  • For the Motherland
I have a title, the Kingdom of Sicily. It's currently set to Agnatic-Cognatic Elective. My granddaughter is my current heir, her mother having died. I decided that I wanted my great-great-granddaughter as my heir, since she's a zealous/honest/just/kind/gregarious/brave type being raised by a grey eminence (me), and also a genius. Currently, she's 14 years old.

So, I decide that I want to murder my granddaughter so that I can make her daughter my heir. My daughter, no doubt vary from my previous attempts to kill her, continues to evade her death. Fine. She then evades my 80% chance of imprisoning her, before a non-plot based assassination kills her (she knows it was me, so does the world). Her daughter remains my ward, we still get along fine. But I can't make her my heir, she doesn't show up in the list.

Is it because her mother fled my court? Is it too many generations down the line? Is it a bug? Is it something else entirely?

Elective is really fun because of the planning it requires. You have a lot of options for succession, but they're not all eligible. In order to be eligible, they either need to be an elector in the kingdom (so a duke), or they need be the child of a current or former monarch, or the child of a child of a former monarch (and their parent must be deceased). The way it works with the children of children (so your grandchildren) is they need to have inherited a weak claim to be eligible. The weak claim goes to the kid of the monarch, and from there can be passed to their children, but it won't be inherited any further (so said characters will actually need to become monarch in order for the claim to be passed on).

You can check on this if your current character has living and dead siblings; your live siblings will have a weak claim that is inheritable (which they got from your parent who was monarch), and the deceased siblings will have children who all have weak claims that cannot be inherited.
