Potuguese independence is 1640 or 1650's depending on whether you count the loss of Spanish control over Portugal or the peace treaty. So no Tordesillas.

I don't actually know what the cede province command does to owned provinces that are not controlled. There are a few possible solutions. I can make the intellectual argument that the French were the one's who had encouraged the Portugese revolt, so they would be happy to turn over their unowned conquests to their new best friend. OK, not ideal. The event could trigger only if Spain was at peace. No historical basis as the reason Portugal was able to revolt was that the Spanish were fully committed to wars in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Catalonia. An event could give likely counties who are colony poaching (HOL, ENG, FRA) the option to make peace with Spain BEFORE the Portuguese revolt - or at least alert them that they have a month or Portugual will take back all it's colonies. No help for the AI unfortunately - and historically the Dutch in Pernebuc (sp) were a big issue.

It was. These events are based on those discussions. I started with 40+ events and eventually axed it down to this. I'll try to post the events for review soon.

I am really sorry. But I am super worked out. I am going to have to surrender on this thread. I am flooded in work for school (I am about to graduate). Maybe in a month or two, I can handle this big project. I just dont have the time. If Havard wishes to take over the ideas and concepts in this thread and use them, I would like to pass the torch to him. Otherwise, you guys can continue discussion on Spain and work out some Spanish events yourselves. I am truly sorry, but I am too ambitious for my own good. I bit off more than I could chew. I am sorry.

This event doesn't quite work. There are two problems:
  • Breakvassal doesn't always work. I seem to recall reading somewhere it only works when called by the vassal, not the liege.
  • If Aragon owns Naples, then the only effect of the event is to grant them independence (in the single province of Napoli only), and increase stability (if choice A is taken). The root cause here is that, as far as I can tell, the decisions whether to exclude given commands from an action_X list are made simultaneously, without taking previous commands in the list into account. Thus, all the commands in which NAP appears other than independence are ignored, since it doesn't exist yet.
These can be fixed by adding two additional events, and triggering them from the first, like:
Code:
7203A:  command = { type = independence which = NAP }
        command = { type = stability value = 3 }
        command = { type = relation which = NAP value = 400 } # If Naples already independent
        command = { type = trigger which = 997204 }
        command = { type = trigger which = 997205 }

7203B:  command = { type = independence which = NAP }
        command = { type = vassal which = NAP } # If Naples already independent
        command = { type = relation which = NAP value = 400 } # If Naples already independent
        command = { type = trigger which = 997204 }

997204: command = { type = secedeprovince which = NAP value = 394 } #If ARG have Apulia#
        command = { type = alliance which = NAP }

997205: command = { type = breakvassal which = ARG }
997204 is an Aragon event; 997205 is Naples.

My beef with Spain is the different treatment that Aragon and Portugal get. I don't see why one is always annexed to Spain, while the other (if the historic choice is made) becomes a vassal. Realistically they were treated equally within the Spanish crown, each had it's own rights and raised its own revenue for the crown. As making Aragon a vassal causes problems for Spanish involvement in Italy, I'd propose that Portugal being annexed by Spain ought to be the historic event, and the Iberian revolts in 1640 made more severe. Plus a liberation of Portugal event would be needed so they can reclaim all their colonies. Ugly to code, but a cleaner result to me.

I thought that the two did receive quite different treatment historically...

After Philip was declared king of Portugal, he decreed that his new realm would be governed by a six-member Portuguese council; that the Portuguese cortes would meet only in Portugal; that all civil, military, and ecclesiastical appointments would remain Portuguese; and that the language, judicial system, coinage, and military would remain autonomous. Philip supported the two institutions in Portugal that he believed might unite the two countries: the Jesuits and the Inquisition.

I don't see the problem with having Portugal vassalized instead of annexed. In fact, for a human player, the forced vassalization rather than the game-ending forced annexation seems the better route. I also think Portugal should be force-allied with Spain via the same event to hopefully cause overseas trouble and war/loss of colonies as happened historically.

Good call.

I remember I had some problems with Naples... It's two-three months since I wrote those events, and I forgot. I'll make some changes for these events.

What do you think about the rest? The main idea was to cause some major instability to Castile and Aragon to avoid the easy fare the first 100 years as they get now :) There were quite some rough days back then...

My only concern is that things may have become too rough for the AI. In my current GC, the only one I've only played with these events in so far, Aragon lost Messina, Sicily, and Sardinia to independence, Malta defected to the Knights, and Rousillon and Gerona through war to Portugal; Granada is still independent in 1540, and the Ottomans hold Gibraltar and Murcia. Oof.

Aragon's troubles, at least, are probably due to 7301 being for Aragon instead of Navarre, as I think was intended (since it's otherwise a duplicate of 7205). The troubles in south Spain will probably need more testing, especially since the AI Ottomans have been doing uncommonly well in this run. (They took Constantinople in 1425, the Balkans up to Croatia, Banat, and Wallachia by 1460, annexed the Mamluks in 1502, and diploannexed the Hedjaz and Algiers shortly after the scripted vassalizations.)

One reason why it is a bit on the rough side now is that the way revoltrisk is handled has been slightly changed. I think maybe the revoltrisks should be reduced a bit.

I never noticed that Aragon got both civil wars :eek: -8 stab and a revoltrisk of 12 IS a bit on the rough side... ;)

I did several runs on these when I wrote them, but since some things are changed since then (handling of revoltrisk, defections) they need some tweaking.

If Aragon is getting +100 with PAP because of the end of the schism it seems to me they ought to start with bad relations because of the schism. -50 maybe?

My understanding (and I'm no expert) is that the difference were more formal than real. As far as I remember the Aragonese councils were always staffed by locals until Phillip IV, although there was no formal commitment that this would be the case. The language and judiciary were definitely seperate from Castille. I believe the coinage and military were kept seperate - wasn't there an aragonese squadron in the Armada? After 1640 things changed dramatically - but after 1640 Portugal was independent. The human can always choose vassalage over inheritance, and a human Aragon has the same problem.

Anyway I think the discussion isn't helpful as I've worked out a fatal flaw in my proposed solution. Transferring all the colonies back to Portugal is trivial, but it will give portugal a horrendous BB and make it's independence short lived. I still find the current solution unsatisfactory and unfair to Aragon, but I see no solution that isn't worse. (Thanks Txini for pointing out the issue with Naples.)

My apologies, the arrangement with Aragon does sound remarkably like that of Portugal duing the "Spanish Captivity". I think Castilians began to be appointed in the cortes of Portugal after the time of Philip II.

Just asking,

Not sure how Aragon is set up, but by the sound of things, I wonder how people would feel about keeping Aragon with a vassal status for longer rather than outright annexation? Would that be desireable or appropriate? When do the event files have Aragon annexed by Spain?

The annexation is set for 1516 IIRC.

The problem with this solution is that it doesn't allow for Spanish involvement in Italy, because the Spanish territories there are Aragonese. If there is to be any chance of the historical outcome to the Italian Wars (Spain takes effecitive control of Italy) these territories must be Spanish. As it is the wars of Ferdinand I won't really come off as the inheritance hasn't taken place yet.

I can rationalize the difference in the treatment of Aragon in that there is a difference of degree in the way Portugal was handled, and I believe that Olivares pushed the Aragonese harder than the Portuguese. It's ugly, but I think it's the best of several bas options.
