How should I go about civilizing these guys in vanilla 1.03c? The army is good, but their production is of very little value and totally insufficient for keeping the country afloat.

VIP or regular? In VIP, you have a nice chain of uncivilised countries to beat up and annex for their resources. In regular, you have plenty of wide open space in Central Africa to colonise, and you can sell the colonies to the European powers if you have to.

Also, how's your budget? Don't expect to fund much crime fighting or peacetime defence spending as a poor uncivilised.

Don't make me put you on the EFPDRF's Purge List.

And in VIP, it's called Abyssinia.

Vanilla 1.03c. I just loaded up my starting position. Income total is 2.9 from taxes at 33.3% + 39.9 from tariffs. How on earth am I supposed to find the raw materials and leadership pts to colonize? Last time I tried my problem was that buying resources immediately put me in the red, leading to a vicious circle and eventual bankrupcy.

I've tried selling Cyprus and Crete to the French for money and tech.

How is your spending? Even if you manage to get only 10-15 a day, it's good enough to build on. Also, if I could find the leadership points and raw materials to colonise as Ethiopia, you should certainly be able to do so with Egypt! Just don't expect to do anything fast.

Also, provinces that are next to the country you are selling it to are much higher in price. Try selling the middle of Cyprus and one of the provs of Crete to France, then on a second trade sell the other three for a much higher price.

I remember that AAR. But it would have been on 1.03b, wouldn't it? 1.03c introduced a cap on the capitalist bonus and fixed a few bugs in the tariff calculation, as well as making the non-state culture income dependent on ruling part policy. So it would have had some effect on the economic aspect of the game, especially the mid-late game when you normally have Superstates with 5 000 000 capitalists giving your workers 1000% bonuses or whatever before 1.03c.

France is your friend, sell some provinces in syria that borders OE for techs and such.
If you don't want to get involved with OE in the war just make sure that you are at war with some pathetic country like Yemen for some while.

And you should definatly counquer Ethiopia :D

Yeah, the EFPDRF is definitely making an enemies list.

You should really concentrate on somehow eliminating the threat that the Ottoman Empire poses to you before embark upon such ridiculous and ultimately doomed quests as conquering Ethiopia. :nods:

Havent played the game since last post as we are renovating the bathroom. In my experience the OE could be contained pretty easily by giving either UK or France the border provinces (I've used that exploit against the US as Mexico), but that would cut me off from the iron provinces mentioned in the AAR, and it feels weird RP-wise.

Are you renovating the bathroom or do you just play games in there? ;)

You could sell the middle province on cyprus to france directly for cash and then the other two for more cash and techs if you don't want to give up syria.

with the money and techs you should be able to build yourself a factory, just keep expanding it even if you don't have enough pops to fill it with.
remember that greek, turkish and aramenians can move far away so you should make them craftsmen and Arabic pops clerks if it's possible.

In the event versus Turkey don't take more troops than you can handle.

Actually, I think you can use most of the basic strategies in Memnon's AAR, at least initially, to get civilized. One difference is that you can't trade techs that you don't have the prerequisites for. What are Egypts initial starting techs? Does it have whaterwheel power, freedom of trade, flintlock rifles? Getting the required prestige and military score shouldn't be that hard, so the biggest problem is to industrialize. You can gobble up lots of uncivs pretty safely, since you don't border any civilized nation that can punish you except for the OE, which you will be warring a lot with anyway.

Civilized Egypt in the 1860s and could have done it earlier if I hadnt asked for the wrong tech in my first trade with France. I did a few things differently compared to Memnon, I went for a quick peace with the Ottomans for some Iraqi provinces (so I dont have any Iron:() and I didnt disband my dear jihadists. The latter gave me enough mil score for the Ottomans to stay quiet and they havent troubled me since. I also got prestige from colonizing some small areas in Sudan rather than attacking the uncivs before they go bankrupt.

The late civilizing means I am behind in prestige and cant get some key resources on the WM. I'm seriously lacking explosives (to boot out the Europeans from Niger and Chad), coal and steel. I can often not get Iron either:( Otherwise I am doing fine, still 6th in mil score in spite of not training any new troops.

The most precious thing is to get access to at least one coal and one Iron province, but feck knows where I can get those in RP-sensible way. I dont want the steppe barbarian (ie Turk;)) provinces, and I think the concept of a Caliphate with Asian colonies is a bit absurd.

But maybe I shouldnt talk to much about roleplaying, given that the caliphate is a modern constitutional monarchy (albeit with landed voting rights):p

Doesn't Persia have both iron and coal provinces? They most certainly belong with the Caliphate ;) Also, IIRC there's one iron province in Algeria or thereabout.

I suppose you could continue chewing up the Ottomans piecemeal, taking Libya and Iraq (which are hardly Turk ;)), using superior human skills to outwit your more powerful foe. Since this is vanilla 1.03c, Tripoli should also be bankrupt and ready for 2-step annexation. That should net you a little bit of prestige. As for coal and iron, IIRC there are a few provs in Katanga, below the Congo. Good luck getting there from Egypt, though. There's a very nice coal RGO in Calabar, but that's in Nigeria, so it should be gone. I suppose France already annexed Al-Djazir? Because IIRC they had a few good iron provinces, too.

EDIT: Varyar replied while I was typing. Yeah, there's at least one good iron prov in Al-Djazir, but it should be taken by the French by now. (Perhaps it's time to turn on your European ally!) There's also, of course, Persia.

Coal is really the big problem, there is none on the WM.

All the African uncivs are gone, Tripoli and Ethiopia belong to my Empire, Sokoto to the Brits, and Algeria/Tunisia to France. I thought about buying the two Algerian Iron provinces from the French.

Africa is filled up with colonial claims and there is little I can do about it sans a colonial war, for which I would need a colony.. The Portuguese (who got from coast to coast)/French(crappy performance, only Gabon and Algeria until I bought Bathurst from the brits and gave to them)/Brits(Gold coast and Volta)/Spanish(Mauritania)/Americans(Rwanda and some other inland areas) are all over the place. I could claim Niger, Chad, and one area to the SW of Sudan if only I had explosives to build colonial forts.

Nigeria south of Sokoto is full of conflicting claims, but I would need colonial wars to get them all as they are too many to buy...

The current project is to convert ethiopian pops to clerks and make them move to my industrial powerhouse, Sudan. Too bad I dont have enough large pops to convert to capitalists there.

I think you can get some good coal RGOs by messing around in East Asia.
