I am going to be playing Italy in an upcoming allied v. axis game. As a support role what kind strategy should I go for? Anything from division templates to, focus paths to vague advice helps. For the axis team we are likely to have a Germany, myself, Hungary, Romania and I guess if it counts Japan. Thanks for any advice!

Italy's main goal is to secure the Mediterranean so it's protected from Naval invasions, so push in libya until you've secured the levant and morroco. You also need to navel invade and take Gibraltar and the islands around the Med.
Next goal is to take Iraq for the oil
Then it's up to you on whether you want to push into Iran to india and the soviet Union (High risk - High reward play)
or just hunker down, protect the med, have some troops to help defend against a D-day and help the axis take out the soviets.

Personally I wouldn't bother with protecting the horn of Africa, too much effort for too little gain, if the rules allow I would puppet Ethiopia (after grinding for army xp) and use their manpower to make some divisions (I use them for coastal defence) and then never call them into the war so the allies don't murder them.

Don't neglect your navy, you will need one in order to defend the med and perhaps a cheeky sealion later on

General tips to remember; Air is king. If you're yellow air, make more planes. In relation to this remember to get some refineries to get synth rubber.
antitank is much more important in multiplayer than single.
People like to trade back, if someone is buying a resource off of you it's polite to buy a resource back off of them.
remember counter espionage, you don't want land you've conquered to just rise up behind your lines
If you're in a stalemate, tanks + Paratroopers can often give you a nice encirclement and break the lines

Don't forget torpedo bombers! The UK and France have a decent amount of naval assets in the Med, and naval bombers are great for wrecking those. It may be more efficient to just overproduce CAS and put them on naval bombing missions, but torpedo bombers are noticeably better at sinking ships than CAS. Just give them some fighters and radar for spotting and watch them tear stuff up.

Also, discuss the Yugoslavia situation with the German player ahead of time. Italy and Germany both have NFs that deal with Yugo, and they can interfere with each other if players aren't careful. Ask the German player if you can have all of Yugo. The resources are nice, plus you get a wider frontline against Greece. If Germany does its NF, an AI controlled puppet will spawn that... doesn't actually contribute much. Puppet Ethiopia can put out a surprising amount of manpower. Puppet Croatia adds a pink province on the Adriatic coast.

Italy is starved for resources. Yugo and Greece have resources. Ask, beg, plead with the German player to let you have full control of both (though when Hungary asks for their 2 provinces in Yugo, you can probably let them have those).

When you are losing Africa (and you will lose Africa against decent Allies), make absolutely sure that you don't lose Sicily or your Mainland in the next moment.
Make sure to have enough manpower and Infantry equipment to help with DDay defense.
Build Fighters, Fighters, Fighters.
And ask Germany frequently what he needs.
