However, I'm all for colonial politics being modelled in-game - just not in a way that has units sitting around doing nothing, or fighting ahistorical division-sized battles against insurgents just because they are sited in a colony. You could, for example, have an independence-sentiment metric similar to that in EUIV, which if it goes beyond a certain point can lead to insurgency.
Seems very reasonable, and I can only second this motion.

Outside of the North-West Frontier (where tribal militias not under the direct control of the government were used) order was mostly maintained by armed police. Indian congress was not a violent revolutionary movement, instead most of the actual violent unrest during the period came from inter-communal violence, not insurrectionary movements.

To be fair, a lot of the independence stuff was tempered by British promises of fight for us = more independenence. Something their diplomats were promising freedom very freely, especially during the period where it really looked like England might get invaded. See promising both jews and arabs the holy land for the most well documented of these instances :p

But all this political stuff deserves much deeper models to fully represent. HoI is not however the game to do so, it's primarily a combat game compared to the other pdox titles. So the question is really; how best to represent and create a situation where;

1) India is well defended
2) A player is motivated to defend it, and abandonment is nonsensical.
3) India provides military might to the Brits in Europe and elsewhere
4) But still not too much! No Indian horde manning the Maginot Line.

?

Personally I am willing to accept some solutions that sacrifice a bit of historicalness to guide players into making similar decisions to real life, since a lot of political stuff cannot be modelled.

One potential solution is that India should have big manpower potential, you just shouldn't be able to tap too much of it playing as the colonial power. This would only be historical - the Indian Army was an all-volunteer force. Had the British been able to bring in conscription, they would have, but it would simply have caused a massive revolt against their rule. An independent India, on the other hand, should be able to tap that manpower potential much more deeply, even as puppet, thus motivating the player to defend India to avoid the spectre of:

1) Indian-origin units deserting

2) A large puppet Indian army being formed loyal to the Axis.

Additionally, loosing a colony should come with large prestige/unrest/whatever penalties.
