Springtime for Rudolf
1576
Rudolf's coronation is a glorious event, he abjures his predecessor's follies, beginning by restoring the Ministry of War. The sins of Maximilian have left scars upon the army however, and in January our Italian army is defeated by a peasant rabble in Nice! Rudolf and his new Minister of War visit the troops and boost their morale by proclaiming that Habsburg military might shall once more terrorize the Protestant heathens of Europe. Thus inspired, the army returns to Nice in July, and the ungrateful swine are massacred to a man. Good news arrives in September, our spies inform us that Spain has been beset by civil war, we note that rebels have captured Spain's possessions in southern Italy. In November, more good news arrives from Iberia, Aragon has declared its independence from Spain!
1577
On April 21, the new nation of Aragon joins our military alliance and the Habsburg Council of War is called for the first time in 8 years. Regrettably, Aragon's coming to the alliance does not give us a CB on Spain, but the kaiser comes to agree with the plan of Tuscan annexation favored by the Minister of Roads and Bridges. I argue that Poland must be utterly crippled first, but I am overruled. An interesting presentation was given by a consultant calling himself Morpheus the Younger, who advised us on our problem of minor states ganging up on us and distracting us from our true enemies. Morpheus's recommendation was simply to annex all nearby minors, thereby ensuring that they will never attack the House of Habsburg agian. After the meeting, Morpheus departed for some place we have vaguely heard of called Sibir.
1578
Our spies in Spain tells us the war goes well for our Aragonian allies, Rousillon and Valencia have fallen to their control (they already had Aragon and Gerona). A Spanish army has captured Aragon though. As the year ends, Aragon's forces are attempting to retake the capital as Spain attempts to retake Valencia. We send the Spanish monarch a letter informing that his mother was a cur. We have cut ties with Poland once more, a fire destroyed the Polish embassy in Vienna on a hot summer's night. The Polish king claimed it was an act of arson by a Moldavian terrorist cell we are rumored to be hiding. We sever relations over this outrageous suggestion even as I toast the leader of COFM (Citizens for a Free Moldavia) at my villa. Anti-Polish sentiment is high, as we have been accepting Moldavian refugees from the Polsih tyranny ever since the dark year of 1547, when the dastardly Poles destroyed the Moldavian nation.
1579
A peasant revolt is launched in Mantua after some heavy drinking at the new year's party there, the battle with the rebels was short, as they were too disoreinted to wield their pitchforks properly. Aragon retakes their capital, but it is soon under seige by Spain once more. We enter a royal marriage with Aragon in March to cement ties between our two realms. Disaster strikes this summer, when a plague, carried no doubt by vermin from Poland, kills half the population of Tyrol, Moravia, and Pressburg (Random Event). On the plus side, Habsburg armies were equipped with matchlock rifles for the first time.
1580
We appoint a chief judge for Istria province, its infrastructure has been upgraded considerably since its liberation from Venice. The Aragonian War of Independence is brought to a close on May 18, with Aragon parting with a token sum of 2D. The head of Aragon's military is brought to Vienna, where a parade is staged in his honor. Maps are then exchanged with Aragon, giving us up-to-date Spanish maps

! The only dark spot on a wonderful year was a peasant revolt in Mantua, but it was speedily dispatched.
1581
We decide to invest this year's treasury in infrastructure improvements. These investments pay off in October when we reach infrastructure level 5, allowing us to promote mayors to governors in our provinces. Our cartological knowledge grows exponentially in August, when a defector from the French navy arrives in Vienna. After swearing an oath of allegiance to Rudolf, he hands us a complete copy of France's sea-charts. We now know of India and the Pacific Islands (Random Event). Elsewhere, war breaks out in Middle East between Perisa and Iraq in April and Oman and Aden in August.
1582
Our first governors are appointed to Styria and Bavaria provinces. We face yet another revolt in Mantua, this time the rebels even hold the citadel for a time. Our royal marriage with Hungary is renewed and a long war between Turkey Venice ends on December 23 with the Venetians ceding Corfu.
