I know how the AI decides on who they vote for for elective, but this one has me stumped/a little ticked off. It's a bit of a rant, but would also appreciate any insights into the mechanics.

I rule a Bolghar/Catholic Empire of Carpathia, managed to get a kinsman with a strong claim on the Byzantine Empire, unfortunately he is Greek culture because he was born there and they wouldn't let me educate him, but I decide to try and make him my heir anyway. Invite him to court, land him as a King, vote for him. All of my vassals have 90+ opinion, 90% are Bolghar and my dynasty (woohoo antipope excommunications). The only people that will vote for him are me and him. It's a landslide for my son, who in fairness is the best character I've ever seen, strong/genius, 32 diplomacy and his 5 stats add up to over 100. I am totally okay with this, it makes sense they would vote for the stud local, not some foreign schmuck.

So I wait until he has two kids, a son and a daughter, have them both educated with me and turn them Bolghar, then I press his claim and install him as Emperor (losing his Kingdom of Saxony in the process - short term pain, long term reward). This is what makes me lose my mind. Once the son reaches 16, he returns to his fathers court, and immediately becomes heir. He is not Greek, he is not Orthodox, he was not Born in the Purple. The voting vassals hate their usurper, Catholic, Saxon (he must've changed to local culture, didn't know the AI did that) emperor. How does that make any sense? To boot, despite 80 relation with me, the son won't come to my court because he loves daddy and being heir.

I know I probably messed up by not waiting until the son was 16 and landing him before pressing the father's claim, but I didn't in a million years expect them to make the son heir.

Again, any explanations appreciated :)

TL : DR - Byzantine empire voting a wrong culture, wrong religion, not born in the purple character as heir.

His high stats likely means he has very high relations with everyone in the empire irrelevant of other qualifiers. Therefore they vote for him.

Sorry the high stat guy was my son, who became ruler of my empire and I am currently playing as. The guy they are voting for in the Byzantine Empire is nothing special stats-wise.

Well then I'm not sure. Perhaps hes just well liked?

The Ai as I understand it tend to vote:
  • The same as the ruler if they have high relations.
  • Prefer to vote for someone they have high relations with.
  • Prefer adults over children.
  • (I believe) they calculate off the parents relations if the child is still a minor.
I'm assuming the child is an adult cause you mention inviting him. He could just have high enough relations with a bunch of different electors, to beat out other potential candidates. There could also be a relatively limited number of actual electors?

Different culture, religion I think only penalise relations nothing beyond that. "Born in the Purple" wouldn't matter (beyond the relation boost) in a elective monarchy.

Everything I'm saying here is just guesses though. It's definitely an odd situation.

I suppose it's possible but they don't like the Emperor and I can't imagine them having good relations with the son with both the foreigner and religious differences malice. Very frustrating when your well-laid plans unexpectedly fall apart lol.

Also, culture differences is a big turn-off for electors.
