Look at the bottom of this post for a personal trek through time and updates on other AARs.

First, Egypt? Well, at the end of my Maintain the Monarchy AAR I had a few suggestions: Madagascar, Oman, Hawaii, etc. and while playing around I was able to do something with Oman but I didn’t write it down. Hawaii is all alone and Madagascar is an unciv bordering no one so they’re about as screwed as a stripped bolt.

But in writing another AAR I wanted to choose a nation that could be competitive on the world stage, or at least be a part of it. So I chose Egypt. I played with them once or twice for a few years but got bored. Thus this AAR is born. Because I want to see if I can survive as Egypt in VIP till the end in some shape or form.

Scanning through the Library I’ve noticed there are only a few Egyptian AARs and only one that’s been completed but that was back in 2004! Only one was played with Revolutions and VIP and that was a few years ago... things have changed. Originally I wanted to wait until VIP 4.0 came out but since that’s up in the air - along with the inevitable patch - I’ve decided to just go ahead and play Egypt now.

Goals? Yeah, we got em:

- Give up zero amounts of land! And if we do - because we probably will - we’ll get it back by the end of the game. Hear that OE?

- Civilize

- Recover cores

- Navy, gotta be in the top three

- I’m not sure of what political tags Egypt has but by the end of the game I must either be Communist, Socialist or Fascist... if it turns out they don’t have those tags then I’ll go ahead and be whatever I want.

- Take all provinces with accepted culture people.

Rules? We got those too:

- Cannot satellite a top 15 nation

- Not so much a rule but a mark to try and stay below 25 bad boy. Anymore than that and I usually find myself in trouble if I’m not a competent power.

Summary:

- Retain all original lands
- Recover and hold cores
- Civilize
- Have a top three navy
- Great power status
- Become either Communist, Socialist or Fascist
- Cannot satellite a top 15 nation
- Absorb all provinces that have accepted culture people
- Try to stay below 25 bad boy
- Whether I win or die, we're taking this to the end
- This is going to be a gameplay only AAR

The first update should be out in a couple of days.

************

I’ve been away for two months, maybe its been a little more or a little less but the workload in real life exploded so I’ve been taking advantage of every opportunity available. In addition I’ve found another site that’s really taken to my abilities so you’re not going to see Brandenburg III around as much as you used to.

Since my time here will be limited, I’m only going to be paying attention to this AAR, any updates on Victoria 2 and VIP updates. I told you that so you won’t nominate me for awards and such because I simply won’t get around to replying to them. Keeping it simple, I don't want to be involved. Perhaps I’m becoming something of an Internet introvert, if there is such a thing.

The other AARs that I had running, I’m slaying them at this moment.

Looks interesting. I've toyed with Egypt in VIP 0.3 before, but with mixed results. Good luck!

Something I've always wanted to try, but can't pull off is turning Egypt into a democratic immigration powerhouse (it's much closer for all the Poles and Germans and Irish to get to than America - and there are more beaches). Anyway, enough of me. Good luck!

Interesting. Hereby I join, therefore.

Sounds good.

Following. :)

AllmyJames: The few times I tried Egypt it didn't go well. I’m going to be trying a different strategy here and hope it pays off. With Egypt, there’s a lot that can go wrong.

Legosim: Hopefully. As an unciv annexation is only one war away... and I don't have as much trouble sleeping as I used to so updates won't be as frequent as they were in the past which is when I used to write these things ;)

Enewald: I’m getting around to it... eventually.

Ahura Mazda: I don’t think I’ve ever had a save game corruption in all my time playing Paradox games so I should be fine.

Kurt_Steiner, Dr. Gonzo, mad general, JDMS & Beamed: Glad to have you along.

After loading up the game I discovered there are no provinces outside of Egypt that have Egypt’s accepted culture. But there are a few cores that I have to take before the end of the game. Here’s a quick shot of all that I have to absorb. Nothing else matters if I lose any original provinces or if I can’t get all Egypt's cores by the end of the game.

As Egypt I began with 6 irregulars (about 40k) 2 cav (17k) & 2 reg inf (17k). A few days after the first day I disbanded four of the six irregular troops and began selling all extra surpluses I had except for the 5 canned food and small arms I have. I’m going to need those later.

