Sorry to post this here, but the FAQ board didn't seem to be terribly vibrant. I'm a new player, used to Europa Universalis, and I didn't get a manual w the game, so ...

It's election season in the Netherlands, I want to see who's winning. When I hit "Election Data," I get that pie chart at the bottom for "Latest Polls." It shows approximately:

Socialist: 55%
Conservative: 20%
Liberal: 20%
Communist: 5%
But when I hit the "Parties" tab, where you can ban or set the ruling party, it's VERY different. The Liberals are a plurality with 40%, followed by the Anti-Revolutionaries (18%), the Socialists in 3rd with 16%, and then another conservative party and the Communists with 11% each.

The Liberals then win the elections.

SO. What does that pie chart tell me? There's roughly a 30% difference between the pie chart results (Socialist majority) and the "Parties" tab results and actual election outcome (Liberal government.)

What's the relationship between these two measures and what does each mean?

Thanks for your help, all.

The discrepancy might be because one poll shows you what the result would be if all your pops could vote. The other is what the result would be under your current voting rights - the more restricted the voting rights are, the less will your workers and even your clerks and craftsmen matter.

What voting rights do you have?

I think Wilhelm is right.

If you look under the militant listing for each POP, it's broken down into ideology and individual issues. So even if you are Fascist or Communist, which the majority of the population never is, you might still have everyone supporting your issues.

Yes and no

Thx for the quick reply. I think Wilhelm is wrong and Leviathan is right. The ppls top issue, (and I picked "Issues" instead of "ideology" way back when,) was Anti-Military and their 2nd issue was Full Citizenship. Socialist Party offers both of those, while the Liberals offer neither.

Also, I have full suffrage, so it's not a matter of restricting voting rights by wealth or anything.

SO: My guess is, that pie chart refers to my entire population, including the massive colonial empire, all 63 million Dutch + subjects. A quick unrepresentative sample of a few of my colonies does show a huge number of leftists and a couple conservatives, whereas the home territories are much stronger for the liberals.

Conclusion: Yeah, the pie chart and top voting priorities refers to the total population of your entire empire; whereas those % results are the actual VOTING population, ie. excluding colonial subjects. (Which in some cases are larger populations than the home country itself.)

Thanks for your assistance with this, everyone.

But if POP has a low consciousness it tends to vote the ruling party regardless of ideology and issues. And I think the population overview screen shows the ideological distribution of the entire population and ¨latest polls¨ only of the electorate.

Actually, the latest polls always shows the ideology of the people those have the right to vote. However, the ideologies of the whole population can be seen in the population tab. But, as said before, ideology isnt the only thing having effect on which party they vote. If populism is chosen over establishment, then the individual issues have more impact that the actual ideology of the pops.
