The gender of the one POP is not given, and can just as well represent women as men, considering the large percent of women who indeed were the "breadwinnners" in terms of employment in agriculture, factory or service work in this period.

Perhaps what the Op meant was that all the Pop graphics were of men and he wanted women represented.

Women ARE represented, the graphics may be of men but its representive of both, the picture for craftsmen doesnt show every possible type of craft but its still representive of those who work in all of them.

Precisely, if we showed women then we would need to display children (and have special male and female graphics probably) as well as elderly men and elderly women. So setting up the POP's will be about five times as difficult.

He has a point.

In theese ages of gender-studies, he has a point. There is no need to add new pops: just include a women into the sprites showing the pops (eg. instead of one capitalist, a women and a men, both capitalists; she even may be shown on the right and not the left. And if you want a REAL nice game: show them fighting... ).
Could be the first step towards a more girls-friendly game !

There's not some elusive constituency of women who are just dying to play grand strategy games but for their horrid gender bias. Do we have evidence Civ 4, for example, did better with women by shoehorning as many female leaders into the game as possible?

Dunno; from what life tells me, girls are used to have other priorities than video games, especially when they reach the age targetted by PI games.

Putting a feministic touch into the game, though, should not be targetting women, but men. Yes: you heard me, all you guys who are happy with a game that simply ignores 50percent of past and present reality !
That women were not seen (at least to a certain extend) in the political sphere during the 19 century deosn't mean they played a lesser role. Take my gran gran gran father for a example, who was localy politically involved; well without his wife, this guy would have been a nobody; she basically supported the life of the entire familiy through work and patience. And she was not the only one in this case: the patriarchal system always relied on women - I thought everyone kows that by now. So please, add at least a few sprites.

Nope. Unless Paradox works with EA to allow female gamers to upload their Sims' characters into the Victorian Era.

Women, Geography and History do not mix, I think it has something do with the extra X chromosome. Even the ones with Masters and PhDs in history and political science tend to make simple mistakes such as Poland bordering Switzerland.

The only woman I've ever met who handled geography well was Finnish, I think it's one of their things like skinny dipping in saunas and hunting reindeer.

That means more work for Paradox however, not to mention a massive amount of additional research and work. Paradox would be better served I think if they went an ethnic route, after all those Ethiopion capitalists did not look much like their British bretheren!

What happens to the sprites when the POPs can't afford reg. clothing? Might be a problem with the age recommendations. Plus do you really want MIL to vary so much within a month?

In case of POPs not being able to afford clothing.
Young female POPs = militancy decrease on men
Older female pops = Consciousness increase ("Mein eyes!") and militancy increase ("hey King how come grandma's naked? 'rabble rabble rabble!' )

Added women to the pop sprites wouldnt make it girl-friendly, it would just make it patronising and look stupid, itd be more offensive to intelligent women while the extreme feminists would applaud it thats nothing to be aiming for. As stated before the Clergy simply shows one type of Clergyman, the Farmer only shows one type of farmer, if you were added women for 'real representation' then youd need each POP picture to be a crowd of ten thousand little men, women and childern for every possible type of occupation that would fit into that POP class.

You guys ever heard of Eleanor Marx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleanor_Marx??? It's not because it's not remembered that it didn't happen.

IMHO, if socialist (and leftward) government take over, it should trigger some events that would represent the changes in voting rights, participation in the workforce, state's revenue and so on. A change in sprite at that point could be interesting but not needed.

And while I'm posting on this thread, do you guys realise how disgustingly offensive some of your posts are toward women in general?

Perhaps the effect of women would be best represented through POP efficiency. Moreover, in countries where a female workforce is allowed, POPs become more efficient (due to more of those POPs from the 1:4 ratio being involved in working).

The same thing could be applied for child labour. In such a case, there could be all sorts of literacy/research penalties if you have children in your workforce - they're not at school, afterall.

Not that I'm aware of. I don't recall anything to do with female workforce in Vicky 1 (though I may have forgotten something haha!).
I hope that giving women the vote will be a reform (and presume it will)
Yeah. It would probably affect the consciousness of conservatives and liberals in some way, mind.
