Well, this thread will be heading off-topic soon.:D

Curiously enough, many old-line WiF players hate the newest maps. Since I only started with the Final Edition, I think they're great!

ADG's site is useless-there's information on it that has been contradicted by the latest annual-and that's been out months!

Got no more idea about release date for computer WiF than you, but I hope the final release improves the unit graphics considerably-the handsome counters is one of the major pluses of the boardgame, as you said.

>That (Empires in Arms] was the boardgame that is THE single closest thing to EU.

Well, no, the EU boardgame is rather closer ...

I loved WiF 5th edition...played a lot back in the early '90's before computer gaming pretty much wiped board gaming out over here. Third Reich was OK back when it first came out,(John Prados designed it back in 1975-76.), but became dated quickly and it definitely was a game rather than a simulation. Empire in Arms was a good game but I never could understand why the grand campaign scenario started in 1805 rather than some earlier time frame. One thing about EA it certainly taught you the importance of firm alliances. (Just try to hold out as Austria without having help from at least 2 allies!)

Has anyone mentioned Empires of the Middle Ages in this tread? Alas, I never played Empire in Arms, but EMA has the same kind of scope, and kinds of mechanisms as EU. One thing that EMA had that might be useful in EU is that provinces had a language/culture and that monarchs could have "claims" on a province. This is very much like EU's CB shields, but a bit more sophisticated.

One of AH best games ever. I too has a copy stashed away. I would love to play it again, but it is next to impossible to get so many gamers in one place at the same time.
You find many old boardgamers in this forum by the way.

Being relatively new to EU, I would have to conclude that the developers of EU were inspired by this boardgame. It's too much similarities to be a coincidence.

No. EU(pc) is modelled and named after the actual boardgame "Europa Universalis". A french game created by Phillipe Thibault(?) at Azure Wish.

I don't have their internet adress. But their is a ok site at URL=http://perso.wanadoo.fr/vincent.chretien/]http://perso.wanadoo.fr/vincent.chretien/[/URL] You have to understand a little french though.

EMA?

State Machine,

That Middle Ages game sounds very interesting. As you know I like dynastic twists and the language/culture concept sounds great to me. I hope EU2 has that (plus my favorite addtions constitutional policy and class stratification, but that's covered elsewhere).

Do you have any idea where to get it?

Are there any fan sites? I like these grand strategy games!

Empires of the Middle Ages?????

I did't realise that there are actually two games along these lines - I thought he meant Empires of the Middle Sea. I have this game at home - it is quite good but a little simplistic.

Empire of the Middle Ages was an old SPI game - don't think you've much chance of finding it apart from second hand. There was a very old computer game based on Empires of the Middle Ages - haven't tried it but you can get it at http://www.theunderdogs.org/game.php?id=911

It is only 803 kB so don't expect much!

Should be, it was published one french and one englihs version with it seems slitghly changed rules. If you find it (i asume you would go for the english version), download imdeatly the updatet rules to say that the first english translation sucks would be to kind.

Great game though, even with the curse, "no complete game of EU the boardgame have ever been played". Or can someone dipsrove that statment?

Very true. I own a copy of the game. So do a few of my wargaming friends. We never even got to play it once!

Of course, EU (the board game), was clearly influenced by Empires in Arms.

This is exactly what my hunch was. When I first bought the EU computer game a couple weeks ago, I never knew that an EU board game existed. So my first thought was "my god this game feels like it took a lot of ideas from that ancient Avalon Hill game Empire in Arms!"