February 5, about a month into the game, I reinforced my cavalry and regular infantry units fully and was still making about .5 a day. One month later I declared war on Ha’il. If I’m ever going to take on the Ottoman Empire I’m going to have to force them to cover wide spaces. This is especially important because I’m going to have a hard time coming up with the amount of troops - due to money problems - that will permit me to take on the Ottomans.

This is a new tactic for me and the few times I have played as Egypt I was able to reach the Egyptian OE war and I was always slaughtered. We’ll see how this idea works in time.

On September 14 I annexed Ha’il, taking their provinces of 1 livestock and 2 grain.

Exactly one month and three days later I reinforced and declared war on Nejd. Once I take their provinces, the Ottomans won’t be able to expand south without running into a bit of trouble. Meaning, me.

25 March 1837 I annexed Nejd and that same day I kept going, declaring war on Abu Dhabi. By November they were annexed and I moved my sliders around a little.

Between those months mentioned above, I managed to catch a spy from Yemen, bringing my prestige up by 5, now making it -21. I tried going to war against Oman at this point but I soon discovered I had run out of diplomats. And while waiting I got the first of those Ottoman Empire/ Egypt events.

7 July 1838 I was able to declare war on Oman before the war with the Ottoman Empire began. Checking before declaring war I discovered Oman only had 2 irregular infantry units and only 1 bordered my lands. I assumed the other was in Africa somewhere.

Now I had checked out the other African nations like Abyssinia but Oman, with her opium, was a better risk in terms of what I could take in raw materials and possible manpower. Oman’s opium is what sealed her fate.

By October I occupied two Oman provinces and reduced my defense spending completely, meaning now I’m only losing .5 or .6 a day. I decided that I didn’t have to reinforce and if I really needed to, since I was keeping my troop level down, I could rack up the reserves in no time.

Then in May, while still at war with Oman, the Ottomans came calling and declared war. The French backed down as they almost always do.

ixs6mx.jpg

In May British India took Aden from Yemen - which is one reason why I didn’t go after Yemen right away. Less than a month later Oman sent me a peace offer better than what I hoped for. I quickly accepted, taking Al Jiwa, Mahra, Schedjer, Kalha, Keshim and Zanzibar. At the beginning of the war my goals had been less than that. I was willing to go without Keshim or any of Oman’s African provinces.

33dea7d.jpg

Al Jawa - grain - 2/5
Mahra - fish - 2/5
Schedjer - opium - 2/5
Kalha - opium - 4/5
Keshim - fish - 1/5
Zanzibar - sugar - 3/5

To conserve expenses while at war with the Ottomans, I halved my military maintenance. I have no desire to fight the Ottomans just yet. July 30 cavalry recruits rallied around the flag and I placed them immediately near Yemen...

Around October Zanzibar predictably revolted with about 7k. With only one transport and at war with a power capable of decimating my worthless navy, I let Zanzibar rot.

December 2 both the OE and I agreed to stop fighting for now... and I declared war on Yemen hoping I could annex the country before the next OE/Egypt popup came.

2miu0n.jpg

On the 29th the rebels occupied Zanzibar so I turned the place into a satellite. I thought it’d get rid of the rebels but it didn’t.

7 January 1840 the next possible war with OE option came and not a single Yemen province had fallen. Between fighting and moving, there wasn’t much time. For the moment I decided to accept the Europeans offer. I had to give up most of the OE cores, dropped 5 prestige and lost about 2 million people but I was able to civilize and obtained positive relations with the important heads of Europe. I’m about -60 with the Ottomans but that’s not important.

After that event I played through the rest of January with nothing to report but new sliders, the population overview and my provinces. I have -37 prestige and 316 cash which is rising. You’re not going to see many capitalists in this game. My intent is to control the industry completely, force myself to build railroads and to establish a respected, full citizenship government.

Good work. Nice expansions in Arabia.

I thought Egypt was Arab culture which is spread from Morrocco to Iraq.

Anyway sad to see Syria and Palestine lost but becoming civilised is invaluable.

This makes me miss my old Egypt game... :( The country has so much potential...

It'll be interesting to see what you will do differently! :)
