What, exactly does Piety do?

I know it reduces BB over time, which affects your vassal loyalty among other things, but what else is it factored into?

Surely there must be more and the doco is very vague...

I know it reduces BB over time, which affects your vassal loyalty among other things, but what else is it factored into?

Surely there must be more and the doco is very vague...

The higher the Piety, the faster BB is reduced.

Also, if during a Crusade, the next Papal Controller is the ruler with the highest Piety. During times of no Crusade, it's the highest ranked relative (among other factors).

Don't forget that if piety is lower than the Pope's prestige then the Papal Controller can excommunicate the character. (obviously this only applies to Catholic characters - the Pope and Patriarch of Constantinople excommunicated each other from 1054 to the 1960s and no one cared)
