Chapter XIX: Portugal 1791-1800: Where the good portuguese become even more rich and they fight Spain whereas the LWW -longest world war- continues.

The war with Spain ended in the beginning of the last decade of the XVIII century. The sight of european diplomats discussing about arcane rules abut how end a war was too much for the Portuguese, that decided to simply not participate in that game.

So, Portugal decided to continue to worry about the prosperity of their population. The elections in the Parliament were clear also: Portuguese wanted to become more rich and to enjoy the new conquests of the past decade. And so it was done, since the will of the people is the will of the government in our good lands.

Portuguese troops were recruited, anyway, since it was foreseen that since the world war -started to being called LWW, longest world war in Portugal- continued, and it was clear that Portugal could be called to participate again. In the meantime, some anti-rebels battles were fought.

Portugal, also, decided to teach the evil swedes a lesson and to forcefully open trade. To make the decision more clear, the rich trade center of Sjaelland was taken from that corrupt nation. Alas, Sweden decided to close their trade to our dear nation again, so it is thought that a new war will be declared.

But, in the last years of the century, the predicted call was received. Spain had decided to go for war again. And so a declaration of war was issued and our troops moved to Spain.

The assault of Madrid. The 500 cannon siege train destroyed the fortifications there.

The frontier fortresses all fell quickly from Galicia to Andalusia, and our troops even took Madrid (altohugh the last 139 defenders with 1 cannon were particularly daring and withstood for several days until overwhelmed). The spanish counterattacked -and defeated a portuguese force in Alentejo, but currently Portugal controls all frontier provinces, spanish outposts in Malaya and the Indian Ocean. The spanish forces had been more successful in Southern America, but our troops there had been able to take some provinces there too. The portuguese advantage is strong, and Lisbon had started to think what to do about it.

The Times of Trouble part 2 (1791-1800)

As war was tearing Europe apart, the Sultanate aimed to improve its position, and stay away from any conflicts in which the superior European armies and navies would severely hurt the fragile Ottoman state. The most efforts were put into building Conscription Centers and improving the fortresses.

Seven barracks were built, in strategic locations throughout the Sultanate, and the forts(especially in the Balkans) were upgraded. Still weak though, the Ottomans can now face a war with better chances. The many vassals of the Sultanate prospered, but will soon have to be peacefully re-integrated. And speaking of vassals, a quick campaign in the East assured that the last of the Turkoman states of Central ASia, the Uzbek Kaganate, was forced to recognize Ottoman suzeranity.

Economically, the country improved as well. An increase of the income by 21 percent means that the Sultanate will be able to sustain war more effectively in the future, if need be. Trade is non-existant, but the main source of money are tax and production. Funds were distributed through Europe, to keep war away from the lands of the Sultanate. In the purpose of maintaining a balance, the province of Pest was leased to Austria for a period of 10 years, which also brought down the cost of building new Conscription Centers.

All research was put into new Land Combat Technologies, in hope of upgrading our obsolete army.

The Times of Trouble are, hopefully, ending.

After long and serious thinking...

Portugal decided that our glorious nation could not continue at the side of France. The perspective of french total hegemony on Europe -and all their peoples under a french boot- was too awful to endure. So the people of Portugal -after a very clear parliamentary election- decided to ally with Spain and to add their forces to the european cause to defeat France.

The french propaganda about the french coalition being about defeating autocracy do not deserve response when the will of France was to put other countries under their power. Domination, not a fight for liberation was the aim of the Franco Roman Empire. Long years of war will wait us, but we are confident in our ultimate victory.

Spanish King is delighted with this statement.

The good side always triumph in the end, together we'll defeat those nations that use power and violence to dominate others.

The Emperor thinks it rather is a matter of feeling sorry for the poor Spanish. We do wish our allies all luck in their future endeavors, even if their reliability has always been a bit suspect.
