After satteliting half of Europe after forming Grossdeutchland, I got bored of being so overwhelmingly dominant, so i decided to try a game as Egypt. Has anyone had a successful game as Egypt? What sort of strategies would work best?

That's funny, I actually just started a game as Egypt. I just lost the war to the Ottomans (so I could get civilized) and have been promoting clergy to get some more research points. My first steps will be to try to trade for some land from the Ottomans (land not their national provinces). I am going to role play a little however and bring about a revolution and put the socialists in power and go for a Pan-Arab republic, so maybe my thoughts will divert from your game plan there.

Cool, I will start my new game with them. Any more tips about how to play them?

Edit: I started playing and think that maybe a bug with leadership points. Despite having defence budget at maximum and having officials in the country I am not generating LP. Are you guys finding the same problem? Any idea of what´s going on?

I had the same problem - once you become civilized that leader generation will go positive again; just promote your one leader allowed and hang back for a bit.

Also, I would promote quite a few clergy - target the large POPs in Cairo (as it produces grain, which does not add much to your balance sheet), to boost your research point generation once you turn civilized. You can always put a party with pluralism or secularized to return those clergy to farmers once the economy gets going.

Make sure to get the tech "Freedom of Trade" as early as possible - it will boost the prices you receive for your goods significantly.

I civilized but still don´t get any LP.
Apart from that is going well, I converted those farmers in Cairo to clerks, researched freedom of trade and publishing industry plus some trade quickly and switched to State Cap party to start a Fabrics factory. At the beginning was losing money but it improved a lot when i researched mechanical production. Then more clerks and craftsmen and the first trains in the delta to increase cotton production.
Now is 1868 and have a healthy economy and research, a level2 factory fully staffed, trains in most of of the Lower Nile and was able to trade 2 Ottomans provinces in Africa (one with diamonds!!!). Due to lack of machine parts I have decided to stop the economical growth and concentrate in increasing the army. If I have to fight without generals I hpe at least my troops are good enough

If you can avoid getting satellited by the UK, you're a pro ;)
They take 2 provinces in the north and 1 in the south, and satellite you. It's an event.
I tried Egypt once, tried to remain independent, but couldn't fight off the UK and all their allies. There were too many of them and they just kept landing.

It´s not going to be that difficult, but not because I am a pro...
I read something in this forum about the weakness of the UK IA in the military area, but what I have seen this game is top of the top. They declare a war on France in 1841 due to the Morocco affair. When I next check, after France annexing Morocco and signing a white peace is that UK has only 1 division. Then they go to work against USA, and in the meantime Ireland and Scotland  declare independence. British India has to solve the situation invading Ireland and taking some provinces off them. Then revolt in London and England falls prey to a reactionary rebellion!!! They annex British India and inherit their magnificent 77 divisions. Some years and a crushing of Scotland later they drop to 66 divisions. Then they declare war on Ireland and after a bloody campaign take some provinces off them, but they have around 16 divisions left only.
Then liberals revolt in England and install a democracy (poor Vicky kicked out ), with only 3 divisions!!!!!!
The problem is that they still have a huge navy and refuse to sign a peace. My militancy is skyhigh and have revolts all around, so I pray the situation improves ASAP or I will end having my own revolutions too!!!!

On the leadership front it may be because those officer POPs are not state culture; promote some Misri to officers and you should get some generation. Also, if you garrison the coastal provinces early the UK should be unable to penetrate to the interior - it becomes a waiting game but eventually they will give up. The only headache you'll have is British India, but if you can garrison the coastal provinces their war exhaustion should go up to a level that they'll accept a white peace.

As Alyosha says, I think the problem is that your officer POPs are Circassians, representing the Turko-Circassian elite who actually ruled Egypt, to the exclusion of indigenous Egyptians (the Msiris ingame).

We'll get this remedied in the next edition of VIP by having Circassian as a state culture, with Msiri as a secondary one.

I think that the Circassians should be the secondary culture due to the game mechanics involving assimilation. It'd be a bit strange seeing people adapt a minority culture rather than the majority culture if assimilation occurred in Egypt.

Yes, you were right, there are no Misri officials. I never suspected that non state culture officials added nothing to the pool

Regarding the UK, I don´t need to worry about them any more. Because I wanted to make the game a bit challenging, loaded as UK and sorted the factories so they were producing some small arms and ordered 3 more divisions. When I loaded as Egypt again the AI had cheated on me and moved my coastal garrisons to the inside of the country to fight an insignificant rebellion. While I tried to send them back they landed with the original 3 divisions and it became really hard to fight them due to terrain and highly superior tech. Then they landed the 3 ones that I have built for them.
At the end I managed to destroy the 6 divisions recruiting loads of new soldiers and almost going into debt with my economy severely damaged. After I killed them took two provinces in Kenya and them Mughalistan declared independence. Too much for UK, that signed a white peace.
Maybe now I´ll promote some officials but I hope not to get in difficult wars anymore

Well they do give a one-off increase when converted, though they do not provide a monthly increase as national-cultured officers do.

Mughalistan or the Mahdists? I've noticed the UK is incapable of defeating the Mahdists (and often loses).

Ahh right. Yeah, Mughalistan is on the Indian subcontinent and they would revolt historically in 1857/1858 for the Indian rebellion, though they can come about ahistorically as a revolter too.

That's awesome, I don't think I've ever seen them collapse so completely. I've seen Ireland declare independence, I've seen the British refuse to build any troops, I've seen their navy destroyed, but the scenario you're describing is more crazy.

In that case, your Egypt will be fine :)

Yes, it was really fun to watch, I have seen three UK flags so far (nice detail BTW). I think the deciding event were the ahistorical wars against France and USA.

Despite all, I still have some fun fighting their 6 uber divisions, plus the madhists revolts in Sudan, plus nationalists in the recently annexed Kenya plus the liberals in the Delta. I think I just survived because I happened to research Ideological Th. just before the "party" started and because my economy was able to support a decent army
