Continued from here: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/empire-name-changes.977108/
Posting twice since I really want to know what the community feels about this and I felt like I posted this thread in the wrong place.

I've noticed that since 1.3 that when I change governments my empire name changes as well, this never happened in the older patches. I've also noticed that custom AI empires also has their name changed whenever they change their government to advance or get vassalized by another empire.

In the older patches, it was only randomly generated empires that get their name changed. This complaint is more of a minor pet peeve on my part as most of the new features of the patch are great. I personally hate having to change my empire name back to the original I've given it once I've changed my government type. For custom AI empires, I'll create the Imperium of Man for example, and once they change their government or get vassalized, they will rename themselves to the "Man Star Republic" or something like that.

Its rather annoying and I was wondering if there is a way to change this back to the old ways where only randomly generated empires are allowed to change their names.
Again, a minor peeve, but it's extremely annoying for role-playing reasons.

Yeah it seems 1.3.0 brought a lot of new & old bugs (at least I hope it's a bug..), I can't even get myself to play at the moment..

I'll even be down-voting Stellaris, for the time being, on Steam, because this is just extremely silly.

...And the best part is - if you play on other language - empire change name on part english-part localized. What bug ship prefix - and all new ships lost their names and types.
And if it will be scientist ship - it will broke every anomaliy exploring. Until you manually edit save to change ship prefix.

After that - simple empire name change is so... small problem...

I'm not sure if it's really a bug, it could well be just one of those things where a dev thought something is a good idea and changed it.

They removed the "sort by distance" button from the empire list screen, presumably because diplomacy stopped being as dependant on distances, but it was very useful for locating primitives inside your borders quickly and easily.

I think there should be an option to "lock" your empire name, so you can choose whether or not you want names to change when you change govs. Also the empire name randomization button is broken when creating an empire for some reason.

Sounds like a bug rather than a design choice then?

I guess I can kinda understand why they would put something like this in their game. But it seems like more of a bug than a design choice.

I really hope it isn't a design choice, that would make absolutely little logical sense & breaks immersion - if it's a feature, make it an option at least..

In the meantime, it seems that you can now rename your empire by clicking on the name in the "government" screen. (Or perhaps was it already there ? I clicked on there by mistake, perhaps a button like the CK2 one could indicate that you can in fact change the name ?)

As for the UI choices : maybe a pop-up proposing us to change the name if we change the governement (similar to the EU4 "new colonial country" pop-up).
For the other custom empire that are not played, that's indeed a problem for immersion :-/.

I quite like the fact the Empire names change with a change of Government or get vassalised... They do the same in other PDS games.

For example, I had a neighbour called the Republic of Beauty (don't ask... silly flower people...) and when they asked me to be their Protector, they changed to the Council of Beauty, obviously because they're no longer an independent republic...

Or am I misunderstanding the problem?

The system was always in the game. Just that it was only for randomly generated empires.
The problem is that there is a bug that does this for everyone. Both you and your custom ai empires.

For example, you want to play a game with your super cool Principality of Zeon and Neo-Soviet Empire and enable them ingame as AI.
But as the game goes on, both of them are renamed to "Human Combine" and "Human State".

For people like me, we get really antsy when our cool rival empires that we created get changed to something boring.

Noticed this as well, I only actually noticed because I play with galaxies mostly populated by my custom empires..

On the upside, though, custom empires now spawn with the system and homeworld names you made them with.

I like it aswell, it makes sense (if it didnt change the ship prefixes!) , I like the idea of having my empires name change automatically when I switch to an advanced government form, I did it already before manually by renaming my empire when I got the advanced government. Perhaps they should make it optional and have it default on? It would be even cooler to have it as an option in the empire creation screen and you could set the name to something specific for each advanced government/when vassalized.

I really hope it isn't a design choice, that would make absolutely little logical sense & breaks immersion - if it's a feature, make it an option at least..
IRL when governments change, usually the name of the nation changes aswell

soviet union ->russian federation
CSA ->United States
British Empire ->United Kingdom

So it makes alot of logical sense actually, if it were optional, or maybe it should prompt you "hey should your governments name change now?" or something and give you the option to "lock" names in the creation screen
