Just realized there is a hidden bonus to electronics:
You get the research bonus techs some 100 days earlier, summed up.

How does a player get research bonus techs 100 days earlier?

(which research bonus techs are we talking about).

Sounds interesting, I'd like to learn more.

Did you take into consideration the research time saved by having computers sooner? Saving 10 days on a computer tech quickly becomes 1 research day for each reseach slot. I've always assumed that was the basis of the balancing, but it probably should have been rebalanced after bonuses became additative rather than subtractive.

This. The bonus you get to the electronics research applies to all the other research as well, so the benefit should be in research/days across all your research slots, not just the electronics one...which might add up, especially if you have a lot of them.

Another consideration: most nations have some kind of research bonuses for industry in their focus tree which decrease the relative return from the 15% speed boost. Not the case for electronics, barely anyone has bonuses for that.

The "Electronic Mechanical Engineering" and subsequent techs. You get them faster through electronics concern, 20-30 days per tech, to be exact. That sums up to ~100 days by 1942, or to be exact: you get 20d of Research speed +4%, 30d +5%, 30d +8% and in 1942, again 30d +8%. (At least roughly calculating.) It's marginal, but applies to all research done, permanently.
So, I estimate you save around 1 research day for the 2nd 36 Tech (times 5), 1.5 days for the 38 tech and 2 or so in 1940 and 42. Times 5 each, so there is the whopping number of 33ish research days saved by virtue of having the tech earlier.

Probably, by watching out for Dutch Phillips:

@Zauberelefant , yeah these numbers are laughable compared to what you save by just picking Industry. If you then also need Synthetic stuff, it would be like 33 days saved vs many hundreds.

Besides, you can't consider the benefits of getting Electronics earlier without considering those of Industry too! Receiving extra production/slots/resources earlier has its merits of producing more over the same time.

I don't like the concept of +research research projects. It is like a mandatory research you haveto participate just to keep up with other nations.
It is like Stellaris' Unity - pre-unity ambitions there were traditions that boosted Unity production that you can spend only on...unity. Bureaucracyexpanding to meet the needs of expanding bureaucracy
I'd rather have some utility research added to Electronics branches and reduced research times across the board.

Just included it for sake of completeness.
Besides, Research boost tech and industry boost techs are somewhat no brainers. That's a major fault of the system rn.
