In my current game the Orthodox Greek lords of the Byzantine Empire decided to elect the Catholic Norman King of Sicily as the new emperor. It seems weird to me that they would elect a ruler who is both a different faith and culture rather than one of their own. I'm not exactly sure how the AI selects who its going to rally behind in Elective monarchy when its unhappy with the current ruler's line, but I feel their should definitely be a strong preference for rulers that share the AI's faith.

I thought that the AI would never vote for someone not of the Culture/Religion.

He could've converted to Greek, and then been elected, and then converted to Norman.

I think the AI may vote for some of their religious group (Orthodox will vote for Catholic)

It seems like it should be a good idea to implement an option to be elected, via event, but that you (player or AI) have to convert to the dominant religion of the title you are being elected to. I think there were a few occasions when something similar happened, so...

If I'm right, Those Normans get to vote as they are a de-jure part of the Empire.
If that's right, Chances are Odo there made all the Normans vote for him, and the Byzzies were simply to divided to elect anyone else. And hey Presto... You get this... rather... crazy... mess...
one other questions.
1. Islamic Sicily? Why hasn't it been dogpiled by the 9 odd states of Southern Italy? Or is that not Sicily...

This is might be what happened. Though I have no way to check. I still think its weird as there are a lot more Greek than Norman rulers.

In any event, Odo has since passed away. His grandson, who is not yet of age, inherited the Kingdom of Sicily, but the Greeks elected one of their own as the new Emperor. The empire is Orthodox once again. Good job guys.

one other questions.
1. Islamic Sicily? Why hasn't it been dogpiled by the 9 odd states of Southern Italy? Or is that not Sicily...

The Emirate of Sicily (as opposed to the Kingdom) is a vassal of the Sultan of Andalucia and Galicia. That would be me.

The history is that there was a Jihad for the Kingdom of Sicily, which I won. Odo was actually landless for a couple years. Fortunately for him, a significant number of my vassal Emirs revolted and the Pope called for a Crusade against Sicily shortly afterwards. I couldn’t handle both wars simultaneously and the Crusade was successful. However, because the Emirate of Sicily was in revolt, it was not included in the restored kingdom. Following his restoration, Odo was elected Emperor despite his Catholicism, which is when the above screenshot was taken.

Favors have nothing to do with this.

I also don´t think that the unified norman electors vs. divided greek electors cause this.

I rather think it is again of the known and reported cases where the "overthrow ruler" faction empowers the least likely person instead of the most likely one. It is already reported and documented in the bug report forum, though i have the Impression that the devs don´t take this seriously.

Regardless, when the "overthrow ruler" faction fires, you will quite usually get extremely weird results, with people becoming emperor woh are neither of the right culture, nor of the right religion, nor being particularly popular in any other way.

I have seen the captain of the Varangian Guard become emperor this way, i have also been empowered twice this way myself (once as a slothful arbitrary miaphyisite armenian, once as the despot of serbia with absolutely horrible traits and tyranny in the realm). What a nonsense.
