duhrn is quite loyal to the Führer, it's just that he has a bruised ego right now. Thanks for the updating and you're right about the spelling, I have fixed that now. I had also forgot to make large the first letter in the last two posts, which is the correct formatting for this AAR.

Yep, because worklife currently permits it, but that might (and probably will) change soon.

Nice new adventures for Skorzeny, great!

Btw as most readers of this magnificent AAR are enormous Skorzeny-fans what's the correct spelling of his name?
I've seen both Skorzeny and Skorenzy...
Well, as the poll clearly showed, Skorzeny and Duhrn are the two most popular characters of this AAR, so I can't have them idling. They need to be doing their things...

A mission west of Kunming
Province of Yunnan, Pan-Asian Empire

April 23rd, 1940

nunkun660ci1.jpg

After James and Irene had been left in Kungming after being driven, drugged and blindfolded, from the Secret Stronghold by Fu Manchu’s Dacoits, Bond had left for Britain while she had taken refuge at a catholic mission in the foothills of the great mountains of Yunnan in which, the Vatican intelligence operative was fairly certain, the lair of Fu Manchu was hidden. Her credentials had impressed the French nuns running it enough that she had been taken in without question, and Irene now spent her days with long treks into the mountains under the guise of a nun with an interest in mountaineering. Sooner or later, she’d find some evidence of where the Secret Stronghold was located – and then the enemies of Fu Manchu would learn of it.

It was frustrating slow work though, and doubly so since she knew Fah Lo Suee could easily disclose the location if she saw fit to do so. But the uneasy alliance she had helped broker by connecting James Bond through Hannah Reitsch to Otto Skorzeny to Fah Lo Suee was a lopsided one. True, it had allowed James to regain control of his body and seemingly enter Fu Manchu’s service, knowing in advance that Fah Lo Suee would not brainwash him into a slave of the Lord of the Si-Fan, and as a double agent, he’d be able to pass on to him all sorts of false information. But the Lady of the Si-Fan had not agreed to the deal without first introducing all sorts of hypnotic blockings and fail-safes to make certain that Bond would always insure the secrecy of her involvement above all other considerations. He had become, for all practical purposes, her agent, rather than one for the Secret Service, and Fah Lo Suee had her own agenda. Very clearly, it involved the destruction of Fu Manchu, but it seemed more doubtful that the complete defeat of the Pan-Asian Empire or of the Si-Fan were on it too.

All this meant walking and more walking for Irene, but if nothing else, it was good for her health, so she didn’t complain. And she also had the mission’s forbidden short-wave receiver to keep her apprised of the events in the world. So every evening, the nuns would gather round the machine and hear the BBC or other western news from the war in America, the closer front in Siam and other matters in which the version relayed by the state-controlled Pan-Asian media could not be trusted.

And as before in Rome, the news brought a chill to the young nun; the Pan-Asian invasion forces pushed north, south and inland from their beachhead in San Francisco. Already it seemed that Los Angeles could not be held. For some reason, the Americans were trying to evacuate their population before the advance of the enemy troops, which so far were made up mainly by ethnic Japanese and Chinese infantry, and this caused them endless logistical troubles according to the BBC analysts. The wisdom of this was questioned, as the Pan-Asians had so far been entirely correct in their treatment of the occupied civilian population. There was some good news too. The aerial battle was still hotly contested and according to American propaganda, a joint German-American tank corps made up by the Wehrmacht’s 7th Panzer-Division and the US Army’s 1st (and only) Armoured Division under the joint command of Major-Generals Erwin Rommel and George S. Patton was being sent west to deal with the invaders.

As always, there were those two prophetic quatrains from the Voynich manuscript and Nostradamus to consider, those that the clairvoyants of the Paranormal Division had determined were about to be fulfilled:

In the City of God there will be a great thunder,
Two brothers torn apart by Chaos,
while the fortress endures, the great leader will succumb...
The third big war will begin when the big city is burning.

-The Voynich Manuscript (unknown author), 8th century AD

From the sky will come a great King of Terror.
To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols,
Before and after Mars to reign by good luck.

- Nostradamus 1554

If there was anything to be happy about regarding the Pan-Asian super-bomb that had destroyed the US Sixth Army headquarters and the bulk of the garrison of San Francisco, Irene thought, it was that it had happened in San Francisco and not Los Angeles, because how easily could not “The Angels” have been interpreted as the inhabitants of the City of God. But San Francisco… no. The thermobaric bomb had not been the “Great thunder in the city of God” – that was yet to happen. Of all the predictions of the Voynich text, only the last line had so far come true. And as for Nostradamus… well Mars reigned, all right. War engulfed the planet, and now everyone was but waiting for the titanic struggle between Germany and the USSR to begin. Today even, Yugoslavia had jumped on the German bandwagon, signing the Anti-Comintern pact. But the King of Terror was yet to come, and for that the renegade nun was nothing but grateful. She still had time.

Next morning she went for another walk in the mountains.

Oh yes.

Hmmm not to good it would seem in the USA, but maybe Rommel will help counter that.

Sorry I'm a little confused though, what is the Siam front?
The Pan-Asian Empire has declared war on and is invading Siam, in order to alleviate it's catastrophic resource situation.

I know what you mean... some updates are more work than pleasure, but I have to more or less try to tie up loose ends, can't leave characters haning in limbo forever. Also, I thought it was about time I clarified what the situation with Bond was, so now you know.

