I have a question about how the research result "Effect=(u) on upgrade" works.

As we know, some technologies give that as a result. In order to take advantage of that technology once I have it, does that mean I have to go through my units and click "upgrade to latest model" but just choose the same model?

Or does it mean my units get the effect automatically?

Thanks in advance!

If you take a look at the tech in the tech screen in HOI you will find some improvements have a (u) next to them while others don't. For the ones with the "u" you will need to upgrade to utilize the tech. For the ones without, you get it automatically

It costs almost nothing to upgrade a unit without changing the model, so whenever you make a sizable technological advance (generally just armor, aircraft, and ships; infantry aren't worth upgrading, since there isn't much to upgrade), consider upgrading, but only if you aren't going to upgrade to a new model anytime soon.

If you upgrade and change the model, that costs about 66% of the cost and 66% of the time of building a brand new unit. That amounts to roughly 45% of the total cost. Generally, I would prefer to just build a new one, and keep the older models as a supplimentary force, but that's because I never seem to have as many units as I'd like.

does new technology developed while a unit is in production apply , or do you have to upgrade afterwards ?
I found that the technology is applied is the most up to date technology at the time of initial deployment eg. if you built a cruiser while you were developing radar tech and did not deploy it when it was finished until you had developed the next level you would then get the newly developed tech without the need for you to upgrade it again.

To find out whether a u-tech makes upgrading your units necessary, click on the various unit types and see if the upgrade button is highlighted or dimmed.

Note: in general, no upgrades are ever necessary for infantry allthough the upgrade button lights up. Only foreign infantry units (like the austrian units aquired at Anschluss) need upgrades.

This is unnecessary and a second best solution. As already stated, the best way to know is just to look at the description of the tech when you are thinking about researching it. If there is a (U) next to it, you will need to upgrade deployed units to get it. If not, all units will get it for free automatically.

This is true for vanilla HOI, but if you play with Core (or other mods that add/change techs) you need to watch this. A number of mod techs for infantry are upgrade techs. Not a big deal. Just something to be alert for.

The first would be a change in the later patches then? I have made it a habit to test the facts by clicking the units because a lot of techs with a U designation never yielded any unit upgrade anyway. But perhaps that isn't so anymore?
Not every naval tech gives an improvement to attack, airattack, defense or airdefense although these are the ones that are most obvious. If you select the individual unit you can see a lot more combatstats such as visibility, subattack, subdetection etc. These can also be improved and that may be why the stats sometimes look unaltered after an upgrade.

Koop is right, and there is one other consideration that may sometimes confuse people. Sometimes a tech says it raises some value by "1", but doesn't seem to raise it at all in practice. This happens sometimes because of rounding. The game rounds values to the nearest integer for display, but it tracks the decimal values for actual calculations. So, for example, you might have a unit that shows a movement rate of 5, and you might research a tech that says it upgrades movement rate by 2 - and yet the unit shows a movement rate of 6 when you're done. This could happen if the actual movement rate was 4.5 and the tech actually upgraded movement by 1.5. This is how the game can add 5+2 and get 6, and is very common if you use Core, since it has a lot of incremental techs added to it.

BTW, the same kind of thing happens with percentages, too, which can add to the confusion. Something that raises movement by 10% when applied to a unit that had a movement rate of 4.5, would cause exactly the kind of thing you have been seeing. The 4.5 would be displayed as 5. But the 10% would be calculated as 10% of 4.5, not 10% of 5. So it would add .45 to 4.5 and get 4.95, which would still be displayed as 5. To all appearances nothing happened, but the game did upgrade the stat just as it claimed.
