Editing save games

Is it just me or are save games always compressed, Have yet to find a checkbox like in ck2 which makes the save uncompressed. Is there something I do not know, cause I would like to be able to make some changes in the savegame.

PC:

1. Right-click, select "Open with Notepad++"
2. Edit the save then save it before closing it.
3. Load it directly in the game

This is what the wiki says, and it is not true, yes I am on pc.

What worked for me was:
1) Cut out the plain text header in notepad++ and save
2) Unzip the new file and edit
3) Compress again and add back the header