US Sixth Army HQ, Reno
Nevada, United States of America

April 27th, 1940

ju52dooryy4.jpg

Dropping from a sky lead-grey with overcast, the Junkers Ju 52 of the German Eagle Legion descended through the cold and crisp air of Nevada to touchdown softly, despite the roughness of the improvised landing strip, at the new Sixth Army headquarters just outside Reno. The corrugated steel plates making up the tri-motor’s fuselage were painted in USAAC olive with large five-pointed white stars on it’s flanks, covering the black “Balkenkreuz” insignia under the coat of paint. The Greater German Reich was not at war with the Pan-Asian Empire – every man and machine in the Eagle legion was clearly marked as belonging to the armed forces of the United States, even if the ground troops still carried their own uniforms, having substituted only their rank insignia for American ones.

The plane taxied to a stop next to the small hangar building still being constructed by Army Engineers. While a single jeep approached from the nearby command bunker, the side door opened and German troops in Feldgrau uniform wearing the distinctive Fallschirmjäger helmets began to climb out. First aground was a giant man in a black German pilot’s leather jacket and an officer’s cap sporting the Totekopf-insignia of the Waffen-SS, a Knight’s Cross at his neck and a large medieval-looking sword in sword-belt slung over his shoulder. He headed directly for the jeep.

‘Welcome to Nevada, Major Skorzeny!’ the American GI behind the steering wheel greeted him. ‘Did you have a pleasant journey?’

The huge Austrian shrugged. ‘We weren’t shot at, we got here and that’s about the best you could say about it, private’, he replied in heavily accented English. ‘So what happens now?’

‘General Fredendall is waiting for you, Sir.’

‘Better not let him then.’ The SS-man turned towards his men, shouting in German. ‘Shack up in the hangar and wait for me. Be ready to move within thirty minutes!’

Jawhol, Sturmbannführer!’ the heterogeneous group answered in chorus. There were quite a few “Herr” shouted between “Jawhol” and his rank – the Waffen-SS had banned that practice, but many of the men in the group were from the Wehrmacht’s elite special operations regiment, the Brandenburgers, others were Fallschirmjäger from Student’s 7th Flieger-Division. There was a core of veterans from Skorzeny’s own III Abteilung of the SS-Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler though, men who had been taught some basic moves of the art of Sinanju and who, thanks to long lessons with Master Lichtenauer, were as proficient with a long-sword as with a sub-machinegun. Many of them, in fact, carried the swords they had been equipped with before the disastrous Dreamland campaign.

The General had set up his command post in a newly constructed bunker, a massive affaire made of reinforced concrete deeply buried in ground. To Skorzeny it looked like it might withstand a full-scale barrage by an artillery regiment, and was generously protected by pillboxes and casemates bristling with machineguns and flak. Unfortunately, it was also located some two-hundred kilometres from the front. The more merciful interpretation of the motives behind it's construction would be foresight or even pessimism.

Lt General Lloyd Fredendall awaited Skorzeny at the entrance to the bunker. He was short, at least next to the Herculean Austrian, with a long thin face from which a long sharp nose protruded like a keel from the bottom of a ship. Skorzeny gave him a thoroughly sloppy salute and an as infuriatingly insolent grin as he could manage. The effect was not lost on the General.

fredendall.jpg

Lt Gen. Lloyd Fredendall replaced MacArthur
as commader Sixth Army

‘Why the hell do I have to put up with you and your lot of sausage-swillers, Major Skorzney? Can you tell me that?’

‘Why, it’s all in the interest of Germano-American friendship, General!’

Fredendall sighed and seemingly deflated. ‘Ah, to hell with it. I have orders from General Marshall to cooperate fully with you. And frankly, Major, if you want to go jump over Pan-Asian occupied territory and kill off some off the bastards for me, then you can be as insolent as you please. Come on in!’

The American General led his guest into the dark bowels of his bunker to his command post. It was a small, damp room, insufficiently lit by a few naked light-bulbs. A battery of radios and their operators were set against two of the walls and in the middle of the room, a large-scale map of the United States West Coast was laid out. Fredendall gestured towards it with a sigh, as if it should be evident to Skorzeny from the jumble of small wooden unit markers spread out over the table how desperate the situation was.

Skorzeny frowned. ‘Are things not going well then, General?’

Fredendall shook his head. ‘It feels strange disclosing these things to a German, we always figured you’d be the enemy, but what the hell; your flying boys in the Eagle Legion already get complete briefings, so… no, it’s not going well.’ He pointed to the southern part of the map.

‘The main body of the Pan-Asian 18th Field Army under Field Marshall Terauchi has advanced down the coast and is currently banging at the gates of Los Angeles. The city will be declared open tomorrow morning at 6 AM. On his left flank, Army Detachment Yamashita has advanced down the Sacramento valley and is expected to capture Fresno during tomorrow. We’re still holding Sacramento itself though.’

‘Sounds bad, General’, Skorzeny said, his frown deepening. ‘And here in the north...?’

‘We’re currently holding them at Fort Bragg on the coast, mainly because they’re not pushing very hard right now. Another Army Detachment is slowly pushing north in the Sacramento Valley towards Redding, but for now they’re not making much progress. As long as we hold Sacramento, they’ll not dare push to far north or south in the valley.’

‘So you have them tied down in middle at least?’ Skorzeny wondered.

‘For now. But I just got news of a whole Army, the 14th Mongolian Cavalry is being unloaded in San Francisco as we speak. With that, I’ll be too badly outnumbered to hold west of Sierra Nevada. If I had anything but walking boys and popguns, I’d attack in the middle before the situation gets worse – but I have no tanks, Patton’s outfit is not due here for quite a while yet… so what can you do?’

Fredendall opened his hands in a show of impotence and Skorzeny shrugged. The situation did look very difficult, but he was not impressed with the fighting spirit of this American.

‘But enough of this chitchat!’ Fredendall said. ‘What exactly are you and your men going to do?’

Skorzeny’s trademark grin, made lopsided by his schmiss scar, returned. ‘Tell me, General, have you seen any more use of thermobaric bombs recently?’
