Revised Brandenburg Event

I revised the exsisting event which incorporates Prussia into Brandenburg as there was no event that changed the culture of Prussia to German, I added it to this one in order to symbolize the new influx of colonists from Brandenburg. Also, as there is no Thirty Years War event for adding Vorpommern and Hinterpommern to Brandenburg's core provinces, (which happened historically in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia granting Brandenburg most Hinterpommern) I added them in here as well. Any suggestions or ideas are more than welcome

Unification of The Holy Roman Empire

Well, this is my attempt at making an event for the unification of the HRE. I placed it in the hugeevents.txt file, after all it is a huge one :D. I've set it up so that any catholic nation, if it succeeds in taking over all the HRE's provinces, can assume the name of the empire. Yes I did think about counter reform catholics too, but I didn't include them because they are not tolerant against protestants, and you need a little tolerance if you want to govern the empire. (ps. the text is from the academic american encyclopedia, no copying it!) any suggestions or comments are most welcome

In 800 Charlemagne had received from the pope the title of Emperor (Imperator Augustus) reminiscent of the title held by Roman emperors both in the Rome of old and in the Byzantium of the time. In 962 Otto I the Great king of Germany reclaimed the imperial dignity which had lost all prestige and it was conferred by popes on bit players in Italian politics. This is usually taken to be the founding date of the Holy Roman Empire. However the Empire never was a tight unity but rather a loose confederation of sovereign entities ranging from cities to whole kingdoms. The efforts of several Emperors to turn the Empire into a real superpower were always frustrated by the desire of the German princes to remain independent and thus the Emperor title became no more than a decorative title mostly held by the Austrian Archdukes until Napoleon put a end to it with his German campaigns. Comments on the German events:

It may make more sense to do it your way, but it would be more historical to add Pommerania to Brandenburgs core provinces at the death of the last Duke, which I believe was in the late 1620s. Brandenburg claims on Pommerania (as opposed to Swedish claims for territorial compensation) was one of the issues that made it so hard to end the Thirty Years War, and the elector certianly made a big stink about his inheritance of Pommerania.
For gameplay it may be much more easily handled your way, but a Pommeranian inheritance event might be nice too.

I also think the penalties for not becoming HEI are much too harsh. Certainly in the middle ages the Popes much prefered a weak and divided Empire, and I firmly believe that Papal relations ought to be the opposite (much better of you keep a decentralized empire, drastically reduced if you claim to be the lay master of all Christendom and set yourself up with an alternte claim to universal authority. Similarly -3 stability for the status quo seems rough, maybe -1 if you stay the same, and -2 if you become the Empire (After all this is a centralizing event likely to be resisited by the nobility and the clerical lords). Anyway, becoming the Empire should be reasonably painful, you're taking a lot of people's rights and privileges away to consolidate them in the emperor, and they should resisit fiercely. Now that I think about it I'd throw in a civil war or revolt risk too. You get a huge benefit, you should have to earn it. How about adding Northern Italy as core too. The Emperor's had claims all the way down to the Papal States.
Finally I think the AI should default to not becoming the Empire.

This adds a lot of flavor, which is a very good thing. But my question is technical - how much difference did rifling make to military activity? Rifles were used for hunting, but until the late 19th century soldiers were not equipped with them, and other than some prototypes, as far as I know no rifling was using in artillery. So I'd expect the effects of choosing to ban rifling to be more social than military - it makes poachers lives a little more difficult, forces artistocratic hunting parties to stick to more traditional hunting methods and so on. However, it certainly reflects on social policies, and openess to Renaissance ideas of science. My guess might be

The reason it wasn't used is because of the church ban. If rifling was accepted into military use in early 1600s, the warfare would change dramatically. Accuracy of firearms was awful, and that allowed for a lot of hand-to-hand combat. Imagine what the front attack in columns would look like if the accuracy is 90% as opposed to 30-40%?
One of the reason muskets lasted for so long isn't research, but problems with ammunition and surplus - after all there was no industrial production for bullets, different caliber meant death to the army, as there was no way to produce enough supplies quickly.

But surely a more important problme was the firing rate. Rifles weren't of any use prior to 1550, and the key impediment to their adoption was the fact that you had to reload them with a hammer, and it took several minutes or more. So the range and accuracy were great from the beginning, but getting off one good shot isn't going to win a battle. Widespread adoption only came obout with the Minie bullet which could be dropped down the rifle without any force at all. American frontiersmen (who would have had rifles for hunting) came up with using narrower ammunition with a wad of cloth over it, which allowed them to be effective in the war of Independence, and I think the British used a similar solution in the Napoleonic wars. But it still wasn't really viable, and Britich riflemen were almost always backed up by musket armed infantry. I don't think the potential for the technological advances was there in the 16th century.

I would actually have the event changing New England Reformed occur before the English Civil War. They were fleeing the Stuarts, & I am not sure whether, if the Puritans had not migrated to New England by 1642, they would have at all (at least until after 1660). They won the Civil War, after all.

