Madrid had fallen some weeks before, and whilst the final pockets of resistance in the south were being snuffed out, Carlos V had begun planning his official coronation – he knew that it would mark the true beginning of his reign, and by its pomp and grandeur it would project the majesty and might of Spain’s new King. It would bring the people together in awe and praise, he hoped – or at least distract them from their worries of the past few years. On the first of June, 1839, the King was officially crowned.
The Coronation of Carlos V, King of Spain
Carlos V entered into Almudena Cathedral, and was greeted by a hymn:
I was glad when they said unto me:
We will go into the house of the Lord.
Our feet shall stand in thy gates:
O Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is built as a city:
that is at unity in itself.
O pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
they shall prosper that love thee.
Peace be within thy walls:
and plenteousness within thy palaces.
The King progressed up the church, the voices of over a thousand Carlists filled the church. He walked past the choir, before kneeling in front of the altar, and the Primate of Spain before it. After a few prayers to God almighty the rightful king moved back into the first row of the Pews.
The Bible, Paten, and Chalice were in turn brought by the archbishop of Sevilla, Galicia and Barcelona
Behind them were the Lords who backed Carlos's cause in full regalia. Holding their swords out wards, Zumalacarregui went towards the Primate, giving him the Crown, before bowing and going with the other nobles to accompany their King into the Pew.
These 'gifts' were then placed into the Altar as the Ceremony began.
The archbishop along with the various secretaries of the King, notably the First Secretary, as well as Generals Zumalacerragui, Huerta, and Durante went to the front of the church repeating in unison, as the King went up to the Altar before him.
Sirs, I here present unto you
King Carlos,
your undoubted King:
Wherefore all you who are come this day
to do your homage and service,
Are you willing to do the same?
The People showed their willingness and pure jubiliations and all with one voice cried out
GOD SAVE THE KING.
Then the trumpets sounded.
The Primate began the coronation Vows, asking:
My King, is your Majesty willing to take the Oath?
And the King answered,
I am willing,
Archbishop: Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the territories of España?
Carlos: I solemnly promise so to do. He said, clutching a Bible.
Archbishop: Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgements?
Carlos: I will.
Archbishop: Will you to the utmost of your power maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel?
Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the España the Catholic religion established by law?
Will you maintain and preserve inviolably the settlement of the Roman Catholic Church, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established by our Lord Jesus Christ?
And will you preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of España, and to the Churches there committed to their charge, all such rights and privileges, as by law do or shall appertain to them or any of them?
Carlos: All this I promise to do.
Then the King arose out of his Position, his sword of state in hand, moved towards the image of Saint Mary
The things which I have here before promised, I will perform, and keep. So help me God.
The King Kissed the bible he was clutching before rising and crossed himself.
The king having thus taken his Oath, returned again to the Pews, and the Bible delivered to the Dean.
When the King was again seated, the Archbishop went to him, receiving the Bible from the Dean, he brought it to the King and presented it to him, the Archbishop said:
Our gracious King:
to keep your Majesty ever mindful of the law and the Gospel of God
as the Rule for the whole life and government of Christian Princes,
we present you with this Book,
the most valuable thing that this world affords.
He continued:
Here is Wisdom;
This is the royal Law;
These are the lively Oracles of God.
Then the King delivered the Bible back to the Archbishop, who brought it to the Dean, who reverently placed it again upon the Altar. This done, the Archbishop returned to the Altar. Then began the communion. The archbishop , bowing down at the foot of the altar, made the Sign of the Cross and said:
In nómine Patris, et Fílii, et Spíritus Sancti. Amen.
Then joining his hands before his breast, he began the Anthem:
Introíbo ad altáre Dei.
S.Ad Deum qui lætíficat juventútem meam.
Joining his hands, he said

Amen.
He drank the wine and water, afterwards he cleaned the chalice and veiled it.
Moving to the middle of the Altar the archbishop said:
P. Dóminus vobíscum.
S. Et cum spíritu tuo.
Returning to the middle of the Altar, he kissed it and turned to the people, saying:
P. Dóminus vobíscum.
S. Et cum spíritu tuo.

The Last Blessing
Kneel
Bowing before the Altar the archbishop said silently:
Pláceat tibi, sancta Trínitas, obséquium servitútis meæ: et præsta; ut sacrifícium, quod óculis tuæ majestátis in indígnus óbtuli, tibi sit acceptábile, mihíque, et ómnibus, pro quibus illud óbtuli, sit, te miseránte, propitiábile. Per Christum Dóminum nostrum. Amen.
He kissed the Altar, turned to the people and blessing them said:
Benedícat vos omnípotens Deus, Pater, et Fílius, et Spíritus Sanctus.
S. Amen.
The Last Gospel
Stand
The archbishop went to the right side of the Altar and said:
P. Dóminus vobíscum.
S. Et cum spíritu tuo.
S. Glória tibi, Dómine.
In princípio erat Verbum, et Verbum erat apud Deum, et Deus erat Verbum. Hoc erat in princípio apud Deum. Omnia per ipsum facta sunt: et sine ipso factum est nihil, quod factum est: in ipso vita erat, et viat erat lux hóminum: et lux in ténebris lucet, et ténebræ eam non comprehendérunt.
Fuit homo missus a Deo, cui nomen erat Joánnes.
Erat lux vera, quæ illúminat omnem hóminem veniéntem in hunc mundum.
The communion drew to a close, and the King prepared to return to the Palace of Aranjuez.
Te Deum Laudamus
We praise thee, O God:
we acknowledge thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship thee:
the Father everlasting.
To thee all Angels cry aloud:
the heavens and all the powers therein.
To thee Cherubin and Seraphin:
continually do cry,
Holy, Holy, Holy:
Lord God of Sabaoth;
Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty:
of thy Glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles:
praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets:
praise thee.
The noble army of Martyrs:
praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world:
doth acknowledge thee;
The Father:
of an infinite majesty;
Thine honourable, true:
and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost:
the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory:
O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting Son:
of the Father.
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man:
thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.
When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death:
thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God:
in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come:
to be our Judge.
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants:
whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood.
Make them to be numbered with thy Saints:
in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people:
and bless thine heritage.
Govern them:
and lift them up for ever.
Day by day:
we magnify thee;
And we worship thy Name:
ever world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord:
to keep us this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us:
have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us:
as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted:
let me never be confounded
With that, Carlos V was, beyond all doubt, the true King of Spain, confirmed by the strength of the soldiers, the spirit of the people, and the will of God.
