Embarrassingly NOOB Question, but... How can I edit Steam mods?

Still pretty new to Stellaris. I've downloaded some mods from Steam and want to adjust a thing or two, but I can't seem to find them on my computer. I can find a folder named "mod" in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris, but it only contains some MOD files I can't open (and based on their tiny byte size, I doubt that's what I'm looking for anyway).
So where would I find the "meat" for these mods I downloaded from Steam?

[This is especially embarrassing to ask because while I'm new to Stellaris, I'm plenty familiar with other Paradox games, and have edited mods for CK2, Victoria II, and EUIII/IV plenty of times. I just know I'm going to be all "of course!" when I get the answer.]

All the folders in there match the id number of a mod you've downloaded, look at the url of the mod you want and find that number in 281990.

BTW, if you do this, it's a good practice to copy the mod's zip file out of that directory, and put it over in your mods directory. Then unsubscribe from the mod on steam. If you merely modify the zip file an put it back, I believe if the mod author updates their mod, it will blast over your changes.