Speaking of the Civil War, does anyone have an event that brings the Civil War to a conclusion if if occurs through a revolting minor and not an event? The diploannex event that ends the programmed Civil War doesn't happen if the Civil War event itself doesn't happen. I've seen England partitioned for the duration, even with the Putirans ruling everything but Anglia.

This should also apply to the French Protestants and Catholics.

Burgundian Kings

Here are some events I have created for Burgundy. One event allows Burgundy to become France, just as any of France's better behaved vassals* can, and also gives them the remaining French CB shields.

Another six are for the two times that Philip the Good asked the Emperor for the crown of Lothringen. At each of the two parleys the Burgundian has the option of asking for the crown (ai will 85% of time) which gives the Habsburgs (should be the Emperor but this can't be done yet) the option of granting them the crown (ai will 15% of the time). If the Burgundians get the crown they get a strip of CB shields running from Oldenburg down to Provence to cover the non-Italian portion of Lothair's kingdom (should they also get shields on NW Italy?). The events are mutually exclusive so the Burgundians can only gain one crown.

The last four events are for the revolts against Philip's efforts to centralize his domain. They give Burgundy the option to push up its centralization at the cost of some revolts. I would like it if a succesful revolt could cause Flandres to become independent, so in the FLA entry in revolt.txt I have removed no = BUR and and moved the startdate back to 1419.

*The Burgundians were vassals in historic terms if not in game terms.

Very nice events. I'm actually trying a Lorraine AAR where I try to recreate Lothairingia, and I was unsure which exact boundaries it would have. Your province list helped alot. Pfalz is in the boundaries?

About NW Italy, it might be some work, but maybe Burgundy could offer to request the crown but not the rights to the Kingdom of Italy in the hopes of getting a less severe diplomatic reaction. Theoretically, this would also improve their chances of getting the crown (by renouncing practical claims to NW Italy), but this is impossible with the current system. Otherwise, the crown is the crown, and should at least add permanent CB or core province shields to the Italian provinces. No need to cede them to Burgundy. Does the name change to Lorraine?

Also, would France get an event where they either accept the rebirth of Lothairingia and lose their CB shields to those provinces, or refuse to accept it and go to war?

My map of the three Frankish kingdoms is of really low quality and in any case the borders shifted over time. The map has Lotharingia's western border running roughly along the line from the mouth of the Rhine to the mouth of the Rhone. The eastern border ran south from the mouth of the Weser to roughly the middle of Switzerland then East, reaching the Med East of the Istrian Peninsula.

In producing a border that Burgundian Lothringen might have negotiated with Austria, I erred on the generous side in the West and North and on the Stingy side in the South-East.

If I had been trying to accurately reproduce the original border I would have excluded Lyonnais and the Burgundian provinces of Bourgogne, Flandern and Artois, but include Corsics and all the Italian provinces North of Napoli. Possibly I would exclude Kleves and Muenster, or include Schwyz and Tirol.

I didn't think of putting in a name change to Lorraine, but will think about it. Note that only Austria cedes provinces to Burgundy, and none of those provinces are particularly likely to be Austrian by 1463. Good idea about the French event by the way, although I am not going to code any more events until I have played some more 1.03

My maps are of similarly low quality. :)

I show such cities as Lyons, Dijon, and Nevers within the boundaries of very early Burgundy (immediately after the split into Lorraine and Burgundy), which would imply not only the province of Lyonnais, but also Bourgogne and Nivernais. I couldn't tell about Artois, but Brabant and Flanders look like definite ins.

The northeastern border seems to be around Hamburg (what EU province is that in?), and then dives down towards the Rhine. There's a bulge westward around the city of Main, which is why I was unsure about Pfalz. Even Alsace looks a little bit iffy. Is that lake Geneva that then forms the northern border as it turns further east?

I include Tyrol; Istria looks like it should be chopped in half (that's a familiar debate from other threads :)). As for the rest of Italy, was the Patrimony of St. Peter considered part of the Kingdom of Italy? Was the Patrimony coterminous with the Papal States? And did Lotharingia have the same rights over Papal territories as either the Kingdom of Italy or the HRE?

Sorry, I guess this isn't strictly related to your events ...

Your map has cities on it?! Thats more than mine does.

I believe that it wasn't until after the disappearence of Lotharingia that the Pope stopped recognizing the temporal authority of the Frankish kings and Emperors, indeed the depths to which the Papacy had fallen around 900AD can be judged by the title given to it by the original Cambridge Medieval History, viz. the Pornocracy.

If you go to this site, it gives brief histories (from a dynastic standpoint) of all of Europe, and has some surprisingly decent maps. A bit quirky, though.

Yeah, I figure there's not much to do but go to the local university library and hope they have the New Cambridge Medieval History, v.2-3. :)

Name: The Marcher Lords
Trigger: 1460-1543; not at war
Description: Since the time of the Normans, our country has been divided. Welsh princes have ruled in the north and east; the Marches in the south and west were granted to English families who have spent their time fighting each other, bringing in English and Flemish settlers, and oppressing the native Welsh. But now the Marcher Lords have been weakened by generations of fighting in France and England. We should take this opportunity to reform our administration and heal some of the divisions.

