Revamping the West

Having spent some thought on this, I would like to propose a changed setup for the three provinces in the northwest of Germany (Oldenburg, Münster and Kleve):
- the country Oldenburg should be removed from the game. Although the dynasty gained fame as Kings of Denmark, the actual County of Oldenburg was tiny and didn't do much throughout its history
- Münster is moved to the Oldenburg province. Although most of it was in the Münster province and that province is probably better for Münster, it covered also a huge part (about 40 percent; its share was definitely bigger than that of Oldenburg itself or of Ostfriesland) of the Oldenburg province. Concerning neighbour provinces, Oldenburg is even more accurate; the bishopric of Münster had a common border with Bremen and Friesland (like the Oldenburg province) while it had none with Zeeland and Hessen (like the Münster province)
- Kleve is moved to the Münster province, which gives it the badly needed connection with Geldre
- the new country of Berg (using the OLD tag) is created in the Kleve province, which is of course the purpose and greatest benefit of this whole thing. Jülich-Berg was a major player in the low Rhine region, involved in almost all conflicts in the area and its territory was bigger than that of Cologne and Kleve-Mark. Berg would get inherited by Kleve in 1511, making the United Duchies one of the strongest German countries, which is historical IMO, considering that they even dared to oppose the Hapsburgs on their own and fared quite well in the War of Geldrian Succession until Charles V used his North African army. After the extinction of Kleve in 1609, we would be able to represent the split of its territories between Brandenburg and Palatinate-Neuburg and the ensuing conflict; later Berg would pass to the Palatinate (1685) and Bavaria (1777); which I like since I was never satisfied with the complete absence of the Wittelsbachs in the Low Rhine area. Then in 1806 it could become independent again as Joachim Murad's Grand Duchy of Berg. Generally, I believe, Berg would be a more interesting country to play and add more to gameplay and game balance than Oldenburg.
I do realise that moving countries around and changing the function of a province entirely should generally be avoided, and having Münster in Oldenburg and Kleve in Münster might be confusing, however I think there is a good case for doing this. What do you think?

I do like it however,
-Münster did in fact invade Zealand several times. No direct border, but it's awfully close, and the exact borders weren't particularly important.
-The loss of Oldenburg makes it harder to represent Hanover's growth. In the later scenarios (god forbid we should ever try to make them work) Hanover owns Oldenburg.

Still on balance I agree that Berg adds a lot to the game, and it would be a useful addition.

Hannover's second shield should and will be on Bremen instead of Oldenburg:
Code:
[COLOR=red]
#The electorate of Hannover
event = {
      id = 48040
      trigger = { NOT = { exists = BRE } }
      random = no
      country = HAN
      name = "The Electorate of Hannover"
      desc = "During his reign in the Calenberg part of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, Ernst August conducted an ambitious and determined policy, intending to rise to the ranks of the most powerful imperial princes. Since 1662 he was Prince Bishop of osnabrück and eventually he managed to inherit all possessions of the Lüneburg branch of Braunschweig, which secured a solid territorial base for his country that was further expanded by his successor's acquisition of the old archbishopric of Bremen. He maintained a strong standing army, conducted centralistic reforms and managed to introduce primogeniture, finally securing the country's unity. By successfully supporting him against the Ottomans and promising to always vote for the Habsburg candidate in imperial elections, he convinced Emperor Leopold to grant the electoral dignity to the house of Brunswick-Lüneburg that became thereafter known as the Electorate of Hannover."
      style = 3

The Seeland argument was not supposed to be the primary reasoning, I was only trying to argue that moving it
to Oldenburg might even have advantages for Münster (and the big border it has with Hessen is really strange).
So do you like the idea?

Yes, that's the obvious downside. Since EU2 1.06, Province.csv can be included in the moddir, so that we would be able to rename the provinces and move the cities around, however we cannot change the actual map and the province names written on it. Therefore it would be kinda confusing for people new to the concept, but I believe you can get used to it and the gameplay benefit of Berg more than compensates for that kinda messy look (that is geographically no less accurate than the current setup).

Don't rename the provinces please. Xinjiang/Xinkiang is alredy too confusing. Province names MUST be the same as on the map or endless confusion will ensue.

Very well, then forget about it. :(
It's not only about making things more correct, but about making things work out better. If you prefer to slavishly stick to Paradox's map just for the sake of it, very well...

I don't object to the country of Cleves being in Munster province and the country of Berg in the Kleves province. I do object to the province names Cleves on the map being called Berg in the game. That is much too confusing.

By the way we should flip Xinjiang back too. It's incredibly annoying.

I do see your point, my apologies for my very enraged and unnecessary comment. However what do you mean with "removing the names"? Do you mean using province names that cannot be confused? Changing country names wouldn't seem too sensible, how should they be called if not Münster, Kleve and Berg?

So what about this:
the provinces keep their old names, only the cities of Münster (to Kleve) and Oldenburg (to Münster) are changed and their position is moved. That way all people will see the provinces as what they are called on the map, which is probably the only way to avoid a real mess. However, in the setup and the events, Kleve will for all purposes represent Jülich-Berg, Münster is Kleve-Mark-Ravensberg and Oldenburg Münster. The people who do care about this will understand it by looking at the country and city setup, while those who only look at Germany when they conquer it will still find the "right" (matching the map) province names in province information, statistics and peace negotiations.
To further clarify this, the setup could be explained and justified in the FAQ.

The country of Cleves could be called Mark. No such possibility for Münster though. Not sure it's a great idea.

What is no great idea? Calling Kleve Mark? I agree about that. Let's just keep the names and hope everybody can discriminate between EU2 provinces (that everybody knows are incredibly screwed up) and their "role" (what they represent). I don't think this will be too confusing as soon as you get accustomed to it and everything is done consistently (nevertheless I will of course give in on this if majority is against).

Additional events

Reorganising the ids for 253 new events is definitely no fun (took me about two weeks), but I'm finally done
now. If we're using the event ranges Mnorre suggested, some random events need new ids because they're currently
occupying the 200000 range. Maybe we should reserve a separate range for the random events?
On another note, who is doing the text.csv, or will we return to putting the text into the actual event files? Even then,
some event text have to go into text.csv because they are too long otherwise (e.g. I had to put about 20 of my event
descriptions into text.csv).
During testing I realised that two things had to be done to make the event set complete (i.e. in this case working logically):

1. Meißen needed an event to revert to the Saxony tag if it captures Anhalt in the 16th century (like it did
historically). I have connected it to the Schmalkaldic League

2. Since I've removed Brandenburg's initial shield on Magdeburg, it was imperative to make an event for the

Impressive work Twoflower!
Have you renumbered all the German events, or just the new ones?
I think that the normal range for random events would be best, and a special file for only national random events, since they sometimes are multiple and will clutter down the national files. Do you have random events 'triggered' on provinces, then we might need a special range. I'll PM the others to get their opinion on the national random file and range.
Crook has said that all events can be sent to him with texts inside, he will then put them into text.csv. I think this works fine, as long as comments and event titles in the event files makes them readable.

I've only renumbered my 253 new ones (yes, it's that much, I was shocked myself; there are of courses several event chains and alternative events among them), as you demanded (or didn't you say the old ones should stay the same?). The problem about the random events is that I had a database mismatch using the 200000 range for Kleve events because there are EEP random events using the 200000 range. Hence I'd suggest to give some different range to the general random events (e.g. to make my events work I have changed the old EEP random events to the 500000 range).
