So I have recently installed Europa Universalis 1 on my laptop, which has Windows 8. It works, which is always good because I had heard of issues with back-compatibility when I was considering getting a new computer around Christmas-time. The one thing that is troublesome is when I want to go and edit a save file or the like - I add or alter whatever it is I am trying to do, and then when I try to save the new version, it tells me 'access denied'.

Is there any wisdom on this which enlightened forumites can share?

Okay, I've managed to figure out how to save the files, via opening Notepad as an administrator, but the first thing I did was to try and edit the keyboard shortcut keys, to make it easier to pause and stuff via the keyboard rather than needing to go and click the on-screen buttons. However, when I open the game to test the new shortcut keys I set up, they don't work. Any suggestions?

If you've installed the game under the system path (c:\program files\) you will keep getting issues like this. Install it elsewhere, like c:\games\eu\ .

I finished playing the Spain game I was doing at that time, and then got around to uninstalling and reinstalling the game, but when I try to do so, it says 'an installation support file could not be installed. access denied'. Google suggested safe mode or poking around in the temporary files, neither of which seemed to directly help.

Did the de-installation of the game work without problems?
If not then parts of the installed game might still be on your harddrive or entrys in the registry that might mess with your try to install the same game again at another place.
Here are some tips how EU1 can be run on Windows 7 - however I have no idea if those are applicable for your Windows 8 laptop.

And for further questions about installation better ask in the FAQ and support subforum instead of the modding subforum:

Great, I've finally managed to reinstall the game, by the possibly overkill means of doing a 'refresh' on my computer, which removed basically all the files that weren't preinstalled in the computer by the manufacturer, and then trying to install Europa Universalis. Now let's see if it lets me reinstall all my other stuff nicely as well.