Name: The Red Dragon
Trigger: 7 August 1485; England has made the choices for a Henry VII victory at Bosworth field

Description: Henry Tudor, the grandson of the adventurer Owain ap Maredudd ap Tudur ap Goronwy, has landed in Wales and seeks Welsh support in his bid for the throne of England. He has been spreading stories among our people, reminding them of the old prophecies about a hero, an Arthur or an Owain Glyndwr come again, who will deliver them from oppression. Now he has come here with an army and unfurled the red dragon battle-flag of Cadwaladr, the last king of all Britannia. If we ignore his presumption and support him he has a good chance of success; King Richard's hold on the throne is weak. But I fear that our nobles will follow him to England, hoping for places in his court as their reward. Our independent Wales could soon become a memory.

A: Support Henry Tudor.

Name: The Boar of Cornwall
Trigger: 1486-1580; possession of Cornwall

Description: My lord, we live in an age of wonders. We have regained the West Country, from where Arthur, the Boar of Cornwall, trampled the necks of the saxon invaders so long ago. The men of the west have not forgotten their history. They have kept their old language and their parliament. Shall we purge Cornwall of its English taint and reunite these two branches of the British nation?

A: Stop bothering me with these ridiculous stories.

B: By the beard of Macsen Wledig, let us forge a Greater Wales!

Name: The Breaking of the Dinefwrs
Trigger: November 1531; aristocracy >= 2
Description: We have sad news to report concerning Rhys ap Gruffydd of Dinefwr, the grandson of the late Rhys ap Thomas, may God rest his soul. My lord, you will recall that we did not give him his grandfather's office of chamberlain of south Wales; the family had already grown far too powerful. Now we believe that he plans to seek more power by other means, and has been looking for support from abroad. With the chaotic state of the world at the moment, we cannot tolerate even the possibility of treachery. We must make this clear to our nobles.

A: Arrest and execute him.

Name: The Voyage of Prince Madoc
Trigger: 1582

Description: Other princes are making fortunes and building empires in the new world across the ocean. My lord, our scholars have discovered records showing that some of this wealth rightfully belongs to us. They relate to the legend of Madoc ap Owain Gwynedd, a distant ancestor, who is said to have founded a colony in the 12th century near what the Spaniards call Florida. We could exploit this to justify a claim to the new world older than those of France, England or Spain.

A: I don't believe a word. Anyway, our ambitions are on this island.

Name: The Bread of Heaven
Trigger: 1750
Description: Our people have grown tired of the empty formality of the established church. Evangelical preachers are converting them in their thousands to a new religion, methodism, that emphasizes simplicity of worship and a personal relationship with God. Our culture is being re-shaped; the valleys of Wales echo with the new hymns.

A: Feed me till I want no more.
Religion of Wales and Cornwall to reformed.

Are these events too positive or too cheesy? Is there any sense in Wales gaining a CB shield on Cornwall, after a seperation of 900 years (although of course the Cornish don't have to be happy about this)?

It would be nice to have one more "Arthurian" event and a negative event. There were major Eisteddfods in 1523 and 1567; perhaps this could lead to religious trouble when combined with the reformation and use of the celtic past in propaganda. A choice between Catholic, Protestant and "the old ways" (orthodox?)

I still don't have the game, so need help in testing these (once they're written). And how do I choose event and leader IDs? I posted a list of Welsh monarchs in another thread; are there any free IDs for those? Johnny Canuck, thank you for your offer to script the monarchs a while ago.

For the "red dragon of Cadwaladr" event, Henry Tudor historically used his Welshness and Welsh legends and history to legitimize his claim to the English throne and to unify the country. The Welsh AI will support him and hopefully be absorbed back into England; a human prince of Wales has the option of taking Henry's place and having a go at conquering England himself. I don't quite follow how the War of the Roses events work at the moment, or how this one should fit into them.

Pishtaco - I like your suggestions for Wales. I'd be glad to script the Welsh monarchs you suggested earlier, plus the Welsh leaders you just posted. For the events, I agree that the "Red Dragon of Cadwaladr" depends in large part in how the War of the Roses events by Gnome work out. Also, I really like the "Prince Madoc" event; it adds flavour to the Welsh experience, & provides an opportunity for Wales to become a colonial power. However, I would emphasize in the text of the event that the voyage is believed to have been mythical, but could be exploited to justify overseas Welsh expansion. The English made use of Prince Madoc's "voyage" to establish a prior claim to North America. I also like the idea of having some event for Wales in the mid-1500s simulating religious disturbances. Likely, the major internal issue for Wales in the 1500s would have been how it would have reacted to the Reformation, situated between Protestant England & Catholic Eire, to say nothing of the great Protestant vs. Catholic wars. Wales would likely have been to weak to chart an independent course, & would have instead essentially chose one side to help protect it against the other.
